You'll Want To Bring Quarters To These 5 Tennessee Diners With Working Jukeboxes

Some diners serve good food, and a few also let you pick the soundtrack. Across Tennessee, a handful of retro spots still keep working jukeboxes ready for a coin and a song choice.

That means your burger, shake, or plate of biscuits comes with a little bit of 1950s fun on the side. This list covers five diners from Nashville to the Smokies and Chattanooga where the music is part of the meal.

Some are open around the clock, some close in the afternoon, and one even puts a jukebox right at your table. Each stop has its own reason to visit, whether that is late-night hours, homestyle cooking, or a long history in its neighborhood.

So check your car’s cup holder for spare change before you go. You may want a few extra quarters, because picking just one song is harder than it looks.

A quarter buys you one song here, and every table gets its own jukebox. Pick a tune at your booth, and it plays through the whole restaurant.

Mel’s Drive-In sits at 152 2nd Ave N in downtown Nashville, just a short walk from the busy Broadway area. The look is pure 1950s, with classic American comfort food to match.

The smashburger is a strong pick, and milkshakes are a menu highlight. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served, and there is a kids’ menu plus full vegan and vegetarian menus.

The hours are the real surprise. Mel’s stays open 24 hours on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and runs from 7 AM to midnight most other days, which makes it a handy late-night stop after a downtown show.

Friday night and Saturday get the biggest crowds. Reservations are accepted, and parking downtown means paid garages, lots, or street spots, so plan a few extra minutes.

2. Mel’s Classic Diner, Pigeon Forge, TN

Oldies fans, this one is for you. Mel’s Classic Diner keeps a jukebox stocked with 50s and 60s hits inside a shiny, chrome-trimmed dining room.

You will find it at 119 Wears Valley Rd in Pigeon Forge, an easy stop between the Parkway attractions and a drive toward Wears Valley. Booth seats and upbeat music set a fun, nostalgic tone.

The food leans hearty and homestyle. Roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, a chicken salad sandwich with sweet relish, grilled hot dogs, and Keith’s Patty Melt all show up on the menu.

Portions are generous, and prices typically run about $10 to $20 per person. Breakfast is served too, starting at 7 AM.

Doors stay open until midnight Monday through Saturday, and the diner is closed on Sunday. There is a free parking lot, though reservations are not taken, so expect a wait on busy Friday and Saturday evenings.

3. City Cafe Diner, Chattanooga, TN

Craving pancakes at 3 AM in Chattanooga? City Cafe Diner on Broad Street never closes, so the griddle and the jukebox are always available.

The jukebox gets a modern update here, holding over a thousand songs. That is a lot of choices for a single quarter, so you might want to decide on your pick before you sit down.

Breakfast is served all day, and the menu covers hearty American plates with big portions. Then there is the bakery side, with a huge lineup of cakes that make it tough to skip dessert.

Service moves quickly, and most meals land in the $10 to $20 range. A full vegetarian menu and a kids’ menu round things out.

The downtown location at 511 Broad St means paid parking in garages, lots, or on the street. Weekdays are calmer, while Friday and Saturday nights draw the biggest crowds.

4. THE DINER, Sevierville, TN

Spot the gleaming silver building on Winfield Dunn Parkway, and you have found THE DINER. It looks like it rolled straight out of the 1950s, and an old-school jukebox inside keeps the theme going.

The menu sticks to comfort classics. Meatloaf, catfish, and country fried steak are standouts, along with homemade soup and a Reuben sandwich.

Breakfast is served all day, burgers fill out the casual side, and housemade treats cover dessert. Vegan and vegetarian menus are available too.

Plan around the hours. THE DINER opens at 8 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends, closing at 4 PM most days and 6 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Free parking is plentiful, which helps during busy Smoky Mountain trips. I would save this one for a big breakfast before heading toward Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.

5. Elliston Place Soda Shop, Nashville, TN

Here is a twist on the jukebox idea. At Elliston Place Soda Shop, the booth jukeboxes are set up for private listening, so your song choice stays at your table.

This neighborhood institution sits at 2105 Elliston Pl in Nashville, near the Vanderbilt and Midtown area. Tiled walls, jukeboxes, and a beautifully redone interior give it a historic, old-school look.

The soda fountain side is the star. Ice cream sundaes, floats, sodas, and milkshakes share the menu with comfort food like flaky biscuits, sweet tea, and daily specials.

Live music happens on weekends, and a to-go window helps when you are short on time. There is also a parking lot, which is handy in this busy part of town.

Hours run 7:30 AM to 4 PM Monday through Saturday and 9 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. Midweek afternoons and Fridays tend to be busiest.

Whichever diner you pick first, keep a few quarters handy. Good food tastes even better with a song you chose yourself.
