If you want to see some of our rankings which includes many ‘off off menu items’, here is a list where we outline some of the top In and Out Burger secret menu items.

In and Out Secret Menu Basics

Let’s start with some of the basic menu items you can order without any hassle. These secret menu items are well known and trained by the staff; so they won’t give you any funny looks when you order them.

In and Out French Fries

  • Animal Style Fries
  • Well Done Fries
  • Cheese Fries

In and Out Animal Style Burger

  • Animal Style with Grilled Onions
  • Animal Style with Raw Onions

In and Out Grilled Cheese

The In and Out Burger Grilled Cheese typically includes two slices of melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and spread (their signature sauce), all sandwiched between two toasted buns. You can also customize it by adding or subtracting ingredients like onions (raw or grilled), or requesting mustard and/or ketchup instead of spread. It’s a great vegetarian option for those who love the taste of In-N-Out without the meat!

Does In and Out Offer a Vegan Option?

In and Out Burger does not offer a specific vegan burger option on their menu. Their menu is quite limited compared to other fast food chains, focusing primarily on burgers, fries, and shakes. The closest option for vegans would be to order their fries, which are cooked in sunflower oil, but it’s important to note that their fry preparation area is the same where animal products are handled, which might not be suitable for some vegans. Additionally, their buns, while vegetarian, are not vegan, as they contain dairy products. Therefore, vegan options are extremely limited at In-N-Out.

In and Out Protein Style Burger

The Protein Style Burger is one of my favorite combinations for the In and Out secret menu and I’m going to explain why. The buns are great, don’t get me wrong, but they’re buns! A Protein Style Burger takes the amazing beef patties and American Cheese and really enhances the flavors because we all know lettuce is just like eating air. 😂 Add some spread or make it Animal Style and you have yourself a really tasty burger without the bloating from the bread. My personal favorite is to get a 3×3 Protein Style. You’re welcome.

The In and Out Flying Dutchman

The In and Out Flying Dutchman is one of the more interesting and random items on their secret menu, consisting of just two beef patties and two slices of American cheese with no bun. The origin of its name isn’t officially explained by In and Out Burger, but it likely gets the inspiration from maritime lore. The Flying Dutchman, in legend, is a ghost ship doomed to sail the oceans forever, unable to dock. The connection between the name and the menu item could be seen as whimsical or enigmatic, fitting the item’s “secret” status and simplicity—just the essentials of a burger, “sailing” without the usual “ship” of a bun. This aligns with In and Out Burger’s fun approach to their secret menu, where items often have unique, memorable names.

Why would you order the Flying Dutchman?

Personally, one of my favorite combinations for the In and Out secret menu is to take a Flying Dutchman and place it on top of an order of Animal Style Fries or Cheese Fries. Some locations will do you a solid and slice the Dutchman in 1/4’s so its easier to load on top. This combo is pure heaven, trust me on this.

In and Out Three By Three (aka the In-n-Out 3×3)

Two patties are sometimes never enough when you get that Double Double, so they have a Level Up opportunity to get a 3×3 (Pronounced ‘Three By Three’). It’s simply three beef patties with three layers of melted American cheese, the same way you would eat a normal In and Out Cheeseburger. If you’re interested in menu prices, be sure to check out our other In-n-Out menu and posts here. Average calories of the 3×3: 860 calories.

In and Out Four By Four (aka the In-n-Out 4×4)

Now we’re entering some pretty dangerous territory stacking four In and Out Burger beef patties with four pieces of melted American cheese with the In and Out Four by Four. This is a monster of a burger and you have to be pretty hungry to eat this monster. Average calories of the 4×4: 1050 calories.

But don’t think In and Out will stop you at four with the 4×4 for the In and Out secret menu! There are people eating 10 patties with 10 slices of American cheese on a single burger, and it’s called (you guessed it) 10×10 (Ten by Ten). Average calories of the 10×10: 2,370 calories.

