Five Small-Town Tennessee Cafes Open For Coffee At Sunrise

Some of the best coffee in Tennessee gets poured before most people have found their car keys. In small towns across the state, a handful of cafes unlock the doors at 5 or 6 in the morning and get the pots going for farmers, commuters, road trippers, and anyone who simply likes an early start.

This list covers five of them, from a lakeside breakfast stop near Cherokee Lake to a courthouse square coffee shop in Hickman County. Each one opens at or before sunrise on at least some days, and each brings something a little different to the table.

You will find classic diners with comfort food, a pancake specialist, and a downtown spot that also scoops homemade ice cream. Hours vary, and a few are closed on certain days, so check the details before you set your alarm.

Grab a travel mug and start planning your next early drive.

1. Sunrise on Cherokee, Rutledge, TN

A cafe named for the sunrise had better open early, and this one keeps its promise with a 6 AM start. Sunrise on Cherokee sits on Lakeshore Drive in Rutledge, a rural East Tennessee community of about 1,300 people near Cherokee Lake.

The focus here is breakfast and coffee. The coffee gets real attention, and so does the tea selection, which is a nice bonus for anyone who skips caffeine from beans.

Omelets are a good place to start, and the kitchen leans on fresh ingredients.

It is also one of the easiest stops on this list for your wallet, with prices running about $1 to $10 per person. The setting is casual, kids are welcome, and solo diners fit right in.

Plan around the schedule. The doors are open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 AM to 1 PM, and closed Sunday and Monday.

Parking is free in the lot and on the street, and takeout is available if you want your coffee on the road.

2. AJ’s All Star Cafe, Huntingdon, TN

Five in the morning, seven days a week. That schedule alone earns AJ’s All Star Cafe a spot here, since it opens earlier than anyone else on this list.

The cafe is a local diner in Huntingdon, the Carroll County seat in rural West Tennessee, with a population of roughly 4,400. Expect classic breakfast plates, comfort food, and burgers once the lunch crowd rolls in.

The coffee is a menu staple, and there is a solid tea lineup too.

Families will find high chairs and a kids’ menu, and groups can call ahead since reservations are accepted. The mood is casual and quiet, which suits an early cup.

Sunday mornings get the busiest, so a weekday visit is the calmer move. Hours run 5 AM to 2 PM daily, parking is free, and dogs are allowed outside.

3. Dayton Coffee Shop and restaurant, Dayton, TN

Look at the walls when you sit down. Pictures honoring military service hang around the dining room, and they set the tone for a place that feels rooted in its community.

Dayton Coffee Shop and restaurant is a traditional Southern diner on 2nd Avenue in Dayton, a Rhea County town of about 7,000 known for its historic storefronts. The kitchen sticks to home-cooked comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it offers some healthier options and desserts as well.

Coffee comes first for early arrivals, with doors opening at 6 AM Monday through Friday. The day stretches all the way to 7 PM, which makes it the rare sunrise spot that also works for supper.

A few practical perks stand out. There is free Wi-Fi, curbside pickup, a private dining room, and free parking.

Just remember it is closed on weekends.

4. SUNRISE (The Breakfast Place) LLC, Decherd, TN

Pancakes are the headline act in Decherd. SUNRISE (The Breakfast Place) is known for big ones, including Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, plus Belgian waffles and a lineup of omelets.

Bring an appetite if you order the hungry man breakfast. It comes with 3 eggs, 3 bacon, sausage, turkey sausage, ham, home fries, a biscuit with gravy, and 2 pancakes.

I would save that one for a day with a long drive ahead.

The menu also uses organic veggies and farm fresh eggs, and there is a full vegetarian menu. Eggs cooked to order and breakfast potatoes get plenty of love, and so does the coffee.

Decherd is a quiet farming and railroad community in southern Middle Tennessee with about 2,400 residents. The restaurant opens at 6 AM Tuesday through Sunday and wraps up at 12:30 PM.

Weekend mornings fill up, so early really is better here.

5. The LOCAL Place, Centerville, TN

Espresso at sunrise and homemade ice cream by afternoon is a combination you do not find on every town square. The LOCAL Place in Centerville pulls off both.

The shop sits at 111 S Public Square, right on the historic courthouse square of this Hickman County town of about 3,600. Specialty espresso drinks, frappes, cold brew, and Italian sodas fill the drink menu, and bagels make an easy early bite.

Later in the day, waffle sandwiches, a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, and salads take over. The 32-ounce Local Lemonade bucket is a fun pick for warm afternoons.

Weekday hours start at 6 AM and run to 6 PM. Saturday opens later, at 9 AM, and Sunday is closed.

Outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, and catering round things out.

Whichever of these five cafes is closest to you, the plan is the same. Set the alarm, find a seat, and let the coffee do the rest.
