Some of the best tacos in Kentucky are served at counters in strip malls, grocery stores, and small storefronts you might drive past without a second look. These spots skip the fancy decor and put their effort into handmade tortillas, well-seasoned meats, and fair prices.
From Louisville to Paducah, this list covers eight taquerias that earn their spot one taco at a time.
1. Tacolandia, Louisville, KY

Robots and tacos are not a pairing most people expect on Preston Highway. Tacolandia is described as a robot-run eatery, which gives it a quirky edge over every other stop on this list.
The food itself stays grounded in classic Mexican fare. The tacos al pastor and tacos de asada are the standouts, and the menu also stretches to the Maximo Maximo Burrito, the stacked Taco Torre, and carne asada fries.
Families get a break here too. There is a kids’ menu with a children’s quesadilla, plus a large mango drink that pairs well with a spicy order.
Hours run Tuesday through Sunday, with later closing times on Friday and Saturday at 11 PM. The restaurant is closed Mondays.
Parking is free, and there is usually plenty of it. Curbside pickup and delivery are available for nights when staying in sounds better.
2. Taco Stop Taqueria, Lexington, KY

Tortillas made by hand are the calling card at this small Lexington spot on Anniston Drive. The restaurant says so right up front with its motto, “Tortillas echas a mano.”
That attention shows on the plate. The tacos come loaded with a generous amount of meat, and the tortillas hold everything together the way a good taco should.
The dining room is casual and kept clean, with quick service that makes it easy for a lunch break or a solo dinner. Takeout is available, though delivery is not offered.
I like this one for weekday visits. Weekend afternoons tend to be the busiest, while Wednesday is one of the calmer days.
Note the schedule quirk: Taco Stop is closed on Tuesdays instead of the usual Monday. It opens at 10 AM the rest of the week, and reservations are not taken.
3. Taquería Los Vázquez Llc, Bowling Green, KY

Breakfast tacos at 8 AM is a strong argument for any taqueria. Los Vázquez on Morgantown Road opens early Tuesday through Saturday, which makes it one of the few spots here that covers morning, lunch, and dinner.
The Street Tacos Set of 3 is the go-to order, and the asada tacos are especially well regarded. Beyond tacos, the menu leans into variety with pupusas, sopes, picaditas, empanadas, and tamales that are mostly cooked to order.
Soup fans should plan around the calendar. Caldo de res is served Thursday through Sunday.
A drive-thru makes it easy to grab food on the go. There is also outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, plus high chairs and a kids’ menu inside.
Sunday hours are shorter, from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the restaurant is closed Mondays.
4. Taqueria Cruz, Covington, KY

Value is the headline at Taqueria Cruz. Around twelve dollars can buy four tacos here, and that order is filling enough to handle a real appetite.
The secret is no secret at all. Handmade tortillas and well-seasoned meat are what turned this Covington spot into a neighborhood fixture.
The space is small and intimate, so it suits a quick lunch better than a big group outing. A lunch special adds even more reason to stop by midday.
Service is friendly and fast, and burritos are on the menu for anyone not in a taco mood. Free parking is usually easy to find nearby.
Plan around the hours. It opens at 10 AM every day, closes at 8:30 PM Monday through Saturday, and wraps up at 4:30 PM on Sundays.
5. El Mercadito LLC, Owensboro, KY

Groceries in one aisle, tacos at the counter, and cowboy hats on the shelf. El Mercadito on Bosley Road is part Mexican grocery store and part taqueria, and it has been serving Owensboro since 2017.
The tacos are what make it a lunch destination. Plenty of folks who come in for a quick taco order end up counting them among the best in town.
After eating, there is plenty to browse. The store stocks fresh produce, meats, spices, tortillas, baked goods, candies, cheese, chicharrones, piñatas, and Mexican ice cream.
Its reach goes well beyond the city. The market serves several surrounding Kentucky counties along with nearby Indiana communities like Evansville and Rockport.
Hours are generous at 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday, and 9 AM to 8 PM on Sunday. Friday evening is the busiest stretch.
6. La Poblanita Taqueria, Shelbyville, KY

Making tacos at home rarely beats the prices at La Poblanita. This Shelbyville taqueria keeps costs so reasonable that cooking your own starts to look like extra work for no savings.
Al pastor is the signature here, and carnitas are another favorite. Portions of meat run large, and the sauces and salsa get as much attention as the fillings.
The setup is casual and family-friendly, with high chairs available and quick, efficient counter service. It works well for groups and travelers passing through on Midland Trail.
One of the best details is the schedule. La Poblanita is open every day of the week from 11 AM to 9:30 PM, so there is no closed day to work around.
Friday afternoons and evenings draw the biggest crowds. Reservations are not accepted, but parking is free and plentiful.
7. Taquería Los Gonzalez, Paducah, KY

Los Angeles street food has a home in western Kentucky. Taquería Los Gonzalez on Cairo Road is a small, family-run spot that serves LA-style Mexican street food made from scratch.
The Baja-style fish tacos are the order that sets it apart from the rest of this list. Fresh ingredients and homemade cooking are central to how the family runs the kitchen.
Vegetarians have plenty of choices here too, thanks to a full vegetarian menu. That is not something every taqueria can claim.
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming to everyone, with seating, coffee, and dessert on offer. Catering, curbside pickup, and delivery round out the options.
Hours run 10 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday. Sunday is shorter, closing at 4 PM, so plan any weekend fish taco cravings accordingly.
8. Tacos Paisa, Richmond, KY

A salsa bar and a hot sauce bar make it easy to customize every bite at Tacos Paisa. This Richmond storefront on South 2nd Street lets diners build the heat level they want.
The tacos keep it classic with seasoned meat, diced onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. Pork tacos and lengua are popular picks, and the menu also includes mulitas, burritos, a pork carnitas plate, and a birria quesadilla.
The vibe is relaxed and a little trendy, with attentive service and screens for catching a game. A full vegetarian menu and a kids’ menu make it simple to bring a mixed group.
Unlike most spots here, Tacos Paisa accepts reservations. That helps on busy Friday and Saturday evenings, when it stays open until 11 PM.
It is open seven days a week starting at 11 AM, which makes it an easy pick for a late lunch near campus or a weekend dinner.