In and Out Secret Menu: Special Cooking Requests

In and Out Secret Menu: Mustard Grilled

This is another trick I learned only recently: You can have In and Out prepare your burger a specific way away from the norm known as “Mustard Grilled.” When you order your burger “Mustard Grilled,” after placing the raw beef patty on the grill, the cook will spread mustard on it before cooking. Then, as the patty cooks, onions are added on top (if you want onions), and the combination is grilled together. This method infuses the patty with the tangy flavor of mustard, adding a unique twist to the classic In-N-Out burger taste.

In and Out Secret Spicy Menu: Mustard Grilled with Chopped Chilis

This In and Out secret menu item may vary on location however it did work for my location near me in Los Angeles. Instead of getting chopped chilis on top of the patty in your burger, In and Out will take your chopped chilis and combine them in the Mustard Grilled Burger so you’ll have a spicy kick to every bite. It’s great for someone that likes spicy and mustard. If you don’t like either, you might want to move on from this secret menu option. 😂

In and Out Secret Menu DIY: Off Menu Secrets

There’s a lot of talk on social media about these In and Out Burger secret menu items and I’m going to list them, however it’s important to know that there aren’t any In and Out locations that will do these entire combinations on request. Assembly is required, but I’ll walk you through what you need to do.

The In and Out Secret Menu Patty Melt

This In and Out Burger patty melt is one of my favorites to built if you want a little crunch in your life. You can’t tell any In and Out Burger restaurant you want a Patty Melt; they will flat out deny you. But you can order the following and put it together yourself:

  • Toasted buns on the side, extra toasted
  • Flying Dutchman
  • Package of In-n-Out Sauce

Flip the toasted buns inside-out so you have the soft outside of the buns on the inside. Then take your Flying Dutchman and throw it in between the buns, add your In and Out Burger sauce on the top and bottom to give it that zesty taste.

We even did a video on this patty melt here:

The In and Out Chopped Cheese Sandwich

  • Flying Dutchman with Extra Cheese
  • Side of buns extra toasted
  • Side of In and Out sauce
  • Chopped chilis
  • Mustard / Ketchup

The In-n-Out Secret Menu doesn’t have a chopped cheese and this requires a little elbow grease to accomplish. You’re taking a Flying Dutchman and throwing it in your red In and Out tray. Take your plastic knife and slice it up as much as possible, throw on the In and Out Sauce, Chopped Chilis, and a little ketchup and mustard. Mix it up while to make almost a mash, and you’re going to throw it on the extra toasted buns (assemble backwards as the Patty Melt).

In and Out Secret Menu Drinks

You can’t eat at In and Out Burger without grabbing one of the secret drinks. These unique drink options are always available and are perfect compliments to the burger and fries, giving you that sweet and salty combination for a perfect meal. Go big or go home!

Neapolitan Shake

This shake mixes strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors all in one cup. It’s like having three different shakes at once, giving you a taste of each flavor with every sip.

Black and White Shake (Chocolate and Vanilla)

Combining chocolate and vanilla shakes, this option gives you the best of both worlds at In and Out Burger. If you can’t decide between chocolate or vanilla, this shake lets you enjoy both flavors together.

Root Beer Float

A classic soda flat, this drink mixes root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The ice cream floats on top of the root beer, creating a creamy and fizzy experience that’s fun to drink. Highly recommend trying this at least once.

Arnold Palmer (Lemonade and Iced Tea)

Named after the famous golfer, this drink blends lemonade and iced tea. It’s a refreshing choice that offers the sweetness of lemonade with the mild taste of tea, perfect for a sunny day.

Lemon-Up (Lemonade and 7-Up)

Mixing lemonade and 7-Up, this drink is both sweet and bubbly. It offers a zesty lemon flavor with the added fun of soda fizz, making it a lively beverage choice.

In and Out Secret Menu: Free Hot Chocolate

This is another surprise to a lot of people, but In and Out Burger has a perk to give out free hot chocolate on rainy days to children under 12. The hot chocolate is made with Ghirardelli cocoa, giving you a high-quality, hot cocoa for kids to enjoy. This policy is a reflection of In-N-Out’s commitment to family-friendly values and top notch customer service, aiming to create a positive experience for all visitors, regardless of the weather. Keep in mind, the availability of this offer might depend on the location and management’s discretion, so it’s always a good idea to ask about it at your local In-N-Out during a rainy day.
