Steaming Bowls Of Ramen Are Worth Braving The Cold For At These 8 Chicago Noodle Shops

Chicago winters can be rough, but they also give us the best excuse to hunt down a big bowl of ramen. The city has a strong noodle scene, from tiny basement counters to beef-focused shops making their own noodles in-house.

This list covers eight spots spread across Logan Square, Chinatown, the West Loop, Wicker Park, Streeterville, and River North. Some are great for a quick solo lunch, while others call for a reservation and a hungry group.

You will find rich tonkotsu, bright shoyu, spicy miso, wagyu broth, and plenty of vegan and vegetarian bowls along the way. I also included practical notes like hours, reservation tips, and parking, because nobody wants to circle the block in January.

Save this one for the next cold snap, and send it to the friend who always says they know a better ramen place.

1. Akahoshi Ramen, Chicago, IL

Miso is the headliner at this small Logan Square shop on North California Avenue. The Akahoshi Miso Ramen with Ajitama Egg is the signature bowl, and the noodles are made in-house.

The menu goes well beyond one style. Look for Classic Shoyu, Midwest Shoyu, Garlic Tonkotsu, Tonkotsu Ramen, and a Soupless Tantanmen for anyone who wants noodles without the broth.

Plant-based diners get real choices here too. The Aburasoba and Chili Oil bowls are vegan, and there is a full vegetarian menu, so mixed groups can order without stress.

Rotating monthly specials give regulars a reason to come back. I would plan ahead for this one, since hours are short: Tuesday through Saturday, 5 to 9 PM.

Reservations are accepted and recommended for dinner, and there is usually a wait. It is dine-in only with no takeout, and parking is paid street parking.

2. Ramen Wasabi – Logan Square, Chicago, IL

Lunch and dinner both count at Ramen Wasabi, which splits its day into two service windows on Milwaukee Avenue. That makes it handy for a midday warm-up on a gray Saturday.

The bowl lineup covers a lot of ground. Original Tonkotsu, Tokyo Classic Shoyu, Hakata Red, and the vegan Spicy Roasted Garlic Miso are the names to know.

Small plates lean toward Japanese street fare. Takoyaki, Pork Belly Buns, Fried Chicken Buns, and Crispy Brussels Sprouts make it easy to build a shared spread before the noodles arrive.

The room is minimalist with sidewalk views, and there is outdoor seating when the weather allows. High chairs are available for families.

Friday and Saturday evenings get busiest, so a weekday night is the calmer bet. It closes Mondays, and street parking can take some patience.

3. High Five Ramen, Chicago, IL

Head downstairs on Green Street and you will find one of the city’s most talked-about ramen counters packed into a small basement. Seats are limited, and that is part of the appeal.

The Tonkotsu Bowl is the draw, with rich broth, thick slices of pork, and silky noodles. A hip hop soundtrack keeps the energy up.

Vegans and vegetarians are not an afterthought here. The plant-based ramen uses a black garlic broth with crispy maitake mushrooms, and vegan mochi rounds things out.

Reservations are not accepted, and there is usually a wait. Weeknights before the late rush are your friend.

Late-night hunger is covered too, with hours running until 10:30 PM most nights and 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Weekend lunch starts at noon.

4. Strings Ramen Shop, Chicago, IL

Spice lovers, meet Hell Ramen. Strings in Chinatown lets you pick your heat level, and there is a vegan Vegetarian Hell Ramen for plant-based diners who still want the challenge.

The menu has some unusual picks you will not see everywhere. Turkey Shio Ramen and Oden Ramen stand out, along with Kuro Buta Yakisoba and Chicken Gyoza.

It is also one of the friendliest spots on this list for budgets. Most meals land around $10 to $20 per person, and rice bowls and snacks fill out the menu.

A Melon Cream Soda makes a fun finish. Families will appreciate the kids’ menu.

The space is small but stylish, with a patio for warmer days. Hours run late, until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and reservations are not taken, so walk in and grab a seat.

5. Oiistar, Chicago, IL

Buns get nearly equal billing with the bowls at Oiistar, a chic, minimalist spot on Milwaukee Avenue near Division. The Tempura Shrimp Bao Bun is a fun place to start.

On the ramen side, the spicy beef brisket ramen is a cold-weather favorite. Tender pork belly and crispy chicken thigh also show up as toppings and plates.

The modern menu wanders in creative directions. Duck Breast, Fried Garlic Chicken with sambal or sweet sauce, and Togarashi Mussels with andouille sausage keep things interesting.

Vegetarian and vegan ramen are both available, so nobody at the table gets stuck with just a side.

Fridays get busy in the evening, while Wednesday and Thursday afternoons are quieter. It is closed Mondays, and takeout and catering are options.

6. Monster Ramen, Chicago, IL

Pork usually rules the ramen world, but beef takes over at Monster Ramen on Fullerton Avenue. Broth here is rich and intense, and the toppings include sliced wagyu and beef jam.

The house-made noodles have a satisfying chew. Bowls like the Miso Wagyu Broth, Shoyu Plus, and Shio Tokusei show how much range one focus can have.

Gyoza deserve their own mention. The Sui Beef Gyoza come poached, and the Loaded Gyoza is a crowd-pleaser.

A vegan House Shoyu means non-meat eaters can join in. Cupcakes are on the dessert side, which is a playful touch.

Expect to spend a bit more, around $30 to $40 per person. Dinner reservations are recommended, and it is open Wednesday through Sunday evenings only.

7. Birdman Ramen, Chicago, IL

Streeterville gets a lot of shopping traffic, and Birdman Ramen on East Ohio Street is an easy escape from the wind near the Magnificent Mile.

Chicken is the theme, with a shoyu chicken broth at the center of the lineup. Bowls come with flavorful meat and a rich broth.

The appetizer list is wide. Chili Garlic Edamame, a Crispy Tofu Bun, Torikawa Dumpling, and Truffle Fries cover crunchy, savory, and snacky moods.

Save room for dessert. Osaka Cheesecake and Tri-Color Dango make the last course as fun as the first.

It opens daily at 11:30 AM, which makes it a solid lunch stop for visitors. It is good for kids, high chairs are available, and Saturday evening is the busiest time.

8. RAMEN-SAN, Chicago, IL

Night owls, this one is for you. RAMEN-SAN in River North stays open until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, so a late show or game can still end with noodles.

The chicken shio ramen is a lighter option with corn, and tonkotsu is on the menu too. Noodles have great texture, and a Side Noodle add-on is available.

Beyond ramen, the menu goes big on comfort. Kimchi and Fried Chicken, Pork Belly Buns, Crab Rangoon, and Tuna and Avocado Tartare are all options.

Hot Donuts make a sweet finish. Families can order the Kid Tonkotsu Ramen.

The rustic space is relaxed, with free Wi-Fi, valet, and a nearby paid garage. Dinner reservations are recommended, especially on weekend nights.

From miso in Logan Square to late noodles in River North, Chicago ramen gives you plenty of reasons to bundle up and head out. Pick one spot, grab a friend, and let the cold be someone else’s problem.
