What Makes Hoosiers Cross State Lines For Barbecue? These 6 Indiana Smokehouses Keep Them Home

Plenty of Hoosiers have planned a weekend around Memphis ribs, Kansas City burnt ends, or a Texas brisket line. The funny part is that some of the best smoked meat in the Midwest is already sitting inside Indiana, in small towns, college cities, and old downtowns.

This list covers six smokehouses from Lizton to Mishawaka that serve brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and scratch-made sides good enough to cancel a road trip. Save it for your next lunch run or send it to the friend who always says real barbecue only exists down South.

1. Rusted Silo Southern BBQ, Lizton, IN

Lizton is a small Hendricks County town, which makes it a surprising place to find one of the most talked-about barbecue stops in central Indiana. Rusted Silo sits at 411 N State St and leans fully into its roadside roots.

The meats are locally sourced and cooked on a rotating smoking rack. Brisket is the signature, but the Sausage Plate and Sausage Sampler give sausage fans plenty to work with.

Sides stay proudly Southern. The collards are seasoned with pork, and the street corn and peach cobbler round out a tray nicely.

The room has a rustic cabin look with a fireplace, and ordering happens at the counter. Kids are welcome, high chairs are available, and dogs are allowed.

I like the Triple X Rootbeer here as a fun old-school pairing. Plan ahead, since the restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM and does not take reservations.

Saturday afternoon gets busy, so a weekday lunch is the calmer move.

2. Big Hoffa’s Smokehouse and Tavern, Westfield, IN

Pirates and barbecue are not a usual pairing, yet Big Hoffa’s makes the theme work on East Main Street in Westfield. The setting is low-key, and the portions are hefty.

The half-pound beef brisket sandwich is a strong opener for first-timers. Ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, and hot links fill out the smokehouse side of the menu.

What sets this place apart is its playful streak. The Barbeque Sundae, Teriyaki Bowl, and Saigon Special show a kitchen that likes to experiment, and there is even a vegan Veggie Bowl for mixed groups.

Classic sides like mac and cheese, coleslaw, and baked beans are here too. The sassafras sweet tea deserves a spot on the order.

Families get a kids’ menu, high chairs, and changing tables. There is patio seating where dogs are welcome, and Sunday hours run noon to 8 PM, which helps after church or a youth game.

3. Shigs In Pit BBQ & Brew, Fort Wayne, IN

Three house sauces, from sweet to hot to tangy, give every table at Shigs In Pit a little choose-your-own-adventure moment. That variety fits a menu built around St. Louis-style smoked meats.

Burnt ends are the headline for many northeast Indiana barbecue fans. The cheddar jalapeno sausage is another standout, and the Rib Dinner and Pulled Pork Sandwich cover the classics.

Not everyone in a group wants barbecue, and Shigs plans for that with non-barbecue entrees. Baked beans and mac and cheese hold down the side dish lineup.

The Illinois Road location on the southwest side of Fort Wayne is open seven days a week, with late hours until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. That schedule makes it one of the easier stops on this list to fit in.

A kids’ menu and plenty of parking help too.

4. Smokin’ Jack’s Rib Shack, Bloomington, IN

Here is a barbecue joint with a drive-through, which is a rare and very practical perk in a college town. Smokin’ Jack’s sits on West 17th Street in Bloomington and keeps things unpretentious.

Ribs are right there in the name, and the rib tips are a fun way to try them. The brisket sandwich and smoked chicken wings also earn regular attention.

Sides read like a Southern greatest hits list. Coleslaw, baked beans, and cornbread are all on hand.

Inside, a cabin-like room with a fireplace keeps it relaxed and fairly quiet. It draws students, families, and visitors in town for Indiana University events.

Hours run Monday through Saturday, 11 AM to 9 PM, with Sundays closed. Curbside pickup is offered as well.

5. Revolution Barbeque, Lafayette, IN

Candied pork belly might be the most tempting phrase on any menu in downtown Lafayette. Revolution Barbeque at 721 Main St backs it up with scratch-made sides and a deep brisket lineup.

Brisket comes chopped or sliced, plus in sandwich form. Pulled pork tacos give the classic a twist.

The sides are where this spot stands apart. Brisket bourbon baked beans and a smoked sweet potato are not your average add-ons.

Unlike most places here, Revolution accepts reservations and has a private dining room, which helps with birthdays or team dinners. High tables even have bag hooks, a small but welcome detail.

Downtown parking can be tricky, so give yourself a few extra minutes. Sunday hours start at noon.

6. The Prized Pig, Mishawaka, IN

Local oak and applewood do the heavy lifting at The Prized Pig, a snug spot on Lincolnway East in downtown Mishawaka. That wood choice shows up in brisket with a clear smoke ring.

Brisket is sold by the pound, handy for feeding a crowd at home. The Rib Tips Platter and Pulled Pork Platter are dependable dine-in picks.

The menu has some fun detours too. The CBR Quesadilla and jalapeno poppers make good starters, and a choice of sauces lets everyone customize.

I would save this one for a Saturday stroll downtown. Just note it is closed Monday and Tuesday, and Sunday hours end at 5 PM.

For northern Indiana folks tempted to drive into Michigan or Chicago for barbecue, this little pig is a good reason to stay put.
