Kansas Burger Fans Keep Coming Back To These 5 Old-School Walk-Up Stands

Some of the best burgers in Kansas come from places so small you could miss them on a quick drive past. These are the walk-up windows, tiny shacks, and roadside stands where you order fast, grab a sack or a basket, and eat at a picnic table or in your car.

They have stayed popular for years because they keep things simple, affordable, and consistent. This list covers five of them, from a century-old slider counter in Salina to a highway drive-in in tiny Howard.

Each one earns its spot for a different reason, whether it is grilled onions, handmade shakes, or chili cheeseburgers. Save it for your next road trip, or send it to the friend who always knows where to eat.

1. The Cozy Inn, Salina, KS

Here is a burger stand that has been around for more than 100 years and is still too small for a fryer. That one detail explains the whole menu.

The Cozy Inn sits in downtown Salina at 108 N 7th St, in a compact historic storefront with a six-stool counter inside. Outside, sidewalk picnic tables handle the overflow.

The stars are small onion-smashed sliders, and most people order them by the sack. You can also buy them one at a time, and there is a kids meal with two burgers.

Ordering is easy. Head to the walk-up window, ask for your burgers by the bag or each, and wait for your name to be called.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Afternoons on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday get busy, so a Sunday morning or Monday evening stop is the calmer play.

2. Grandstand Burgers, Overland Park, KS

Suburban Johnson County is full of chain drive-thrus, which makes this little kiosk on Merriam Drive stand out even more.

Grandstand Burgers is a tiny, vintage-style pit stop with picnic seating and no indoor dining room. Burgers are grilled to order, and the portions are big for the price.

The menu leans hearty. Think Bacon Double Cheeseburger, Bacon Triple Cheeseburger, and the Double Fire Burger for anyone who likes some heat.

Sides are part of the fun here. You can split an order with half fries and half rings or half fries and half tots, and corn nuggets show up too.

Real handmade shakes round things out.

Plan ahead on a couple of points. There is no restroom, there is usually a wait, and it is closed Sundays.

Open hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dogs are allowed, and there is a kids menu for smaller appetites.

3. Toots Drive-In, Howard, KS

Road trippers cutting through Elk County on KS-99 have a solid reason to slow down in Howard, a town of fewer than 1,000 people.

Toots Drive-In is a tiny local spot with a walk-up window, mobile ordering, and outdoor seating. It has fed some families across generations, which says a lot about how steady the burgers have stayed.

The menu is bigger than the building suggests. Chili cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, onion rings, fried pickles, jalapeno peppers, and okra all make appearances.

Save room for dessert. Homemade pies are a signature, including German chocolate, and the cherry limeade is a popular pairing with a burger.

Toots is open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with breakfast and coffee on offer too. High chairs and a kids menu make it an easy family stop, and parking is free.

4. The Snack Shack on Johnson Drive, Mission, KS

Lunch and a stroll go together nicely on Johnson Drive, since a city park sits right next door to this retro stand.

The Snack Shack is a compact, family-owned spot with vintage pictures on the walls. It clearly takes the history of retro diner fast food seriously.

A small patio comes with its own outside order window. That makes it easy to grab a burger without stepping indoors on a nice day.

Burgers are hand-formed and dressed with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The Double Cheeseburger Combo is a natural pick, with fries and onion rings on the side.

For something cold, a chocolate malt or cherry limeade fits the theme. Kids get their own burger basket.

Watch the hours, since they shift. It is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Tuesday through Friday, but closes at 3 p.m. on Monday, Saturday, and Sunday.

5. Burger Station Inc, Winfield, KS

At first glance, Burger Station does not look like much. It is a small shack on 7th Avenue in downtown Winfield, and that is exactly the appeal.

Burgers start with fresh beef and get the classic treatment of grilled onions, dill pickles, and mustard. Chili cheeseburgers are another favorite, and fries are made to order.

Prices here are the lowest on this list, usually running between $1 and $10 per person. That is rare for a fresh, made-to-order burger these days.

Service is counter only and takeout focused. There is no restroom and no indoor dining room, so plan to eat in the car or carry your bag somewhere nearby.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it is closed Sundays. Friday mornings into afternoons draw a crowd, while evenings tend to be quiet.
