Southern Maryland is a place of long two-lane roads, small county seats, and plenty of reasons to stop and eat. If you are driving through Charles, St. Mary’s, or Calvert County, the best meals are often found at the local diner, where the coffee keeps coming and breakfast runs big.
This list covers six spots, from a retro 50s joint with poodle skirts to a tiny Southern kitchen with only a couple of tables. Save it for your next trip down Route 301 or Route 4, because a good diner can turn a long drive into a road trip you remember.
1. Marie’s Diner, La Plata, MD

Big appetite, small budget? Marie’s Diner on Crain Highway in La Plata is the stop for exactly that situation.
The menu is massive, and the portions match. Breakfast is the headliner here, with steak and eggs, shrimp omelets, home fried potatoes, and chicken biscuits and gravy all on the table.
Lunch and dinner lean into Southern comfort food, and crab cakes make a fitting nod to Maryland. Save room, because the dessert case is one of the reasons people keep coming back.
Most plates land in the $10 to $20 range. The crowd is mostly locals, which tells you plenty about this down-home, country-style spot in the Charles County seat.
Hours run 6:30 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday, and 6:30 AM to 2 PM on Sunday. Reservations are not accepted and there is usually a wait on weekend mornings, but the free lot means parking is rarely a headache.
A kids’ menu and high chairs make it easy for families too.
2. Annie’s, Charlotte Hall, MD

Two tables. Four chairs.
That is the whole dining room at Annie’s, so plan on taking your breakfast to go.
Don’t let the size fool you. This Charlotte Hall kitchen turns out Southern-style comfort food with real home-cooked character, and the service has the friendly pace of a true Southern kitchen.
Shrimp and grits sit near the top of the menu. Blueberry pancakes, omelets, French toast, corned beef hash, sausage, and bacon cheeseburger meals round things out, along with homemade sweet tea and orange juice.
Timing matters here. Annie’s is open Wednesday through Sunday from 7 AM to noon and closed Monday and Tuesday, so it is strictly a morning stop.
I would save this one for the early leg of a drive through St. Mary’s County. Curbside pickup and takeout make it easy to grab a meal and keep rolling, and the free parking lot is right there.
3. The Flashback Grill and Diner- Lexington Park, Lexington Park, MD

Poodle skirts are part of the uniform at The Flashback Grill and Diner, and that tells you everything about the mood.
The whole place is a 50s throwback, from the decor to the music. It sits just behind the corner of Great Mills Road and Route 235 in Lexington Park, easy to miss if you are not looking.
Menu names play along with the theme. The grilled cheese is called Goin Steady, the banana split goes by Bobby Sue, and the milkshakes are listed as All Shook Up.
Beyond the fun names, the food is hearty and fairly priced. Huge pancakes, waffles, French toast, bacon cheese fries, and stuffed Philly cheesesteaks keep the simple menu busy.
Breakfast and lunch only here. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 7 AM to 3 PM and Sunday from 7 AM to 2 PM, with Mondays off.
4. Linda’s Cafe, Lexington Park, MD

Some diners chase trends. Linda’s Cafe on Three Notch Road sticks with the old-school basics, and that is the point.
Expect eggs made to order and a coffee cup that rarely sits empty. The staff and regulars treat each other like family, which gives the room a relaxed, small-town vibe.
The menu leans into down-home cooking. Country fried steak, pork chops and eggs, sausage gravy, biscuits, grits, and home fries cover breakfast, while the Reuben, double BLT with egg, and crab cake sandwich handle lunch.
For something a little sweeter, the Maple French Toast Sandie is a fun twist on a breakfast sandwich.
Linda’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 AM to 2 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Weekends fill up fast, so a weekday visit is the calmer choice, and the cafe does accept reservations.
5. Bulrushes Cafe, Prince Frederick, MD

Breakfast and a little shopping in one stop is a rare combo, and Bulrushes Cafe pulls it off with a small shop right at the front.
The cafe sits on Central Square Drive in Prince Frederick, the Calvert County seat. It makes a handy break for drivers heading south along Route 4.
Omelets are the specialty. Guests can build their own, made to order, and gluten-free bread is available for anyone who needs it.
The menu is limited but well done. Sausage gravy and biscuits, ham and cheese omelets, fresh muffins, and a hot honey chicken sandwich at lunch show the range.
Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 7 AM to 2 PM, closed Mondays. Tuesday mornings tend to be the busiest, and the cafe takes reservations if you are traveling with a group.
6. Silver Diner, Waldorf, MD

Late-night hunger on Route 301? Silver Diner in Waldorf stays open until 11 PM most nights and until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
The look is classic Americana, with jukeboxes at the tables and a 50s and 60s feel throughout. It is part of a regional chain, but the menu goes well beyond standard diner fare.
Many dishes use locally sourced ingredients. Highlights include pickle-brined fried chicken and waffles, wild Carolina shrimp and grits, buttermilk pancakes, the Lumberjack Breakfast, and home-style bread pudding.
Here is what sets it apart from the rest of this list. Silver Diner offers a full vegan menu and a full vegetarian menu, which makes it a strong choice for plant-based travelers in Southern Maryland.
Plates run a bit higher, around $20 to $30 per person. It opens daily at 7 AM, takes no reservations, and has changing tables, high chairs, and a kids’ menu for families.
