Washington Burger Lovers Keep Driving Out To These 7 Old-Fashioned Drive-Ins For Thick Shakes

Some meals are worth planning a whole road trip around, and a good drive-in burger with a shake so thick the straw stands up is one of them. Washington still has a handful of old-school stands where you order at a window, grab a picnic table, and eat fries straight out of the bag.

These spots are not chasing trends. They keep doing the same simple things well, and that is exactly why people keep coming back.

From mountain highways to city corners, here are seven classic drive-ins that deserve a spot on your next weekend drive.

1. The Net Drive In, Mount Vernon, WA

Strawberry season in Skagit County has a way of showing up in the milkshake cup here. The Net Drive In is known for shakes made with fresh local berries, which fits nicely with all the farmland along WA-536.

The stand has a true 1950s drive-in look and a historic, easygoing feel. Orders happen at the counter, and picnic tables out back give you a spot to settle in with your food.

The menu covers old-fashioned burgers, a patty melt, a Mushroom Swiss Melt, a Fishwich, fried mushrooms, corn dogs, and crinkle-cut fries. Real malts sit alongside the shakes, and ice cream servings run generous.

Plan around the hours. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 7 PM and closed Sunday.

Expect a wait during busy afternoons, though the free lot usually has room.

2. Zeke’s Drive In, Gold Bar, WA

More than 30 milkshake flavors can make choosing harder than the drive over Stevens Pass. Zeke’s sits right on US-2 in Gold Bar, and it has long been a favorite pause for travelers heading into or out of the Cascades.

Burgers are the main event. The menu includes an elk burger and a Deluxe Cheeseburger, and portions lean big.

I like this stop because the setting adds to the meal. Picnic tables look out toward the mountains, and dogs are welcome outside.

Service moves quickly, which helps on busy weekend afternoons. Zeke’s is open Monday and Thursday through Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so check the day before you leave.

3. PICK-QUICK Drive In, Fife, WA

A fresh banana shake is one of those menu items that tells you a place takes its fountain seriously. PICK-QUICK in Fife serves one, along with chocolate malts and other thick shakes.

The building and sign keep a classic 1950s drive-in style. Some folks have been stopping here for generations.

Burgers use locally sourced beef, and fries are cut fresh. Other picks include a chili burger, grilled cheese, Chili Fritos, and a banana split.

Picnic tables and a small lawn make it easy to eat on site, and curbside pickup is available too. Hours run 10 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday and 11 AM to 8 PM on Sunday.

Bring cash, since it has been known as a cash-only stop.

4. Laredo Drive In, Naches, WA

Peanut butter chocolate is the shake flavor to know about at Laredo. Out on US-12 near Naches, this old-timey drive-in pulls in road trippers heading toward White Pass and Yakima regulars alike.

Burgers here run big and taste homemade. The Super Ranger is one of the hearty options, and sides include fries, tots, and onion rings.

You can use the drive-through or eat at the outdoor picnic tables. Note that there is no restroom on site, which is useful to know on a long drive.

Laredo is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Sunday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

5. Miner’s Drive-In Restaurant, Yakima, WA

Since 1948, Miner’s has been feeding Yakima, and it has become a genuine local institution. Some families drive a couple of hours just to eat here.

Portions are the headline. The Big Miner with cheese is famously huge, and finishing a full meal is a real challenge.

Beyond burgers, the menu includes a Double Dog, chili dog, chicken strip basket, and salads. Everything is made to order, and shakes round out the classic lineup.

Late hours set it apart from the rest of this list. Miner’s opens at 8 AM daily and stays open until 2 AM most nights and 3 AM on Friday and Saturday.

It gets busy, but there is a drive-thru and outdoor seating.

6. Frisko Freeze, Tacoma, WA

Ask a longtime Tacoma resident about late-night burgers and Frisko Freeze usually comes up fast. The landmark on Division Avenue has kept its retro look for decades.

Ordering works by drive-thru or walk-up window. Food is made to order, and the line tends to move quickly.

The classic combo is a burger, fries, and a shake. Onion rings, fish and chips, corn dogs, a Gardenburger, and a Frisko Slushee Float are on the menu too.

Hours run 10 AM to midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 1 AM on Friday and Saturday. There is no restroom or indoor dining, so plan on eating in the car or taking it to go.

7. Eastside Big Tom, Olympia, WA

Giant dinosaurs are not usual burger stand decor, but Eastside Big Tom makes them work. The Olympia joint has a dinosaur garden, a Mystery Machine, and cutouts of Tom in different outfits.

Burgers come as the Big Tom and Little Tom. Add Goop, the house burger sauce, and a side of crinkle-cut fries.

Thick milkshakes come in plenty of flavors, and both fries and shakes come in small and large sizes. Chicken strips, fish and chips, dogs, and onion rings are also available.

Use the drive-thru or grab a seat, with free Wi-Fi and restrooms on site. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Seven stands, seven kinds of charm, and plenty of thick shakes along the way. Pick a highway and start sipping.
