Seven Texas Tamale Shops Worth Ordering From By The Dozen Before The Holidays

In a lot of Texas homes, the holidays do not really start until a warm bag of tamales lands on the kitchen counter. Some families spend a whole day spreading masa and filling husks together.

Plenty of others, especially in the busy weeks of December, call a favorite shop and order a few dozen instead. This list covers seven tamale spots across the state, from San Antonio and Houston to the Rio Grande Valley, El Paso County, North Texas, and the Coastal Bend.

Each one earns its place for a different reason, whether it is a tiny counter with petite pork tamales, a cafe with habanero flavors and a salsa lineup, or a drive-through that makes picking up a big order easy. Hours, ordering styles, and specialties are included so you can plan ahead.

Save this one before the holiday rush, because the best tamale lines tend to get long fast.

1. Ruben’s Homemade Tamales, San Antonio, TX

Small tamales, big following. Ruben’s on the East Side of San Antonio keeps things focused on homemade pork and chicken tamales, and that tight menu is a big part of the appeal.

The tamales here run on the petite side, with a spicy kick and a strong meat-to-masa ratio. They have the hand-rolled look of a family recipe, the kind that makes a holiday table feel complete.

A dozen has been going for about $16, which keeps a family-sized order reasonable. The staff are helpful about explaining the menu and pointing out extras that go well with the heat.

Keep in mind this is a counter-only, takeout shop. There is no dine-in seating and no restroom, so plan on grabbing your order and heading home.

Hours run 7 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. Weekend mornings are the busiest stretch, so I would aim for a weekday stop if you want a quick in-and-out.

The free lot usually has plenty of room.

2. Alamo Tamales, Houston, TX

A drive-through window for tamales might be the most Texas convenience of all. Alamo Tamales on Berry Road in north Houston offers exactly that, along with a roomy cafeteria-style dining room for anyone who wants to sit down.

Pork and pork mole tamales are the headliners, made by hand and packed with spice. The shop also turns out fresh tortillas, a big lineup of tacos and plates, and pan dulce that could easily become part of your holiday order too.

For many Houston families, this is the traditional holiday tamale run. Sunday mornings get the heaviest traffic, while evenings tend to be quieter.

Doors open at 6 AM every day and close at 6 PM, which means early birds can grab breakfast and a dozen before work. Catering is available for larger gatherings, and the shop does not take reservations.

Parking is easy, with a free lot plus street spaces nearby.

3. Tommy Tamale, Grapevine, TX

Habanero pork is the flavor that tends to steal the show in Grapevine. Tommy Tamale works as both a cafe and a market, so you can eat lunch on the spot or stock the freezer for December.

The menu goes well past one or two fillings. Beef tamales come generously stuffed, and there is a full vegetarian and vegan menu, which helps when your holiday guest list has mixed diets.

Salsa fans get plenty to work with, since the shop carries a diverse lineup and is generous with samples. Burritos, quesadillas, street tacos, queso, and a tamale pie round out the menu.

The detail that fits this list best is the “Tamales by the Dozen Hot N’ Ready” option, alongside frozen items like pinto bean and cheese. Curbside pickup and delivery make big orders simple.

Hours are 10 AM to 7 PM Monday through Thursday, 10 AM to 8 PM Friday and Saturday, and 11 AM to 6 PM Sunday.

4. Delia’s Specializing in Tamales, San Juan, TX

Variety is the whole point at Delia’s. In the Rio Grande Valley, the name is a familiar local chain, and the San Juan location on Nolana Loop shows why.

The flavor list reads like a holiday sampler. Chicken and cheese in green sauce, spicy chicken and cheese, pork, spicy pork in green sauce, chicken Veracruzano, and bean and cheese all make appearances.

Sweet tamales are part of the lineup too. Mixing a half dozen of those into a savory order is an easy way to cover dessert.

The shop serves its tamales freshly steamed with salsa, and there is a salad bar and coffee for anyone eating in. A drive-through and frozen tamales make it simple to stock up for later.

Hours run 7 AM to 8:30 PM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM to 6:30 PM on Sunday. Sunday mornings and afternoons are the busy window, so weekdays are the calmer pick.

5. Tamales Lupita, Canutillo, TX

Out on Doniphan Drive, just northwest of El Paso, a weekend line is part of the routine. Tamales Lupita in Canutillo usually has a wait, which says plenty about its standing in the area.

Chile con queso tamales are the ones to know here. Green chicken and red versions are on the menu too, and the tamales come large and well filled.

A dozen has run about $20, a solid value for the size.

Beyond tamales, the shop also sells chicharrones and other traditional snacks, so a holiday pickup can turn into a small spread. There is some seating, including outdoor space, though most people treat it as takeout.

Weekend hours start at 6 AM, with weekday doors opening at 7 AM and closing at 8 PM daily. Note that there is no restroom and no delivery, and Saturday and Sunday mornings bring the biggest crowds.

6. Dallas Tamales Cafe, Grand Prairie, TX

Despite the name, this one sits in Grand Prairie, on Small Street. Dallas Tamales Cafe has a down-home, hole-in-the-wall character and a menu built around Tex-Mex comfort food.

Beef and pork tamales lead the way. Ordering them by the dozen is a common move, with a dozen running around $18.

What sets this stop apart is everything else on the menu. Menudo, pozole, barbacoa, migas, and breakfast tacos make it a strong breakfast destination, and a lunch special pairs a tamale with a taco and a tostada.

I would save this one for a Saturday morning, when you can sit down to a bowl of menudo and then carry a dozen home. Unlike most spots here, the cafe accepts reservations, and there is a kids’ menu for families.

Hours are 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Thursday, 7 AM to 5 PM Friday and Saturday, and 7 AM to 4 PM Sunday.

7. Granny’s Hot Tamales LLC, Corpus Christi, TX

More than 20 years of making tamales is a strong résumé. Granny’s Hot Tamales on Airline Road in Corpus Christi has built that track record by specializing in one thing.

Spicy beef tamales are the signature, and they are the order to start with. The shop keeps a variety of fresh hot tamales, with good prices that make multiple dozens easy to justify.

Call-ahead orders work well here. Bulk orders of two dozen or more can be ready and fresh when you arrive, which is a big help during the holiday scramble.

Delivery is available too, handy for Coastal Bend families juggling party prep.

Plan around the shorter schedule. Granny’s is open 9:30 AM to 4 PM on weekdays and 9:30 AM to 3 PM on Saturday, and it is closed on Sunday.

The phone number is 361-241-8262.

Wherever you live in Texas, one of these seven shops should be within reach. Order early, order extra, and let someone else handle the masa this year.
