The 20-Year Journey of Baja Blast at Taco Bell
A quick Baja Blast from the past, Taco Bell first introduced the drink in collaboration with the Mountain Dew brand in 2004. It marks the first time that a beverage company and a fast-food restaurant have agreed on a partnership to release their beverage exclusively for the fast-food restaurant. The Baja Blast drink was actually made for Taco Bell to boost their drive-thru beverage sales, but they got more than that as the drink became loved by both Taco Bell and Mountain Dew fans.
With the success of the Baja Blast drinks through loyal fans, Taco Bell and Mountain Dew released a series of more product line flavors and freeze until it made a debut for retail release in 2014. The Baja Blast turned into Mountain Dew’s permanent flavor in January 2024, together with their release of two new 20th Bajaversary flavors: Laguna Lemonade and Point Break Punch.

Diving Deeper in The Baja Blast Treats
The lasting popularity of Taco Bell’s Baja Blast gained a fandom of their own that Taco Bell felt the need to release new items featuring desserts. Yes, you read that right. Taco Bell is releasing Baja Blast-inspired desserts for the Baja Blast lover in us! Check out the unique lineup of exclusive offerings that Taco Bell created just for their popular drink.

- MTN DEW Baja Blast Gelato – The gelato treat, as announced in the Live Más Live event, is set to release on September 3, 2024, for Taco Bell Rewards Members. This was a previous test item for Southern California locations, and Taco Bell fans who have tasted it say that it tastes exactly like the beverage with the refreshing tropical lime hint in it.
- MTN DEW Baja Blast Pie – Have you ever seen a fountain-flavored pie? It may sound weird, but this pie is worth trying with its smooth texture and buttery curd, which gives a lime-flavored baja gear sweetness as expected from the Baja Blast Drink. The pie will come out later this year for a nationwide release at all Taco Bell stores.
- MTN DEW Baja Blast Twists – Featuring a limited time cinnamon-like twist covered in Baja Blast powder for the kind citrus taste. No announcement has been made regarding its release date, but it is also expected to come out later this year for a nationwide release at any Taco Bell location.

From The Club
It amazes me how Taco Bell collaborated with Mountain Dew to create the Baja Blast drink, which will be the brand’s staple for many years to come. There may be similar Mexican fast food joints like them, but at least they created their own branding and identity with the drinks and unique Taco Bell menu that they offer. As for the breakthrough innovations of desserts, the gelato and pie look weird to me, but I would be happy to try them when they hit a nationwide release. Better save me one of those free Baja Blast drinks for an unbeatable match of some of their taco fan favorites!
