Tempe's Oldest Diners Still Serve Chicken-Fried Steak Like It's 5 At These 5 Spots

Chicken-fried steak is the kind of breakfast that asks for a nap afterward, and Tempe still knows how to make it right. Across town, a handful of old-school diners keep the classic going with thick breading, peppery gravy, and eggs on the side.

Some of these spots have wood paneling and cramped booths, while others lean into big windows, folk art, or a woodsy cabin look. If you want a hearty plate without fancy twists, these five places are a smart place to start, and you might just find your new weekend breakfast spot.

1. Harlow’s Cafe, Tempe, AZ

Wood paneling, small booths, and tight quarters give Harlow’s Cafe a 1970s look that has barely budged. Plenty of Tempe folks call it an institution, and the menu explains why.

The Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs comes with thick breading, sausage gravy, and eggs that are often ordered over medium. It is a plate built for a slow morning, not a quick snack.

Other old-school favorites fill out the menu, including Corned Beef Hash, Mae’s Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, a Buttermilk Stack, and a French Dip for the lunch crowd. A full vegetarian menu is also available.

Find it at 1021 W University Dr, close to the ASU crowd, which keeps the student energy alive. Hours run 8 AM to 2 PM, but note that it is closed on Tuesdays.

Saturday and Sunday mornings get busy, so a weekday visit is the easier play. Most plates land in the $10 to $20 range.

2. Sunny’s Diner, Tempe, AZ

East Coast diner energy in the middle of the Valley is a fun combination, and Sunny’s pulls it off on E University Dr. Big windows and a retro setup give it the classic look kids and grown-ups both seem to enjoy.

The menu is large and pulls in some international touches, but the comfort food is the reason to come here. Chicken Fried Steak sits right next to Biscuits and Gravy and Corned Beef Hash and Eggs.

Sweet-breakfast fans have options too. Banana Nut French Toast, pancakes, and Signature Waffles keep the other side of the table happy.

I like Sunny’s for an early start, since doors open at 6 AM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM on Sunday, with service wrapping at 3 PM. Portions are generous, and service tends to move quickly.

Free Wi-Fi, counter seating, and takeout or delivery make it flexible. Wednesday afternoons are usually the calmest time to grab a seat.

3. Jim’s Coney Island Cafe, Tempe, AZ

Don’t let the name fool you. Jim’s Coney Island Cafe is known for New York-style hot dogs, yet breakfast regulars often skip right past them for the chicken-fried steak.

The plate shows up with eggs, crispy hash browns, and golden sourdough toast. It is a simple setup done well, and many count it among the best chicken-fried steaks in town.

The old-fashioned diner setting keeps things friendly and low-key. Pancakes, omelets, waffles, Biscuits and Gravy, and New York Steak and Eggs round out the morning lineup.

Value is a big part of the appeal, with most meals in the $10 to $20 range. The coffee gets steady refills too.

Head to 1750 N Scottsdale Rd. It opens at 6 AM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM on Sunday, closing at 3 PM most days and 2 PM on Sunday.

4. US Egg Breakfast and Lunch, Tempe, AZ

Close to four decades in business is a long run for any Arizona breakfast spot. US Egg, a local chain, has kept its Baseline Road location busy by sticking with consistent diner favorites.

The chicken-fried steak and eggs comes in a hefty portion, with flavorful gravy and fresh fruit on the side if you want something lighter with it. It is the kind of order that might cover lunch too.

The menu goes well beyond comfort classics. Look for the Santa Fe Skillet, Meat Lovers Skillet, Denver Omelette, and gluten-free Benedicts and waffles, plus full vegetarian and vegan options.

American folk art decorates the dining room, giving it a cheerful look. Outdoor seating is available, and dogs are welcome outside.

The address is 131 E Baseline Rd Ste F, open daily from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Reservations are not accepted, so Sunday mornings can mean a wait.

5. Black Bear Diner Tempe, Tempe, AZ

Craving chicken-fried steak at 8 PM? Black Bear Diner on S Priest Dr is the one spot here that keeps serving well past lunch.

Hours run 6 AM to 9 PM most days and stretch to 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. That makes it handy for breakfast-for-dinner fans.

The Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs is the headliner, but the Chicken Fried Steak Omelette is a fun twist with battered chunks folded right in. Corned beef hash, hobo omelets, and freshly squeezed orange juice are on the menu too.

A rustic, woodsy look gives the place its own personality, separate from the vintage diners on this list. Portions are big, and free coffee refills help.

Families will find a kids’ menu, high chairs, and changing tables. It does not take reservations, and dogs are allowed inside.

Big appetite or not, this list proves Tempe’s diner tradition is still holding steady, one plate of gravy at a time.
