Every Thanksgiving Week, Ohioans Line Up At Busy Market Bakeries For Pies - These 6 Sell Out First

Thanksgiving dinner in Ohio usually comes down to one big question: who is bringing the pie? Plenty of families skip the rolling pin and head straight to a market bakery or farm stand instead.

These six spots, from historic city markets to busy orchard counters, are where pie shoppers show up early and leave happy. Grab a pen, because a few of them have short hours and shorter pie shelves.

1. Lucy’s Pastry Palace, Dayton, OH

Short hours make this Dayton stop a planning job. Lucy’s Pastry Palace opens only Friday through Sunday, so pie shoppers need to time their trip.

You will find it inside the 2nd Street Market, near the West Entrance and across from the Welcome Wagon and the management offices. The bakery focuses on gourmet pastries and specialty cakes, with a lineup that leans into Mediterranean favorites and sweet treats from around the world.

Pies are part of the menu too, and the pumpkin pie is the kind of slice that keeps disappearing from the plate. Prices are friendly, mostly in the $1 to $10 range per person.

Hours run 11 AM to 3 PM on Friday and Sunday, and 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturday. I would go Saturday morning during Thanksgiving week, since a Friday-only window leaves little room for second chances.

2. MAKERS BAKERS Co. Bakery & More, Cincinnati, OH

Sweet potato pie or key lime? At Makers Bakers Co., that debate gets settled by buying both.

The bakery sits right in the center of Cincinnati’s Findlay Market, and it is best known for signature cinnamon rolls and specialty banana pudding. The pie side of the case holds its own, with key lime and sweet potato standing out as crowd favorites.

The menu stretches well past pie. Rainbow cake, Oreo brownies, strawberry crunch cheesecake, cherry Danish and iced cinnamon rolls all show up, plus a vegan Makers line and coffee.

The staff are known for being warm and welcoming, and the shop proudly describes itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. There is no dine-in, so plan on takeout or delivery.

Hours are 9 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Saturday and 10 AM to 4 PM Sunday, closed Monday. Paid lot parking is nearby.

3. Theresa’s Bakery, Cleveland, OH

Cannoli might be the headliner, but the pie case at Theresa’s Bakery deserves a second look.

This stand lives inside Cleveland’s West Side Market on West 25th Street, one of the city’s best-known public markets. Theresa’s specializes in cannoli in many flavors, with cheesecake being a standout, along with eclairs, chocolate monks and fruit tarts.

For Thanksgiving, the lemon meringue pie is the one to know. Mini key lime pies, chocolate pie and strawberry shortcake round out the options, and there is even stuffed pepperoni bread for the savory crowd.

Watch the calendar closely. The bakery is closed Tuesday and Thursday, open 8 AM to 5 PM Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 AM to 4 PM Sunday.

4. Patterson Fruit Farm, Chesterland, OH

Geauga County takes its Dutch apple pie seriously, and Patterson Fruit Farm is a big reason why.

This multi-generational farm market and bakery on Caves Road sells seasonal produce, donuts and pies. The Dutch apple has a devoted fan base, and apple, peach and pecan pies are also on the lineup.

Timing matters here. Saturdays and Sunday afternoons get busy, while weekday mornings from Monday to Thursday are the calmest.

The market is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, and free parking makes a quick in-and-out trip easy. Pickup is available in store, but there is no delivery.

5. Bauman Orchards Inc, Rittman, OH

Since 1929, the Bauman family has been growing fruit in Rittman, starting with 18 acres. Today the orchard covers more than 117 acres.

The numbers are impressive. The Rittman location includes about 20,000 apple trees and 3,000 peach trees, with 25 apple varieties and 15 peach varieties.

That fruit ends up in the farm market alongside homemade pies, cookies and gift baskets. Cider presses run from September through May, so fresh cider is in stock for the holidays too.

The market also carries unique items for cooking, handy if you are still building a menu. Hours are 8 AM to 6 PM weekdays and 8 AM to 5 PM Saturday, closed Sunday, with a free parking lot on site.

6. Lynd Fruit Farm, Pataskala, OH

Some families show up before the doors open, carts ready, just to grab their Thanksgiving pies. That is a normal morning at Lynd Fruit Farm.

This large orchard in Licking County offers U-pick apples in many varieties, a pumpkin patch, a corn maze and apple cannons in season. The market is the year-round draw, packed with hundreds of specialty foods and farm products.

Pies are the star of the bakery side, and the fry pies have a loyal following of their own. The apples sold here also hold up well, which is good news for anyone baking at home.

The market opens daily at 10 AM and closes at 6 PM. Restrooms and free parking are available, and arriving at opening is the smart move during Thanksgiving week.
