Small-Town Florida Has 9 BBQ Joints That Locals Have Quietly Loved For Decades

Florida gets plenty of attention for its beaches and theme parks, but some of its best meals are served far from the crowds. In small towns from Polk County to the Suwannee River country, family barbecue spots have been feeding the same communities for generations.

A few of these places opened when Harry Truman was in the White House, and others have held their ground through decades of growth and change. They are not flashy, and most of them are not trying to be.

What they offer is pit-smoked pork, slow-cooked brisket, homemade sides, and the kind of steady loyalty that only comes from doing things right year after year. This list covers nine of those joints, each with its own reason for earning a spot.

Some are perfect for a road trip lunch, while others are worth planning a whole Saturday around.

1. Peebles Bar-B-Q, Auburndale, FL

Back in 1947, a little barbecue shack opened on Dixie Highway in Auburndale. More than seven decades later, Peebles Bar-B-Q is still serving pit-style barbecue to a town known for its citrus roots and quiet lakes.

The setting is pure old Florida. Meals are served in a screened-in room with a casual, country feel, and counter service keeps things moving quickly.

The menu sticks to what has worked for generations. BBQ pork and BBQ beef sandwiches are the backbone, along with plates of ribs, brisket, and chicken.

For something a little different, the BBQ Potato and BBQ Salad are on the menu too. Save room for the banana pudding, a classic finish at a place this old-school.

Timing matters here. Peebles is open only Thursday through Saturday, 11 AM to 9 PM, and it closes for the summer, so check before making the trip.

Prices typically run $10 to $20 per person, and the free lot usually has plenty of space.

2. Johnson Barbeque, Plant City, FL

Plant City is famous for strawberries, but barbecue fans know another reason to exit the interstate. Johnson Barbeque has been smoking meat in town since 1954.

The menu is bigger than most old-school joints. Alongside chopped pork and brisket sandwiches, there are wings, burgers, fried catfish, fried chicken, Smokin’ Nachos, and a sandwich called the Pig Mac.

Sides lean proudly Southern. Collard greens come with pepper sauce, and creamed corn and green beans round out the plates.

Weekends bring one extra reason to stop by. A smoked ribeye shows up on the menu only on those days, and it has earned a loyal following.

Families will find a kids’ menu, high chairs, and a relaxed dining room. There is also a drive-through, which makes this an easy grab for anyone heading down I-4.

Hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 AM to 8:30 PM. Reservations are not accepted, and Friday and Saturday evenings get the busiest.

3. Hickory Hollow, Ellenton, FL

Eastern Carolina barbecue is not something you expect to find along the Manatee River. Hickory Hollow has been proving otherwise since 1984, with more than four decades at the same spot on US-301.

The star is the Eastern Carolina Vinegar Pork, a tangy style that sets this place apart from most Florida joints. Baby back ribs and barbecue beef are also on the menu, along with a sweet Carolina-style sauce.

I like this stop for the sides alone. Corn fritters, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, Brunswick stew, and mac and cheese make it easy to build a plate that feels like Sunday dinner.

Char-grilled pork shanks and seafood add even more range. The daily cobbler is the natural way to end the meal.

The dining room is simple and homey, and the place is still family-run. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 8 PM, and curbside pickup is available for anyone in a hurry.

4. Hungry Harry’s Famous Bar-B-Que, Land O’ Lakes, FL

Land O’ Lakes has changed a lot since 1985. Subdivisions and traffic have grown, but Hungry Harry’s has stayed put as one of the community’s steady anchors.

The building looks like a rustic barn, which fits the area’s roadside country character. Inside, the focus is hearty platters of meat and scratch-made sides.

Baby back ribs are a major draw, and burnt ends and the Sampler Platter give indecisive eaters a way out. Brisket, chopped pork, and BBQ chicken sandwiches cover the lighter side.

The sweet corn casserole is the side that sets this place apart. Cornbread and sweet tea also get plenty of attention.

An all-you-can-eat option is available for serious appetites. There is also a kids’ menu, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating.

Hours are generous, running 10:30 AM to 9 PM every day. Saturday evening is the busiest stretch.

