Bring A Cooler To These 6 Wisconsin Sausage Makers Before The Holiday Rush Hits

In Wisconsin, a holiday table without good sausage can look a little empty. Brats, summer sausage, smoked links, and old-world wursts show up at everything from family parties to game-day spreads.

The trouble is that everyone else has the same idea, and the best butcher counters get busy fast once the season kicks in. So grab a cooler, clear some trunk space, and plan your stops early.

These six shops stretch from the St. Croix River to Lake Michigan, and each one brings something a little different to the meat case. Some are big, some are small, and one keeps hours so limited you will want to mark your calendar.

All of them are the kind of places Wisconsin families drive out of their way for. Here is where to stock up before the lines get long.

1. Louie’s Finer Meats, Cumberland, WI

Out-of-town plates in the parking lot are a regular sight at this Cumberland butcher shop. People come from well beyond Barron County to load up on brats and smoked meats before heading home.

Louie’s is known for a big selection of sausages, brats, and smoked meats, and the counter fills up ahead of holiday weekends. Cheeses and other treats round out the shop, so the cooler tends to fill faster than planned.

The store sits at 2025 Superior Ave and keeps generous hours. It is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday until 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday is the busiest stretch, so I would aim for a weekday. Monday through Wednesday tend to be the calmest times to shop.

There is a free parking lot on site, and the shop also offers catering. If you are hosting a crowd this season, that is a handy option to ask about.

2. Usinger’s Famous Sausage | Fred Usinger, Inc., Milwaukee, WI

More than 70 varieties of sausage come out of one historic downtown Milwaukee factory. That number alone makes Usinger’s a different kind of stop from a typical butcher counter.

The business works from original family recipes, and the retail shop sits right inside the historic building on N. Doctor M.L.K.

Jr. Drive. Any sausage they make is available there, including varieties many shoppers have never heard of.

Meats and cheese share space with the sausages, which makes it easy to build a full holiday spread in one trip. It is a smart place to pick up something unfamiliar for the relatives who think they have tried it all.

Plan around the schedule. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Sundays.

Parking is easier than you might expect downtown, with a free lot and free street parking. Delivery is also offered for anyone who cannot make the drive.

3. Miesfeld’s, Sheboygan, WI

Sheboygan calls itself the Bratwurst Capital of the World, so a butcher shop here has a reputation to live up to. Miesfeld’s handles that pressure with a huge store and a wide spread of quality meats and specialty sausages.

Plenty of shoppers make it their only source for brats. Some even plan road trips around a stop here when they get close to the lakeshore.

The shop is at 4811 Venture Dr, with a free parking lot. Hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday mornings and afternoons are the peak, and the store gets busy even with all that floor space. Weekday evenings near closing are usually quieter.

It is closed Sundays, and there is no delivery. Bring that cooler and plan to haul your brats home yourself.

4. RJ’s Meats, Hudson, WI

Need a special cut for the holiday roast? RJ’s takes special cuts and orders with advance notice, which is exactly the kind of planning this season calls for.

The locally owned Hudson shop near the St. Croix River focuses on premium fresh meats and handcrafted sausages. Its layout is split into clear sections, including a bratwurst area, a frozen section, a butcher counter, and a deli.

The staff are known for being friendly and knowledgeable. That helps when you are standing in front of the brat case trying to pick just a few.

RJ’s is at 1101 Coulee Rd and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday afternoons and Saturdays draw the biggest crowds.

Curbside pickup and delivery are both available. There is ample parking too, so loading the cooler is simple.

5. Bavaria Sausage, Fitchburg, WI

German holiday traditions run deep in Wisconsin, and this Fitchburg deli leans all the way in. Bavaria Sausage makes its links from authentic Bavarian recipes.

Fresh kielbasa and rouladen are among the specialties. Shelves of imported European groceries and goods from Germany let you finish the menu in one trip.

Spending usually lands around $10 to $20 per person. The shop is takeout only, with no dine-in seating and no public restroom.

Find it at 6317 Nesbitt Rd, just southwest of Madison. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Saturday.

Saturday is the crunch day. I would save this stop for a Monday or a Wednesday morning, when the line is shorter.

6. House of Home Made Sausage, Germantown, WI

Timing matters more here than anywhere else on this list. House of Home Made Sausage opens only four days a week.

The shop is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is closed Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.

Smoked meats are the focus, and Hungarian summer sausage is the signature. That makes it a great pick for holiday snack boards and gift boxes.

The selection changes from time to time. Repeat trips can turn up something new, so it pays to stop in whenever you are nearby.

The address is N112W14934 Mequon Rd in Washington County. Delivery is not offered, so bring a cooler and arrive early before the pre-holiday rush.
