In Yuma, a bag of tamales is more than takeout. It is how families stock up for holidays, Sunday dinners, and busy weeknights.
Some of these kitchens have been feeding the city since the 1950s and 1960s, while newer spots bring Salvadoran recipes into the mix. Here are seven family-style places where the tamale order still matters.
1. The Chile Pepper, Yuma, AZ

Yuma has had this family-owned kitchen since 1954, which makes it older than a lot of the neighborhoods around it. That long run says plenty about how the city feels about its food.
Tamales with rice and beans are the classic order here. The menu also covers rolled tacos, burritos, a Carne Asada Combo, Machaca Burrito, Huevos Rancheros Plate, and elote, with meals or a la carte choices.
The practical side is strong too. There is a drive-through, curbside pickup, and plenty of room inside, so grabbing a big order to go is easy.
You can find it at 2401 S 4th Ave. Hours run Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 9 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM, and most meals land in the $10 to $20 range.
2. El Charro Cafe, Yuma, AZ

Big tamales are the calling card at this homey West 8th Street cafe. They come large and smothered in chili sauce, and the beef version is a regular favorite.
El Charro has been part of Yuma dining for decades, and the room has a historic, lived-in charm to match. Homemade flour tortillas show up alongside fajitas, enchiladas, and cheese crisps.
Portions run generous across the menu. Other picks include the Machaca Burro, a Mini Chimichanga Tray, Mexican Style Chicken Fried Steak, and churros for dessert.
Plan around the schedule, since it is closed Mondays. It opens Tuesday through Friday from 11 AM to 8 PM and weekends from 10 AM to 8 PM at 601 W 8th St, with a kids menu and free parking.
3. Mr. G Drive-In | Mexican, Yuma, AZ

Drive-in culture never quite left 4th Avenue, and Mr. G is a big reason why. This counter-serve spot dates to 1962 and shares its family roots with The Chile Pepper.
The tamales hold their own on a menu known for homemade tortillas. Rolled tacos are another big draw, sold singly, as a combo of four shredded beef, or by the dozen.
That dozen option tells you how people order here. Families pick up in bulk, and the drive-thru keeps the line moving.
Bean and cheese burritos, machaca burritos, carne asada fries, burgers, and brownies round things out. Find it at 501 S 4th Ave, open Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 9 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM.
4. La Casa Deli, Yuma, AZ

Early birds have an advantage at La Casa Deli. Doors open at 6 AM most days, and the kitchen closes by mid-afternoon.
Take-out tamales are a specialty, with tender, moist masa and generous fillings that taste homemade. They are the kind of thing you grab for the whole household.
The rest of the menu leans traditional. Menudo rojo, pozole, and Mexican breakfast plates make it a solid weekend morning stop, and Sunday mornings are the busiest time.
The setting is quiet and casual, and prices stay reasonable. It sits at 349 W 32nd St, open Monday through Thursday 6 AM to 3 PM, Friday and Saturday 6 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday 7 AM to 3 PM.
5. Las Herraduras Mexican Restaurant, Yuma, AZ

Chili colorado is the move with the tamales at Las Herraduras. The red sauce pairs well with the masa, and the plate usually comes with rice and beans.
This Latino-owned restaurant keeps things down to earth. Homestyle enchiladas, tortas, tacos, chile rellenos, and a Super Burrito fill out the menu.
Sunday brunch is a popular family outing, so expect Sunday mornings to fill up. It also accepts reservations, which helps for larger groups.
The address is 2256 S 4th Ave, just down the road from The Chile Pepper. Hours run Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 8 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 7 PM, with delivery and takeout available.
6. Tacos Mi Rancho | Mexican, Yuma, AZ

Bright colors set the mood at this 4th Avenue spot near downtown. The food is hearty and familiar, and the tamale with enchilada sauce stands out.
Chimichangas, fried or not, are a popular pick. Barbacoa, chile verde, enchiladas, chilaquiles, caldo de res, and shrimp tacos also show up on the menu.
Skinny, crispy rolled potato taquitos make a good side order with tamales. Weekend mornings are busiest, while weekday evenings tend to be quieter.
Visit 188 S 4th Ave. It opens at 8 AM Monday through Thursday and 7 AM Friday through Sunday, closing at 7:30 PM daily.
7. Pupuseria Cabanas, Yuma, AZ

Not every great tamale in Yuma is Mexican. This Salvadoran kitchen on West 8th Street brings a different style to the table.
The tamal de elote is the one to know. Made with sweet corn, it is a sweeter take that pairs nicely with savory tamales on the same order.
Pupusas are the other headliner, including versions with loroco, a Central American flower bud. Some Mexican dishes are served too.
Bring cash, since it is cash only. It is at 1945 W 8th St, closed Mondays, open Tuesday through Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 8 PM, with outdoor seating and free parking.
