Mix-It-Up Brand Pulls Smoothie Packs Due to Listeria Risk

Blendtopia Products LLC has to take back 29,078 cases of its 7-ounce frozen superfood smoothie kits. These kits might contain Listeria, a germ that can make people really sick.

The smoothies to watch out for are the “Glow,” “Detox,” “Energy,” “Immunity,” and “Strength” kits. If you have any of these at home, look for “Best By” dates of July 2021, October 2021, or November 2021. These smoothies were sent to stores all over the country and also sold online.

Blendtopia found out about the problem when they checked their smoothies to ensure they were good. They think it’s just one ingredient that caused the trouble. To be extra safe, they’re working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring these kits back from the stores.

So far, nobody has reported getting sick from these smoothies. But it’s essential to be careful and know what to look for if you have these kits at home.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is tricky because food with it doesn’t look or smell bad, but it can still make you sick. If you’ve had any of these smoothies and start to feel bad, tell your doctor right away. Watch for signs like throwing up, feeling sick in your stomach, having a fever that won’t go away, muscles that hurt, a really bad headache, or a stiff neck. If you ate any of the recalled smoothies, keep an eye out for these signs for a long time—up to 70 days after you had the smoothie—because it can take that long for you to feel sick.

Doctors need to perform special tests to determine whether someone has Listeria because it can appear like other sicknesses.

Who should be extra careful?

Some people need to be very careful about Listeria. This includes pregnant women, older folks, little kids, and anyone who is already sick with something else that makes their body not fight germs as well. Even though moms-to-be might only feel slightly ill, it could be worse for their babies.
