Seven Virginia Seafood Shacks Where The Fried Oyster Baskets Come Out Piled High This Fall

Fall is when Virginia oysters hit their stride, and the best way to enjoy them might be fried, golden, and stacked in a paper-lined basket. From the Eastern Shore to the Northern Neck, small seafood shacks keep turning out generous plates without any fuss.

This list covers seven of them, each with its own reason to make the trip. Grab a map, bring an appetite, and plan a cool-weather drive that ends with hush puppies on the side.

1. Ray’s Shanty, New Church, VA

Since 1986, a wood-paneled roadside spot on Chincoteague Road has been feeding travelers headed for the island. Ray’s Shanty keeps things old-fashioned, and that is exactly the appeal.

The fried oysters come out in generous portions, and they taste fresh rather than frozen. Fried scallops, crab cakes, steamed shrimp, and a peel and eat shrimp platter round out the seafood side, while prime rib covers anyone at the table who wants something from land.

A seafood market sits on site, so you can take some of the catch home too. Interesting decorations line the room, and the mood stays relaxed even when the place is packed.

Plan ahead on the timing. Ray’s is open Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8 PM and weekends from 11 AM to 8 PM, and it is closed Monday through Wednesday.

Expect a wait on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Reservations are accepted, and I would grab one if you are rolling in with a hungry group.

2. The Seafood Shack, Mathews, VA

A dozen oysters on one po boy. That kind of generosity is why The Seafood Shack in Mathews earns a spot here.

Out on the Middle Peninsula, this local restaurant and market serves steamed shrimp, crab cakes, crab legs, fried shrimp, and she-crab soup. The fried oysters and crab cakes are two of the most popular orders, and the specials, like fresh grouper, are worth asking about.

Prices stay reasonable, and the setting is laid-back. Live music adds to the fun on the right day, and there is outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.

Families get a kids’ menu, high chairs, and a changing table. Parking is free and usually easy.

Hours run Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM. Thursday afternoons tend to be the quietest window if you want a calmer lunch.

3. The Shanty, Cape Charles, VA

Honey butter with fried oysters sounds unusual until you try it. The Shanty in Cape Charles serves its golden fried oysters that way, alongside homemade tartar and cocktail sauces.

The cottage-style eatery sits on the water in this small bayside town, with a patio that makes a cool fall afternoon easy to stretch out. Live music shows up regularly too.

The menu goes well beyond one dish. Local oysters on the half shell, chowder, steamer buckets, a lobster roll, fish and chips, shrimp tacos, calamari, and even fried avocado tacos all have a place here.

Of all seven stops, this one has the most flexible schedule. It is open every day from 11:30 AM to 9 PM.

Saturday afternoons get the busiest, so a weekday lunch is the smart move. Reservations are accepted, and dogs are allowed outside.

4. Bubba’s Shrimp Shack Tappahannock, Tappahannock, VA

Looking for a budget-friendly basket? Bubba’s in Tappahannock keeps most meals in the $10 to $20 range, which is rare for a plate this full.

Shrimp and oyster baskets are the headliners, fried and served with plenty of fries and hush puppies. Coleslaw and fried okra make solid sides, and the flounder basket, catfish, and she-crab soup give you more to choose from.

The river town setting on the Rappahannock makes it a handy road trip stop. Service is counter or table, and takeout, delivery, and outdoor seating are all available.

Bubba’s is open seven days a week, with later hours until 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday afternoons fill up, while weekday mornings stay quiet.

5. Captain Zack’s Seafood, Chincoteague, VA

Chincoteague has a long oyster heritage, and Captain Zack’s leans right into it. The counter-serve stand on Deep Hole Road is known for crab cakes and seafood platters that look like small mountains.

The fried oysters wear an airy, light batter that lets the oyster flavor come through. If you want just oysters, the single fried oyster basket is the order.

Hungrier crowds go for the big platters. One version piles on fried shrimp, scallops, oysters, clam strips, hush puppies, a crab cake, and a large slab of flounder.

Soft shell crab sandwiches, fish tacos, calamari, and blackened scallops also appear on the menu. Outdoor seating works well on a mild fall day.

Hours are 11 AM to 9 PM, Thursday through Monday. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan your island weekend around that.

6. Fish Hawk Oyster Bar, Irvington, VA

Marina views come standard at Fish Hawk Oyster Bar, part of The Tides Inn in Irvington. Boats on Carter’s Creek make a fine backdrop for lunch.

Fried baskets are the move here, with oysters, shrimp, and calamari all on offer. Fresh oysters and crab sandwiches fill out the lineup.

Prices stay in the $10 to $20 range, which feels like a nice surprise for a resort setting. Valet parking is available along with a free lot.

Hours are short, so timing matters. Fish Hawk runs from noon to 5 PM, Thursday through Monday, which makes it a lunch and early afternoon stop.

I would save this one for a sunny fall day when sitting outside by the water is the whole point.

7. KC’s Crabs & Cues, Kilmarnock, VA

Oysters straight from the owner’s own bed in the Great Wicomico River give KC’s Crabs and Cues a local edge that is hard to beat.

The Kilmarnock spot pairs fried seafood with pool tables, so dinner can easily turn into a game. Fried oysters, scallops, and crab cakes come with fresh-cut fries and hush puppies that earn real loyalty.

Wings, steamed shrimp, nightly specials, and crabs in season widen the menu. Live music and sports on the screens keep things lively.

KC’s does not take reservations. Doors open Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 9 PM, Saturday from noon to 9 PM, and Sunday from noon to 8 PM.