5. Brian’s Bar-B-Que Restaurant & Catering, DeLand, FL

A salad bar at a barbecue joint might sound odd, until you see how many people head straight for it. Brian’s Bar-B-Que in DeLand pairs smoked meat with an all-you-can-eat salad bar, and that combo has kept folks coming back for more than 40 years.

The look leans Western, with a covered patio for outdoor meals. The menu goes beyond barbecue, with steaks and burgers sharing space with the ribs.

Baby back ribs are a headliner, and potato salad is a classic pairing. Portions run large, so arriving hungry is a smart plan.

Deals add to the appeal. Thursdays feature an all-you-can-eat spare ribs special.

DeLand’s historic brick-lined downtown is close by, making this an easy lunch stop during a day in town. Brian’s is open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM, with the busiest crowds on Monday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.

6. Pearl Country Store & Barbecue, Micanopy, FL

Gas, groceries, and brisket all under one roof. That is the setup at Pearl Country Store & Barbecue, which sits on Highway 441 in Micanopy, a town of roughly 650 people.

Micanopy is known as Florida’s oldest inland town, and the store fits right in with its 1950s and 1960s look. It is the kind of stop that rewards a slow drive between Gainesville and Ocala.

Barbecue comes in generous portions with house-made sauces. Brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, and rotisserie smoked chicken are the main attractions, with slaw and mac and cheese on the side.

Early risers have an advantage here. Doors open at 6 AM every day, and breakfast is served, which is rare for a barbecue spot.

Desserts and coffee also earn attention. The store closes at 7 PM Monday through Thursday and 8 PM Friday through Sunday, and reservations are not taken.

7. Big Wood BBQ and Grill, Live Oak, FL

Out in Suwannee County, where railroad history and farm fields shape the landscape, Big Wood BBQ and Grill has become a regular stop for locals and travelers alike.

The family-owned restaurant has a cabin theme and TVs throughout, so it doubles as a good place to catch a game. A full-service bar sits onsite.

Baby back ribs and sliced pork lead the menu, with pulled pork and pulled pork sandwiches close behind. The baked beans are a favorite side.

Appetizers lean fun and fried. Fried pickle spears, mushrooms, okra, and a blooming onion are all on the list, plus a salad bar for balance.

A drive-through makes it handy for anyone passing through on the way to the springs. Hours run 11 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday and until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Sunday is short, from 11 AM to 3 PM, so plan an early lunch.

8. Blackburn’s BBQ, Eagle Lake, FL

Two pounds of potato, smoked and loaded with barbecue. That single menu item tells you a lot about Blackburn’s BBQ in Eagle Lake, a Polk County town of about 3,000.

The family-owned spot is known for signature brisket and pulled pork, served in a recently remodeled dining room. Space is on the small side, so busy evenings can fill it fast.

Beyond the famous potato, giant BBQ nachos are another big seller. Brisket and pulled pork sandwiches cover the classics.

The sides are where things get interesting. Smoked cabbage stands out next to potato salad, baked beans, and mac and cheese, while fried pickles, mushrooms, and onion rings work as starters.

Apple pie is the dessert to know. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 8 PM, and curbside pickup is offered.

9. Hog Wild Country Cafe, Interlachen, FL

Cowboy Eggrolls are not a dish most people expect in rural Putnam County. At Hog Wild Country Cafe in Interlachen, they share the menu with Southern barbecue and hearty comfort food.

Interlachen is home to only about 1,400 people, and this cafe is a gathering spot for the area. Tender brisket is a big reason why, served on its own or in a brisket sandwich.

Smoked turkey, cowboy beans, and cornbread fill out the plates. Steaks are another strong part of the lineup.

This is one of the few places on the list that does breakfast. Doors open at 8 AM Tuesday through Sunday, and Sunday morning into the afternoon is the busiest time of the week.

A private dining room is available for groups, and dogs can join at the outdoor seating. Ice cream makes a simple sweet finish.

The cafe closes at 8 PM and stays closed on Mondays. It is a fitting final stop on a list built around small towns and steady cooking.
