Every small Tennessee county seat has a courthouse in the middle of town, and somewhere on that square there is usually a cafe where folks gather at noon. These spots serve plate lunches, sandwiches, pie, and coffee to farmers, clerks, lawyers, and road trippers at the same tables.
This list covers nine of them, from West Tennessee to the Cumberland Plateau, each with its own reason to pull over. Save it for your next drive and come hungry.
1. Court Square Cafe, Covington, TN

Breakfast starts at 6 a.m. here, but the real action on the Tipton County square comes at lunchtime. Covington is a West Tennessee county seat of about 8,600 people, and this cafe sits right on its historic downtown square.
The menu leans hard into home-style country cooking. Meatloaf, club sandwiches, chicken and dressing, and fried catfish are the kinds of plates that keep regulars coming back, and daily specials rotate through the week.
Desserts, coffee, and tea round things out, and there is a kids’ menu with high chairs for families. Portions run generous, with most meals landing in the $10 to $20 range.
Timing matters. Tuesdays tend to be the busiest, and the lunch rush can slow things down a bit.
Hours run Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Friday stretching to 7 p.m. for a supper option. Free street parking and a lot make the stop easy.
2. Dixie Cafe, Byrdstown, TN

Chocolate gravy over biscuits is not something you find on every menu, and that alone makes Byrdstown worth a detour. The Dixie Cafe sits at 31 Courthouse Square in a Cumberland Plateau town of fewer than 1,000 people.
The kitchen turns out home-style Southern cooking from breakfast through supper. Hand-breaded chicken strips, a seafood platter, and homemade pies like peanut butter are regular favorites.
Weekends bring live music, with bluegrass adding a little extra life to the room. Friday evenings get the biggest crowds, so weekday lunch is the calmer bet.
Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Reservations are not taken, but parking is free and plentiful around the square.
3. Cafe Gilly, Charlotte, TN

Charlotte keeps things classic. The Dickson County seat still has a traditional courthouse square, and Cafe Gilly sits right on it at 23 Court Square.
I would save this one for a light, budget-friendly lunch. Chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwiches are the midday staples, paired with flavored lemonade made with real fruit.
Mornings bring coffee and espresso drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and house-made baked sweets. Most visits cost under $10 per person.
Plan around the short schedule. The cafe is open weekdays only, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and dogs are welcome outside.
4. Court Square Deli, Dresden, TN

Four days a week. That is the window for lunch at this little deli on the Weakley County square, so it pays to plan.
Dresden is a farming community and county seat in Northwest Tennessee with roughly 3,000 residents. Court Square Deli, at 114 N Wilson St, fits right into that pace as a small, friendly cafe serving deli lunches.
The appeal is simple. Good food and attentive service make it an easy pick for anyone passing through town at midday.
Hours run Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and weekends are closed, so a weekday road trip lines up best.
5. BBQ Caboose Cafe, Lynchburg, TN

A barbecue joint with its own live country music radio show is not a typical courthouse-square cafe. Then again, Lynchburg is not a typical tiny town.
With around 600 residents and visitors arriving from all over, the walkable square around the Moore County Courthouse stays busy. BBQ Caboose Cafe, at 217 Main St, is one of the spots on that square serving a sit-down lunch.
The menu goes beyond pulled pork. Look for Caboose Kickin’ Ribs, a BBQ stuffed baked potato, house specialty BBQ pizza, jambalaya, red beans, and the Piggy Mac.
Walls covered in memorabilia give the room plenty of personality. Pecan pie makes a fine finish.
It is open seven days a week starting at 11 a.m., closing at 5 p.m. most days and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Saturday afternoons are the busiest.
6. The LOCAL Place, Centerville, TN

Waffle sandwiches for lunch, then homemade ice cream for dessert. That combination gives The LOCAL Place a personality all its own on the Centerville square.
The shop faces the historic Hickman County Courthouse in a Middle Tennessee town of about 3,700. It works as a coffee shop, lunch stop, and gathering place in one.
Specialty espresso drinks, cold brew, frappes, and Italian sodas cover the drink side. Lunch includes a Buffalo chicken sandwich, chef salad, and those waffle sandwiches, plus a 32-ounce Local Lemonade bucket for sharing.
Free Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, and a kids’ menu make it flexible for almost any crowd. Hours run weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
7. Rustic Grounds Coffee Co., Woodbury, TN

Old brick, fresh purpose. Rustic Grounds fills a refurbished historic building on the square in Woodbury, the Cannon County seat of roughly 3,000 people.
Breakfast tacos and sandwiches are the stars, backed by quality coffee and a solid tea selection. Portions are generous and prices stay reasonable.
The space works for a quick coffee meetup, a relaxed lunch, or a small celebration with friends. It is quiet and clean, with Wi-Fi for anyone needing to catch up on email.
Watch the schedule closely. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, only until noon on Wednesday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
8. Rojas Kitchen, Carthage, TN

Frog legs and catfish on one side of the menu, Mexican favorites on the other. Rojas Kitchen brings both to the Smith County Courthouse square in Carthage.
This Upper Cumberland river town has about 2,400 residents and a limited number of places to eat. That makes a family-owned spot with a big menu a welcome part of downtown.
Southern plates include country fried steak, chicken livers, burgers, and fried okra. Daily lunch specials keep weekday visits interesting.
There is a private dining room for groups and a kids’ menu for families. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Monday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, when the after-church crowd fills the room.
9. Second Street Coffee House, Pulaski, TN

A record player spinning soul music sets the tone at this coffee house across from the Giles County Courthouse. It is a fun change of pace from the classic plate-lunch cafe.
Pulaski is an agricultural hub and college town of about 8,300 in Southern Middle Tennessee. Second Street Coffee House fits that mix, drawing students, laptop workers, and lunch regulars into a great old building full of character.
Breakfast sandwiches use fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the pasta salad is a lunchtime favorite. Coffee drinks and a strong tea lineup cover the rest, with most visits under $10.
It hosts live performances and has outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Courthouse squares across Tennessee still run on conversation and a good lunch. Pick a town, find the square, and grab a seat.
