Ohio has plenty of famous foods, but a good roast beef sandwich rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. That changes here.
This list covers eight spots across the state, from a Cleveland deli known for towering stacks of meat to a Toledo diner serving open-face plates with mashed potatoes. You will also find a small-town drive-thru keeping a classic fast food name alive, a Norwood shop built around double-decker sandwiches, and a Cincinnati deli baking its own focaccia.
Some of these places open at 6 AM. Others close by mid-afternoon, so timing matters.
A few are in big cities, and a few sit along quiet state routes where you might not expect a great lunch. Each one earns its place for a different reason, whether it is portion size, a cheddar-topped classic, or a creative house combo.
Save this list for your next road trip or lunch break.
1. Slyman’s Restaurant and Deli, Cleveland, OH

Portion size is the headline at this St. Clair Avenue deli. Slyman’s built its reputation on corned beef stacked so high the sandwich barely holds together, and the roast beef gets the same generous treatment.
The setting is a retro breakfast and lunch spot with a casual, counter-focused feel. The meat is sliced thin and piled thick, then served on fresh bread, with homemade rye as a classic choice.
Corned beef still rules the menu, with options like the Corned Beef Melt and corned beef on rye with Swiss. Still, anyone chasing a well-portioned roast beef sandwich in Cleveland ends up here sooner or later.
Sides keep things simple. Pickles, home fries, and onion rings round out the plate.
Plan your visit carefully. Slyman’s is open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 2:30 PM and closed on weekends, and Friday tends to get busy from morning into the afternoon.
Free lot and street parking make the stop easier, and takeout is available if you want to carry that stack back to the office.
2. Ranchers Roast Beef, Washington Court House, OH

Roast beef and cheddar is the order to know at Ranchers. The family-owned shop on South Elm Street keeps the bread fresh, the cheese generous, and the beef moist.
The name says it all. Roast beef is the main event, backed by curly fries, loaded fries, onion chips, and subs.
Value is part of the appeal too, with a $6 meal deal on the menu. Most visits land in the $10 to $20 range per person.
Hours here are unusually long for a sandwich shop. Ranchers opens at 6 AM and stays open until 10 PM Monday through Saturday, so breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all on the table, along with coffee.
A drive-through makes it an easy road trip stop off the highways around Fayette County. Families will find a kids’ menu and high chairs, and parking is usually plentiful.
3. Rax, New Carlisle, OH

Remember Rax? Plenty of Ohioans grew up with this roast beef chain, and the New Carlisle location on South Dayton-Lakeview Road is one of the few places still serving that nostalgic menu.
The beef is sliced paper thin and piled high, then paired with a sweet house sauce. The Beef N Cheddar and the Regular Rax are the familiar picks.
Baked potatoes with tangy cheese sauce bring back another old favorite. Curly fries, a pork tenderloin, a chicken sandwich, and a Turkey Bacon Club fill out the rest.
For anyone who misses the old days of Rax, this is a fun detour from Dayton or Springfield. The tender beef is the reason people return after that first nostalgic visit.
Hours run 10 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 11 AM to 9 PM on Sunday. Evenings are busiest, while weekday mornings are quieter.
4. Schmucker’s Restaurant, Toledo, OH

Yellow brick walls and a pie case with more than 20 selections set the scene at this Reynolds Road diner. Schmucker’s has a historic, homey feel, and the roast beef here comes the old-school way.
The open-face roast beef sandwich is the star. It arrives as a platter with mashed potatoes, and pea soup is a natural partner on cooler days.
Then there is the pie. Chocolate peanut butter, cherry, and banana cream are among the choices, so saving room is a smart plan.
Breakfast is a big draw too. Homemade biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and chicken and biscuits share the menu with the Wimpy Burger Platter.
Schmucker’s opens at 6 AM and closes at 4 PM Monday through Saturday. Late-week mornings fill up fast, and reservations are not accepted, so an early arrival helps.
5. Niko’s Sandwich Board, Akron, OH

Dipping is half the fun at Niko’s. The hot roast beef comes with lean, tender meat and a flavorful au jus, and the Paris France Dip gives the classic French dip its own spot on the menu.
This quaint deli on West Market Street slices meat fresh and builds sandwiches to order. The decor is playful, and the portions are generous for the price.
Deli fans have plenty to explore. Hot pastrami, a Reuben, corned beef on rye with a good pickle, and the Blue Jack City Sandwich all sit on the board.
Homemade soups like matzo ball and sides like pea salad add some variety. Full vegetarian and vegan menus mean mixed groups are covered too.
Hours are worth noting. Niko’s is open 11 AM to 7 PM Tuesday through Friday, closes at 3 PM on Monday and Saturday, and is closed Sunday.
6. J & W Sandwich Shoppe, Norwood, OH

Two layers beat one. J and W Sandwich Shoppe in Norwood is known for double-decker sandwiches, and the Roast Beef X 2 is exactly what it sounds like.
The roast beef and turkey double decker is another popular build. Turkey versions with pepper jack, mayo, mustard, tomato, and lettuce show how far you can customize.
Everything is made to order with quality meat. Prices are the real surprise, with most meals landing between $1 and $10 per person.
The menu also covers a club sandwich, a steak hoagie, ham and turkey, and a soup and half sandwich combo. Italian pasta salad makes a good side.
Keep in mind that there is no restroom, so this is best as a grab-and-go lunch. The shop is open weekdays from 10 AM to 6 PM, and catering is available for office orders.
7. Horst Sub & Deli, New Waterford, OH

State Route 7 through Columbiana County is not where most people go hunting for a great sub. Horst Sub and Deli makes a strong case for pulling over anyway.
The roast beef and turkey sub is the combination to try. Fresh vegetables and generous fillings make these sandwiches stand out, with a wide variety of chips and drinks alongside.
There is more than sandwiches here. Ice cream is part of the draw, and the S’Mores Milk is a fun sweet pick, while beef sticks make a handy snack for the road.
Doors open at 6 AM Monday through Saturday, so coffee and breakfast work too. The shop closes at 6 PM and stays closed on Sundays.
Outdoor seating, high chairs, and plenty of free parking make it easy for families. It is a relaxed stop between Youngstown and East Liverpool.
8. Young Buck Deli, Cincinnati, OH

Focaccia changes everything. Young Buck Deli on Vine Street bakes its own, then stacks generous sandwiches on top.
The roast beef with barbecue sauce and crispy onions is the one to order first. It is a fresh take on a classic and a good reason to visit Over-the-Rhine at lunchtime.
Other standouts include an Italian Beef and a Pastrami Short Rib. For a true Cincinnati twist, the Goetta Breakfast Focaccia brings the local favorite into the mix.
This family-run spot keeps a clean, welcoming space that suits a quick visit. Hours are short, though, running 11 AM to 3 PM every day except Tuesday, when it is closed.
Parking in the neighborhood is paid, with garage, lot, and street options nearby. Takeout is available if you want to walk your sandwich over to Washington Park.
From Cleveland stacks to Cincinnati focaccia, Ohio clearly takes its roast beef seriously. Pick one close to home, then plan a road trip for the rest.
