Homemade Soup And Fresh Sandwiches Make These 6 Arizona Lunch Counters Worth The Detour

Some of the best lunches in Arizona come from places where you order at a counter and grab your own seat. These spots skip the fancy service and put the effort where it counts, into soups made from scratch and sandwiches built fresh.

From a mining town in the mountains to a strip along Route 66, each one on this list earns a stop for its own reasons. Save it for your next road trip, or send it to the friend who always asks where to eat.

1. High Desert Market and Cafe, Bisbee, AZ

Bisbee is a former copper mining town stacked into the Mule Mountains, and Tombstone Canyon is one of its main roads. High Desert Market and Cafe sits right on it at 203 Tombstone Canyon, part cafe and part market.

Soups, personal pizzas, sandwiches, and quiche are prepared from scratch here. Chicken tortilla soup is a regular highlight, and bread comes alongside.

The sandwich lineup includes pesto with mozzarella and tomato, turkey bacon brie, and pastrami, each served with a side salad.

Vegetarians get plenty of room to roam, with a full vegetarian and vegan menu plus gluten-free accommodations. There is also a smoothie bar and house-baked goods like carrot cake.

Ordering happens at the counter, and you can eat inside, take your food outdoors, or carry it out. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor side.

Plan around the schedule. The cafe is open 9 AM to 5 PM Thursday through Monday and closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and it does not take reservations.

2. Jitters Lunchbox, Flagstaff, AZ

Lunch boxes are not just for kids at this Route 66 stop. Jitters Lunchbox packs fresh, handmade sandwiches and homemade soups for grown-up appetites at 3504 Historic Route 66 in Flagstaff.

The menu covers both hot and cold sandwiches. The Santa Fe carnitas sandwich, egg salad, Texas southwest dip, and an Italian grilled cheese are among the options.

Soup gets equal attention. Homemade clam chowder shows up here, and enchilada soup has appeared too, along with daily specials, quiche, cookies, and other desserts.

I like this one for road trippers heading through northern Arizona’s pine country, since there is free parking and takeout is easy. Hours run 8 AM to 3 PM weekdays and 9 AM to 3 PM Saturday, with Sundays off.

3. Scout’s Gourmet Grub, Prescott, AZ

A drive-through window at a scratch-made sandwich shop is a rare find. Scout’s Gourmet Grub on Iron Springs Road in Prescott offers one, along with counter service inside.

The shop carries an outdoors theme, which suits a mountain town known for its historic courthouse plaza and pine-covered surroundings. The space is small, but the selection is not.

Stacked subs are made fresh to order, and homemade sides fill out the plate. Soups rotate alongside them, and several vegetarian options mean meat-free diners are covered.

Families get a kids’ menu and high chairs. Tea and coffee are also on hand.

Timing helps here. Afternoons on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday tend to be the busiest, while Wednesday mornings are usually calmer.

Hours are 9 AM to 4 PM weekdays and 9 AM to 3 PM Saturday.

4. Beyond Bread, Tucson, AZ

The name gives away the priority. Beyond Bread on North Campbell Avenue in Tucson is a bakery first, and that bread forms the base of a seriously long sandwich menu.

Dozens of sandwich choices fill the board, with big stacks built on fresh ingredients. Milton’s Melt is one of the better-known picks, and vegan focaccia is available too.

Two soups are offered daily, with tomato basil among the favorites. Salads, pasta salad, and quiche round out the lineup.

The dining room is spacious with lots of seating, which helps during the bustling lunch rush. You can also shop for loaves and baked goods to take home.

Of all six stops, this one has the most generous hours. Doors are open 7 AM to 7 PM every day, and evenings tend to be quieter.

5. Z-Cafe, Mesa, AZ

Sandwiches named the Godfather, the Bloom, and the Allush tell you Z-Cafe has some personality. The Mesa deli on West Baseline Road leans into hot and cold sandwiches with names worth remembering.

Soups here are made from scratch and served alongside those sandwiches and fresh salads. Chipotle chicken salad, chef salad, spinach salad, and bow tie pasta are all on the menu.

Breakfast is a strong card as well. Egg sandwiches like the Irwin and the Spicy, plus a chipotle burrito, make it an early-morning option with coffee and tea.

Full vegan and vegetarian menus widen the appeal, and kids have their own menu. The cafe is open 7 AM to 4 PM weekdays and 7 AM to 2:30 PM Saturday.

6. Lunch Time, Phoenix, AZ

Weekday workers in west Phoenix have a reliable answer to the noon question. Lunch Time, a family-owned spot on North 35th Avenue, is open 7 AM to 3 PM Monday through Friday only.

Bread is made in house, and the sandwiches are assembled with care. Picks include a BLT sub with avocado, bacon turkey and cheese on marbled bread, and a well-loved egg salad sandwich.

Homemade soups change things up, from chicken noodle to albondigas. Half sandwiches pair well with a full bowl.

Save room for banana bread or an oatmeal raisin cookie. The service is friendly and quick, which makes it an easy fit for a short lunch break, and there is outdoor seating plus takeout.

If you need lunch in Phoenix this week, this counter is a solid way to close out the list.
