Got A Sweet Tooth? These 6 Arizona Bakeries Make Pan Dulce Fresh

A warm concha and a cup of coffee can turn a plain morning into a good one. Arizona sits right next to Mexico, so it has some of the best panaderias in the country, and many of them bake their sweet bread fresh every day.

This list covers six bakeries from Nogales to Mesa that keep their cases stocked with conchas, empanadas, cookies, and more. Grab a tray, pick up your tongs, and get ready to plan a sweet little road trip.

1. La Estrella Bakery Inc., Tucson, AZ

Early birds get a real head start in Tucson’s south side, since this bakery opens at 6 AM every day of the week. That timing matters when you want pan dulce before work or before the Sunday crowd shows up.

The cases hold a cheerful spread of Mexican baked goods. Conchas are the headliner, with empanadas, cookies, and glazed donuts filling in around them.

Fresh tortillas are on the shelves too. On top of that, the bakery serves both white and red menudo, which makes it a handy stop for a full breakfast run instead of just dessert.

Prices stay friendly, usually landing between $1 and $10 per person. That leaves plenty of room to grab a mixed box for the office or the family table.

Plan ahead on weekends. Sunday mornings and Saturdays get busy, and Sunday hours wrap up at 1 PM, so a lazy afternoon visit will not work that day.

The shop is at 5266 S 12th Ave, with parking on site. There is no restroom, so treat it as a quick in-and-out stop with coffee to go.

2. Panaderia y Pastelería La Mejor, Casa Grande, AZ

Some people drive in from Maricopa just for the bread here, and one look at the morning trays explains why. Pan dulce is made fresh every morning at this Florence Boulevard bakery.

The name means “the best,” which is a bold promise for a bakery. La Mejor backs it up with conchas, traditional Mexican cookies, soft bolillos, and fresh tortillas.

It is also a pasteleria, so the sweets go past the bread case. Flan, cheesecake, pies, and custom birthday cakes are all part of the lineup.

Thirsty? Champurrado and horchata pair nicely with a bag of sweet bread.

Coffee is available as well.

This is a takeout spot with no dine-in seating, and delivery is an option if you cannot get away. Hours run 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, and the shop is closed Sundays.

I would save this one for birthday season. Ordering a cake and picking up pan dulce in the same trip is a smart way to cover the whole party.

3. Panaderia La Cathedral, Nogales, AZ

Right on the border, Nogales has a front-row seat to Sonoran baking traditions. Panaderia La Cathedral leans into that with coyotas, the thin, filled pastries Sonora is known for.

The selection runs both sweet and savory. Alongside the pan dulce, you will find tamales and a bread baked with cream cheese and jalapenos inside.

The sweet bread here is known for being very soft. Many Tucson residents could make the hour drive south and find it holds its own against their hometown favorites.

Cookies and rolls round out the cases. The shop is clean, and the staff help newcomers sort through the many choices.

Hours are generous, from 6 AM to 8:30 PM Monday through Saturday and 6 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. Friday morning tends to be the quietest time to stop by.

Find it at 409 E Baffert Dr. It is a smart stop on any road trip to or from the border.

4. Carmen’s Bakery, Phoenix, AZ

Conchas served warm are the big draw at this family-run shop on McDowell Road. The shell-topped buns come out soft and full of flavor.

Carmen’s also bakes birote, a crusty roll from Jalisco that is harder to find in Phoenix than the usual bolillo. Bolillos are here too, along with empanadas, cookies, and flan.

The prices are easy on the wallet, usually $1 to $10 per person. The service is friendly and personal, which fits a family business.

Hours run 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday, and the shop is closed on Sundays. Weekday mornings are often calm if you dislike lines.

A free parking lot makes the stop simple. If you need sandwich rolls and a dessert in one quick errand, this is a good choice.

5. Panaderia La Central, Avondale, AZ

Ever had a concha filled with ice cream? The Concha Nieve at this Avondale bakery does just that, and it is a fun twist on a classic.

La Central is more than a bread counter. It serves breakfast, including menudo, an American breakfast plate, and concha toast.

The menu also covers Arizona’s hot afternoons. Look for raspados in strawberry, tamarindo, and lime, along with elote en vaso, churros locos, boba smoothies, and iced lattes.

Of course, the pan dulce still matters most. Conchas, empanadas, and bolillos are baked fresh and pair well with the coffee.

Unlike many panaderias, this one has dine-in seating and a restroom, so you can stay a while. Delivery is available too.

Sunday mornings get busy, so try a weekday morning instead. Hours run 6 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday and 6 AM to 5 PM on Sunday.

6. Panadería y Carnicería La Estrella, Mesa, AZ

Bread up front, butcher counter in the back. This Mesa shop on Broadway Road lets you buy dessert and dinner in one stop.

The bakery side keeps fresh sweet bread, pastries, and tortillas stocked. Tres leches cake and champurrado are also on the menu.

Head to the back for the carniceria, which sells quality cuts of meat and Mexican favorites like carnitas by the pound. Grilled meat and fish, Mexican candy, and bottled Mexican drinks fill out the store.

The space is small but colorful, with a redesigned tile floor. Service moves fast, and the shop has stayed consistent for years.

Hours are hard to beat, from 5 AM to 9 PM every day. There is even a drive-through for busy mornings.

Weekends are the busiest, so an early weekday visit is easiest. Free parking is available nearby at 819 E Broadway Rd.
