Seven Ohio Barbecue Joints Smoking Ribs So Tender The Bone Slides Right Out

Some ribs make you work for every bite. The ones on this list do the opposite, letting the bone pull free with barely a tug.

Ohio has a bigger barbecue scene than many people realize, stretching from Cleveland’s west side to the Ohio River in Cincinnati and down to the old canal town of Chillicothe. I picked seven spots where tender, smoky ribs are the main reason to show up, but each one brings something different to the table.

You will find a Victorian house in Columbus, a riverfront landmark, a brick-walled bistro in a historic downtown, and a small-town smokehouse in northwest Ohio. Some are counter-service stops that close early, while others are sit-down places with full dessert menus.

Save this list for your next road trip, and maybe send it to the friend who always orders the full rack.

1. Smoked On High BBQ, Columbus, OH

A Victorian house with a front yard is not where most people expect to find a smoker crew. Smoked On High started as a food truck before settling into this spot at 755 S High St, just south of downtown Columbus.

The ribs here are thick, with a nice char and a smoke flavor that does most of the talking. They are tender enough to pull apart with a plastic fork, which says plenty about the time they spend in the smoker.

Three different sauces come along for the ride, so you can try a little of each or skip them entirely. Brisket, pulled pork, collard greens with pork, and the vegetarian Max N Cheese round out a menu that stays focused on the basics.

Plan around the schedule. The doors open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 8 PM and stay closed Monday and Tuesday.

Ordering is at the counter, and there are no reservations. Street parking is free but can be tight, so give yourself a few extra minutes, and know that dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating.

2. Woodstock BBQ, Lakewood, OH

Dry rub fans, this Lakewood favorite on Madison Avenue was made with you in mind. The ribs come out tender and well seasoned, with the smoke and spice working together instead of hiding under sauce.

The menu rotates, but regular stars include Pork Belly Burnt Ends, Dry Rub Wings, a Brisket Sandwich, and the unexpected BBQ Spaghetti. Brisket here arrives with a clear smoke ring, and the pulled pork holds its own too.

Save room, because the banana pudding and peach cobbler are award-winning desserts with a loyal following. Stuffed Smoked Jalapenos make a fun starter if your group likes a little heat.

Weekday hours run 4 to 10 PM, with noon openings on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday afternoon and evening bring the biggest crowds, and reservations are not accepted.

A patio, a lively casual setup, and TVs for game days make it an easy pick for groups. Street parking along Madison can take some patience.

3. Montgomery Inn The Boathouse, Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati has a long-running love affair with Montgomery Inn ribs, and the Boathouse gives that tradition a river view. The restaurant sits at 925 Riverside Dr, looking out over the Ohio River.

The signature move is the sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, served warm alongside ribs that fall right off the bone. House-made chips come on the side, and the Saratoga Nachos and Pulled Pork Nachos show off just how generous the portions run.

Not everyone at the table has to order ribs. The menu stretches to filet mignon, salmon, pork chops, shrimp cocktail, and Greek salad, plus desserts like homemade key lime pie and the Chocolate Volcano.

I would save this one for a birthday or a visit from out-of-town family. It takes reservations, and dinner reservations are a smart idea since there is usually a wait, especially on Saturday evenings.

It is closed Mondays. Parking options include a lot and valet, and there is a kids’ menu for younger diners.

4. Bullwinkle’s Top Hat Bistro, Miamisburg, OH

Exposed brick, a historic building, and a spot right on N Main St give this Miamisburg stop plenty of small-town character. Bullwinkle’s Top Hat Bistro brings barbecue into downtown in a laid-back, come-as-you-are way.

Ribs here come off the bone the moment you lift them, and the sauce balances sweet and savory. Order the Ribs Basket for a quick meal or go for a full rack if you came hungry.

The sides deserve attention too. Hash Puppies, Onion Straws, Downtown Mac and Cheese, and black bean soup all show up on the menu, along with pot roast, a Pulled Pork Platter, and carrot cake for dessert.

Hours are generous compared with many barbecue spots, running until 10 PM most weeknights and 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations are accepted, which helps on busy Friday evenings.

Families will find a kids’ menu and high chairs, and parking is usually easy to find nearby.

5. Jimmy’s Backyard BBQ, Cuyahoga Falls, OH

Sauce collectors will feel right at home on Graham Road. Jimmy’s Backyard BBQ offers a variety of homemade sauces, including a White BBQ that stands apart from the usual red options.

The ribs are lean, juicy, and consistently fall-off-the-bone tender. Pair them with pulled pork, brisket, or shredded brisket, and grab a corn muffin on the side.

Service is counter-style, quick, and casual. It is the kind of place I would hit for a weekday lunch or an early family dinner.

Timing matters here. It opens Tuesday through Saturday at 11 AM, closing at 7 PM midweek and 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and stays closed Sunday and Monday.

Parking is free and usually easy. Curbside pickup is available if you would rather take the ribs home.

6. Outlaw Smokehouse, Napoleon, OH

Northwest Ohio road trippers heading along the Maumee River should know about this Napoleon smokehouse on W Front St. Outlaw Smokehouse keeps the focus on smoked meat and big portions.

Its ribs are dry-rubbed, very meaty, and tender enough to slip free of the bone. Burnt ends and moist brisket make strong companions, and the smoked baked beans are a side worth ordering.

The menu also gets creative with that brisket. Look for the Brisket Mac Burrito, Brisket Bowl, Brisket Nacho, and a Beef ‘N Cheddar.

Hours are limited to Wednesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 7 PM. Friday and Saturday afternoons get busy, so an early lunch is an easy win.

Reservations are accepted, parking is plentiful, and a kids’ menu keeps it simple for families.

7. Old Canal Smoke House, Chillicothe, OH

Chillicothe served as Ohio’s first capital, and this smokehouse fits right into a town that takes its history seriously. Old Canal Smoke House sits in a restored brick building at 94 E Water St.

Hickory smoke drives the menu, and the ribs are the headliner, tender enough that the bone pulls away cleanly. Brisket, pulled pork, half chicken, and even prime rib share the spotlight.

Sides go beyond the basics with jalapeno slaw, corn casserole, and coconut onion rings that people remember long after the meal. Starters like Nest of Armadillo Eggs and potato skins, plus Brisket Chili and a Prime Rib Mushroom Melt, keep the menu interesting.

Finish with a slice of peanut butter pie. It is open most days but closed Wednesdays, and reservations are accepted for busy weekend evenings.
