When The Weather Turns Crisp, These 6 Wisconsin Orchards Offer Cider Treats

Once the first chilly morning shows up in Wisconsin, a lot of us start thinking about warm apple cider donuts, jugs of fresh cider, and a bag of apples picked right off the tree. The good news is that you do not have to go far to find them, because orchards across the state turn into fall headquarters from Burlington all the way up to the shores of Lake Superior.

This list covers six real, working orchards that each bring something a little different, from rare heirloom apples and goat pens to corn mazes, hay rides, and country stores full of baked goods. Save it for your next crisp weekend, and maybe send it to the friend who always wants to plan a fall day trip.

1. Brightonwoods Orchard, Burlington, WI

More than 150 kinds of heirloom apples, pears, and quince grow here. That number alone puts Brightonwoods in a different category from the average pick-a-bag stop.

If you have only ever tasted the same five apples from the grocery store, this is the place to find out how many flavors are actually out there. The staff are known for sharing the history behind the varieties, which turns a simple apple run into a mini lesson in fruit.

The setting is rustic in the best way. Walking trails wind through the property, so you can stretch your legs before heading back to the stand.

Now for the treats. Apple cider donuts are a weekend highlight, and fresh cider is available to sip on site or take home by the jug.

Hot chocolate is also on hand for the colder days.

Kids tend to head straight for the little tree house, which gives parents a few minutes to browse apples, pumpkins, and cheese.

Plan around the schedule, since the orchard is closed Monday and Tuesday. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1072 288th Ave in Burlington.

2. Door Creek Orchard, Cottage Grove, WI

Since 1984, one family has been quietly growing around 90 varieties of apples just east of Madison. Some are modern favorites, while others are heirlooms you rarely see outside an orchard.

What sets Door Creek apart is how it grows. The fruit is sustainably raised with the absolute minimum of chemicals, whether organic or synthetic.

That careful approach shows up in the trees, which look healthy and well cared for. The staff are knowledgeable too, and happy to help you figure out which apple fits a pie, a snack, or a cider mug.

Apples are only part of the story. Grapes and pears are available as well, along with fresh apple cider for anyone who wants a taste of fall in a glass.

Pawpaw trees have even joined the lineup, which is a fun surprise for a Wisconsin orchard.

The u-pick area runs during the season and can close later in the fall. Even then, the store stays busy and makes the trip easy to justify.

Door Creek Orchard sits at 3252 Vilas Rd in Cottage Grove. Hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Monday and Tuesday off.

3. Apple Barn Orchard & Winery, Elkhorn, WI

Free parking and free admission. In a season when fall outings can add up fast, that is a nice way to start the day in Elkhorn.

Apple Barn Orchard describes its apple cider donuts as famous, and they are a big reason people pull into the lot on Sugar Creek Road. Cookies, honey, and jugs of cider round out the snack table.

September and October bring u-pick apples and pumpkins. Families can fill a bag, then hop on a relaxing hay ride through the orchard.

Live music adds to the weekend mood during the fall season. Between the tractor rides and the picking, it is easy to spend a full afternoon here without planning much.

Here is a bonus for early planners. The farm also opens for fresh strawberry picking in June, so it can become a summer stop and a fall stop in the same year.

You will find it at W6384 Sugar Creek Rd in Elkhorn. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Mondays.

4. Fergusons Orchards, Eau Claire, WI

A spinning apple ride, pedal carts, and a haunted house billed as only slightly scary. Fergusons is the orchard for families who want their cider donut with a side of action.

Western Wisconsin has plenty of apple stops, but few pack in this much. There is a corn maze, farm animals, and wagon rides that loop around the orchard, including a wagon train ride that kids tend to love.

Picking is part of the fun too. Apples and pumpkins are both available to pick yourself during the fall season.

Once you have worked up an appetite, the quaint country store takes over. It is stocked with local products and baked goods, and the apple cider donuts have earned a loyal following among serious orchard-goers.

The business is 100 percent family owned and operated. That local ownership is part of what gives the place its hometown character.

Fergusons Orchards is at 6470 Balsam Rd in Eau Claire. It keeps generous fall hours, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends, which makes an after-school visit realistic.

5. Erickson Orchard & Country Str, Bayfield, WI

Bayfield sits way up on the Lake Superior shore, and the road trip is half the reason to go. Erickson Orchard gives you a sweet reward once you get there.

The country store sells bakery items, gifts, and whatever fruit is in season. Apple desserts are a specialty, and the apple cider donuts and fruit wraps are two treats people keep coming back for.

You can also pick your own apples straight from the trees. Plenty of varieties grow here, and end-of-season prices can be a pleasant surprise.

October weekends are when things really pick up. Handmade gifts, live music, brats, and cheese curds join the baked apple treats, which turns a quick stop into a small fall festival.

Timing matters with this one. Erickson is open from Memorial Day through the end of apple harvest in October, so a late fall trip could mean finding the doors closed for the year.

The address is 86600 Betzold Rd in Bayfield. Hours run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, so an early start is smart.

6. Lapacek’s Orchard, Poynette, WI

Plenty of people show up for caramel apples and leave with far more than they planned. Lapacek’s has that effect.

This small family-run orchard in Poynette focuses on pre-picked apples, so there is no ladder work involved. Just grab a bag of quality fruit and move on to the fun part.

The treat list is long. Apple cider, apple cider donuts, caramel apples, honey, and both dehydrated and freeze-dried apples all make the shopping bag heavier.

Then there is the gift side of the shop. Quilts, jewelry, candles, stoneware mugs, plants, succulents, and fall decorations make it easy to knock out a few early holiday gifts.

Fresh vegetables and pumpkins are usually on hand too. And yes, there are goats to pet and a few friendly cats wandering around.

The orchard is open for the 2026 apple season at N1959 Kroncke Rd in Poynette. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Monday through Wednesday closed.

From heirloom rarities in Burlington to goat pens in Poynette, Wisconsin orchards make it easy to celebrate crisp weather one cider donut at a time. Pick a direction, check the hours, and bring a big bag.
