Chipotle has launched another promotion to celebrate the NBA Finals! This time, they’re giving out meals free of charge. But, there’s a catch.

After a long grueling 82-game season and one of the most unpredictable playoffs in recent memory, we’re finally at the NBA finals! The Dallas Mavericks are going up against the Boston Celtics. Apart from the exciting plays we’re about to witness, Chipotle is giving us another reason to be excited.

In anticipation of the 2024 NBA Finals, Chipotle announced they’re launching a new promotion called “Free Throws, Free Codes.” During each game of the finals, Chipotle is handing out up to 17,500 free meals! That’s nearly enough to give a meal to everyone in an entire stadium! This is definitely a can’t miss deal. So if you want to join in on the fun, here’s how it works.

Whenever a player heads to the foul stripe and makes all their free throw attempts during the game, Chipotle will share a code. You can find this code on X (formerly Twitter) on Chipotle’s profile via @ChipotleTweets.

But what exactly counts as free throws? Well let’s take a look at scenarios that qualify for free throws in this promotion:

  • Making both free throws during a two-point attempt.
  • Making all three free throws during a three-point attempt.
  • Converting an additional free throw after making a basket.
  • Sinking the free throw awarded after a technical foul.
  • Hitting both free throws following a flagrant foul.

The first 500 fans to text the code shared to 888222 will receive a unique code that you can redeem for a free item from Chipotle. Keep in mind that standard text and data rates still apply to these interactions.

While it’s important to note that this is not an official promotion affiliated with the NBA, it’s still a fun little way for Chipotle to engage and promote their brand.

So if you want to enjoy free meals from Chipotle while you watch the NBA Finals, keep your eyes peeled and your phones ready during Game 1 on Thursday, June 6 at 8:30 PM ET.

Previous Chipotle Basketball Promotions

This isn’t the first time Chipotle had a fun way of engaging customers with freebies during the NBA finals. Just last year, they had another promo that saw them handing out free Burritos every time a 3-pointer is made in the 2023 NBA Finals between the Denver Nuggets and the Miami Heat. Cleverly called the “Free-pointer,” this saw them giving away a maximum of about 10,500 entrees once the games are over. It’s also worth noting that both of these teams were the top 3-point shooting teams from the playoffs with the Heat averaging 13.1 3-pointers and the Nuggets averaging 12.1 3-pointers in the post season.

Even all the way back in the 2019 NBA Finals, Chipotle had their fun with another promotion. It didn’t have a clever name but it worked similar to their other promos. Back then, every time an announcer in the TV broadcast of the finals said “free” they’ll hand out 500 free burritos in the first half and then 100 free burritos during the second half of each game. They pretty much had the same mechanics of redeeming where they’ll put up a code on their Twitter profile and the first 500 or 1000 to text the correct code wins a free burrito.

More Than Just Free Throws

Chipotle has a knack for creating buzz-worthy promotions. In recent months, they’ve made headlines with several exciting campaigns:

  • Free Guac for Teachers: On May 2, 2023, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Chipotle gave away free guacamole to all teachers with a valid school ID. This gesture of appreciation for educators was a slam dunk with fans.
  • National Burrito Day Extravaganza: Chipotle loves a good celebration, and National Burrito Day is no exception. In April 2023, they offered BOGO (buy one, get one free) deals on burritos, bringing smiles (and full stomachs) to fans across the country.

They also had one of the biggest viral moments in fast food back in 2022. In Halloween of that year, Chipotle released their “Boorito” costumes on BeReal. This innovative campaign, encouraging fans to share photos of themselves in Chipotle-themed costumes, took social media by storm and solidified their status as a brand that knows how to engage with its audience.

From The Club

The NBA Finals is finally upon us! And what better way to enjoy the finals than with some free food courtesy of Chipotle? I’m excited to see how Luka will work his magic against the best team in the league and I’m sure going to enjoy it more with a meal from Chipotle in hand. I can’t wait to see the on-court drama too since this is Kyrie going up against his former team (and basically the entire city of Boston) in the biggest stage of the NBA. Personally, I want the Mavs to win but if Chipotle is handing out free food, aren’t we all the real winners here?
