With over 18,000 locations around the globe, it’s safe to say that Pizza Hut really know what they’re doing when it comes to pizza. So when they announce a new kind of pizza is being added to their menu, you know that people are going to pay attention.
Pizza Hut recently unveiled their latest menu innovation: Chicago Tavern-style Pizza. Plus, for the first time in over a decade, Pizza Hut is also making a major overhaul to their available toppings. This is a pretty significant milestone since they’ll actually be the first global pizza chain that offers Tavern-style Pizza and new toppings like Chicken Sausage, Pesto Swirl, and Spicy Sauce permanently.
Tavern-style Pizza dates back to 1930s Chicago where it became a staple in taverns where it was often served free to keep patrons around longer. It’s characterized by its crispy thin crust and square-cut slices, making it a favorite for gatherings. This move by Pizza Hut is looking like a guaranteed hit. There are four variations you can enjoy this new pizza in: Pesto Margherita, The Ultimate, Spicy Chicken Sausage, and Double Pepperoni. Let’s take a look at each of them.
- Pesto Margherita Tavern Pizza: Sweet marinara, grape tomatoes, garlic, basil pesto, and parmesan-oregano seasoning on Thin ‘N Crispy crust.
- The Ultimate Tavern Pizza: Sausage, pepperoni, fire roasted peppers, onions, grape tomatoes, and parmesan-oregano seasoning on Thin ‘N Crispy crust.
- Spicy Chicken Sausage Tavern Pizza: Spicy marinara, chicken sausage, fire roasted peppers, caramelized onions, and parmesan-oregano seasoning on Thin ‘N Crispy crust.
- Double Pepperoni Tavern Pizza: Sweet marinara, classic pepperoni, crispy cupped pepperoni, and parmesan-oregano seasoning on Thin ‘N Crispy crust.
Along with this new pizza, Pizza Hut is also debuting eight new toppings and sauces: Spicy Marinara Sauce, Pesto Sauce Swirl, Chicken Sausage, Fresh Diced Garlic, Grape Tomatoes, Caramelized Onions, Fire Roasted Peppers, and Crispy Cupped Pepperoni. The best part is that these aren’t just limited on the new Chicago Tavern-style Pizza; you can select them for other custom made orders.

What Exactly is Tavern-style Pizza?
Tavern-style Pizza is a type of pizza characterized by it’s thin-crust that originated in Chicago’s taverns back in the 1920s and 1930s. It was often given away as a complementary dish to keep patrons around longer and encourage more drinking. Unlike the deep dish pizza, which Chicago is also known for, the tavern-style pizza’s crust was super thin and crispy with an almost cracker-like consistency. It’s sturdy enough to hold generous amounts of sauce and toppings and is traditionally cut into square which made it easy to pass around.
Interestingly, despite Chicago being basically synonymous with deep dish pizza, locals actually seem to favor the tavern-style pizza more. Certain studies show that thin-crust pizza actually outsells deep dish pizza by a significant margin. You can actually see the appeal since it does add an interesting texture thanks to the thin crust’s signature crunch.

They’re always cooking up something new at Pizza Hut and this year alone, saw many new deals and interesting new menu items. The two biggest ones has to be Big New Yorker Pizza Bagel and the My Hut Box.
Big New Yorker Pizza Bagel
Ever wondered what would happen when you combine a pizza with a bagel? Well, wonder no more because Pizza Hut made it happen when they collaborated with famous bagel food truck, the Yeastie Boys. It’s made with sweet marinara sauce, fresh Parmesan cheese, oregano, and double pepperoni packed into a Yeastie Boys bagel.
My Hut Box
Pizza Hut also recently came out with an exciting meal deal for us to enjoy a combo of our favorite items. The My Hut Box has several options to choose from that includes the Personal Pan Pizza, the Pizza Hut Melt, and the Half Melt. You can also choose a side of either fries or boneless wings to go with your meal. It’s very affordable too with prices starting at $6.99 and you can add $1.50 for a 20-ounce beverage.

I absolutely love pizza. I’m not really particular where it’s from as long as it tastes good and has a ton of cheese. That said, I’d still claim that Pizza Hut is one of the best pizza places in the world. I mean, what’s not to love? They are always at the forefront of innovation when it comes to pizzas.
