These 8 California Pie Shops Have Been Baking The Same Family Recipes For Generations

Some recipes are too good to change, and California has a handful of pie shops that clearly agree. The places on this list are still rolling crust and filling pies the way a mom, grandma, or founding couple did decades ago.

You will find mountain-town bakeshops, farm stands surrounded by orchards, a tiny Los Angeles counter that opened in 1947, and an Oakland cafe known for Southern hospitality. Each one is still tied to the family that started it, which is getting rarer every year.

That matters, because a family recipe carries more than flavor. It carries a town’s history, a few holiday traditions, and plenty of road trip memories.

If you love a flaky crust or a good crumb topping, this list gives you eight solid reasons to plan a drive. Save it for apple season, or send it to the friend who always orders dessert first.

1. Julian Pie Company, Julian, CA

Back in 1986, Liz Smothers opened a bakeshop in Julian using her own family recipes for pie crust and filling. Today the business is still family-owned, run by Liz and her son Tim.

The menu sticks close to what made the shop popular. Apple pie is the headliner, and the Apple Mountain Berry Crumb is a favorite for anyone who likes a crispy crumble on top.

There is also pecan pie, cobbler, and a pie called the San Diego.

Not everything comes in a pie tin. The shop makes apple cider donuts, cinnamon rolls, and pie crust cookies dusted with cinnamon sugar.

I like that you can grab a slice with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream and sit out on the patio.

You will find it at 2225 Main St, open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Weekend afternoons get busy, so a Wednesday morning visit is the calmer choice.

Dogs are allowed, and coffee is on the menu too.

2. Gizdich Ranch, Watsonville, CA

Four generations of the Gizdich family have kept one set of pie recipes going on this Watsonville farm. Vincent Gizdich founded the ranch in the 1930s, and the scratch recipes created by Nita Gizdich are still what fills the bakery case.

The ranch is famous for two things, strawberries and pies. On busy days, people happily stand in line for a homemade pie, which tells you how seriously this area takes its dessert.

Gizdich Ranch is more than a bakery stop. The property grows apples and berries, presses juices, and runs both a gift shop and an antique shop.

That mix makes it an easy half-day outing in the farm country near Monterey Bay.

Head to 55 Peckham Rd. Hours run 9 AM to 5 PM daily, and there is a free parking lot on site.

3. Mom’s Pie House – Julian, Julian, CA

Yes, there really was a Mom. Anita Nichols founded this Julian bakery in 1984 and passed her scratch pastry dough and pie recipes down to her family.

Just a short walk from Julian Pie Company, Mom’s makes the town feel like a friendly pie rivalry. Here the fruit lineup leans broad, with Apple Cherry Crumb, Rhubarb Strawberry Flaky, Apple Crumb, and classic apple pie.

Pecan is on the list as well.

Savory fans have a reason to stop too, since the bakery is known for chicken pot pies. Slices can come with ice cream or whipped cream, and whole pies are available to go.

Find it at 2119 Main St. Hours are 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 6 PM on weekends. Saturday afternoons bring a line, so try a Tuesday or Thursday morning if you can.

4. Linn’s Restaurant, Cambria, CA

Olallieberry pie is the reason many travelers slow down in Cambria. Linn’s turned that berry into its signature, and the story began at a farm stand.

John and Peggy Linn started out baking Peggy’s original family berry recipes. Their son Aaron Linn and the next generation now carry the pie-making tradition forward.

Linn’s has grown into a full restaurant with American country-style cooking. Breakfast brings a Country Breakfast and a three-egg burrito, while later in the day you can order pot roast, pot pies, or a Dungeness crab melt.

There is a full vegetarian menu, a kids’ menu, and a gift shop.

It sits at 2277 Main St and serves daily from 8 AM to 4 PM and again from 5 to 9 PM. I would save this one for a Highway 1 road trip.

Dinner reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

5. Ikeda’s, Auburn, CA

Road trippers heading toward Tahoe know the Auburn exit for Ikeda’s. Roy and Peggy Ikeda founded the business, and later generations of the family still bake its fruit pies.

Part bakery and part gourmet market, Ikeda’s serves its signature pies alongside burgers and shakes. That makes it a handy lunch break with dessert built in.

The fruit pie selection runs deep, and marionberry is one of the standouts. That berry is usually tied to Oregon, so finding it here is a nice surprise.

The market also carries fresh produce and prepared foods.

Ikeda’s is at 13500 Lincoln Way. It opens at 9 AM daily, closing at 7 PM Monday through Wednesday and 8 PM Thursday through Sunday.

Weekend afternoons are busiest, so a weekday stop keeps things quick.

6. Lois The Pie Queen, Oakland, CA

Any cafe that calls its founder a queen had better back it up with pie. Lois Davis did, and her son Chris Davis now keeps his mother’s Southern pie recipes going at this Oakland corner spot.

The pie case is the star. Raspberry key lime is the tangy signature, with classic key lime and pecan pie close behind.

Whole pies and slices are both available.

Breakfast is a big deal here too. Fried chicken with a buttermilk waffle, pork sausage patties with eggs, and a Denver omelette show off the Southern comfort side of the menu.

Visit 851 60th St, Tuesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM. It is closed Mondays and does not take reservations.

Free street parking is available nearby.

7. The Apple Pan, Los Angeles, CA

Since 1947, The Apple Pan has served burgers and pie from one small counter on Pico Boulevard. Alan and Ellen Baker opened it, and three generations of their descendants have kept the original pie recipes in use.

Change is not really the plan here. The menu stays short, which is part of the appeal.

Pie fans usually choose between apple and banana cream, with cherry cream also listed. A slice of apple pie can come with vanilla ice cream.

Before dessert, the Hickoryburger and Steakburger with fries are the classic orders.

The address is 10801 W Pico Blvd. Hours are 11 AM to 11 PM most days and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, so it works for a late slice. Expect a wait, no reservations, and tricky parking.

8. Boa Vista Orchards, Placerville, CA

Five generations is a long time to work one stretch of land. Boa Vista Orchards has farmed the Apple Hill countryside for more than 100 years.

It is open 363 days a year, so you do not have to wait for fall. The open-air market sells baked pies, frozen pies to take home, apple donuts in several styles, and pastries.

The shopping does not stop at dessert. Shelves also hold canned and jarred goods, dairy, organic meats, fruit, and produce, which makes it a useful grocery stop.

Find it at 2952 Carson Rd, open daily from 7:30 AM to 6 PM. Dogs are allowed, and there is a free parking lot.
