Seven Tennessee Country Stores Where Bologna Sandwiches Are Sliced Right At The Counter

Some of the best lunches in Tennessee come wrapped in wax paper and cost less than a tank of gas. The bologna sandwich is a small-town classic, and country stores across the state still treat it with real respect.

At these spots, the meat is cut at the counter, often thick, and frequently fried on a griddle before it lands on bread. This list covers seven stores, from the Cumberland Plateau to the farm roads of West Tennessee and the rolling hills near Franklin.

Some are historic general stores with creaky floors and old shelves. Others are Mennonite markets stocked with bulk foods, baked goods, and Lebanon bologna you will not find at a chain grocery.

Each one earns its place for a different reason, whether that is the history, the setting, or the sandwich itself. Pack a cooler, check the hours, and plan a road trip around lunch.

1. RM Brooks Store, Robbins, TN

Fried bologna is the reason most people pull into this old store on Rugby Parkway. It is the house specialty, and the kitchen treats it that way.

RM Brooks Store is a historic country store and restaurant in Robbins, a small Scott County community right next to historic Rugby. The building keeps that old general store character, which makes lunch feel like a step back in time.

The menu goes beyond the bologna. Burgers and fries are on hand, along with a grilled bologna sandwich topped with cheese, lettuce, and tomato.

Homemade fried pies round things out for anyone who wants dessert to go.

Plan around the schedule. The store is closed Sunday and Monday, open 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday through Friday, and opens early at 8:30 AM on Saturday.

Saturday afternoon is the busiest stretch, so a Tuesday or Thursday morning visit is the calmer choice.

I like pairing this stop with a stroll through Rugby, since the two places sit so close together.

2. Forbus General Store, Pall Mall, TN

Pall Mall is best known as the home of Sergeant Alvin C. York, but hungry travelers have another reason to slow down on North York Highway.

Forbus General Store serves fried bologna sandwiches in a homey, nostalgic setting.

The store mixes shopping and eating under one roof. Shelves hold gifts, while the counter turns out burgers, milkshakes, and that famous bologna sandwich.

Early risers get a real break here. Doors open at 6 AM Monday through Saturday and close at 5 PM, with Sunday off.

Saturday is the crowded day, while weekday mornings early in the week tend to be quiet.

Parking is free in the lot and on the street, and there is free Wi-Fi if you need to check directions before heading back out into Fentress County’s open countryside.

3. Yoders Country Store, Paris, TN

German bologna and a bottle of Dutch root beer make one of the more memorable lunch combos in West Tennessee. You can get both at this country grocery on Anderson Road outside Paris.

Yoders Country Store has a full deli where meats and cheeses are sliced right at the counter. Sandwiches are made to order, so you choose exactly how you want yours built.

The shopping side is just as useful. Expect a big selection of bulk foods, specialty pantry items, farm-raised meats, and local dairy.

It is easy to walk in for a sandwich and leave with a full bag.

Hours run 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday. Weekday mornings are the quietest, and there is a restroom on site for road trippers.

4. The Country Cupboard, Crossville, TN

Lunch with a side of shopping is the whole idea at this Mennonite-run market on West Avenue. The Country Cupboard pairs a sandwich counter with shelves of farm products and homewares.

Fried bologna is a menu highlight. Bologna and cheese are also cut at the counter for customers who want to take some home.

The BBQ sandwich and waffle fries have their own fan base. Before leaving, look for homemade bread, pimento dip, Lebanon bologna, and Amish food items.

Expect to spend about $10 to $20 per person. The store offers dine-in, takeout, and delivery, with free parking.

Hours are 9 AM to 4:30 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. I would save this one for a weekday lunch, since Saturdays draw the biggest crowds.

5. Sutton General Store, Granville, TN

Thick is the word here. Bologna at Sutton General Store has been known to come sliced about as wide as a thumb.

Granville is a tiny historic town on Cordell Hull Lake, with fewer than 500 residents. Its general store anchors the community with homestyle meals and live bluegrass music.

Saturday is the day to aim for if you want the full experience. The store stays open until 8:30 PM that evening, much later than the 4 PM weekday closing.

Regular hours run Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. It is closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, so double-check your calendar before making the drive.

A sandwich, some bluegrass, and a walk around a lakeside town make for an easy afternoon.

6. The Davis General, Franklin, TN

Motorcyclists and Sunday drivers know Leipers Creek Road for its twisting curves and farm views. The Davis General sits at the rural Boston crossroads along that route, making it a natural stopping point.

The historic store serves gourmet sandwiches and breakfast. The fried bologna and cheese is a standout, and the Cuban gets attention too.

Ordering happens at the counter, with no table service. There is indoor and outdoor seating, plus coffee, cinnamon rolls, and a kids’ menu.

Sandwiches generally land in the $10 to $15 range, a bit higher than other stops on this list. Live music adds to the appeal on some days.

Unlike most country stores, this one opens on Sunday from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Weekday hours are 7 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday runs 8 AM to 5 PM.

7. Yoder’s Country Market, Bulls Gap, TN

Lebanon bologna is surprisingly hard to find in East Tennessee. Yoder’s Country Market in the small railroad town of Bulls Gap keeps it on hand.

Bologna sandwiches here inspire people to drive an hour just for lunch. The deli slices cold cuts at the counter and builds sandwiches to order.

Other deli picks include bologna salad, pimento cheese, and mini wheat loaves. The bakery side turns out homemade treats like fried turnovers in flavors such as black raspberry and cream cheese.

Hours are 8:30 AM to 5 PM most days, with later 6 PM closings on Thursday and Friday. The market is closed Sunday, and there is on-site parking.

Grab a sandwich for the road and a turnover for later, if it lasts that long.
