A Delicious Trio Arrives: The Schlotzsky’s Italian Pesto Trio
Get ready to taste Italy with Schlotzsky’s latest menu addition – the Italian Pesto Trio! This isn’t just one sandwich; it’s a trio of delicious options, each featuring a unique flavor profile built around pesto, a classic Italian sauce made with basil, pine nuts, and olive oil. Here’s a closer look at each sandwich in the trio:
- Turkey Capri: This sandwich combines sliced turkey with fresh mozzarella cheese, a drizzle of balsamic glaze, and of course, the star of the show – pesto. All nestled on Schlotzsky’s toasted Artisan Ciabatta bread.
- Genoa Chicken: This option features layers of Genoa salami, roasted chicken breast, provolone cheese, marinated olives, and a touch of red onion, all brought together by the delicious pesto. Served on Schlotzsky’s fresh-from-scratch sourdough bun.
- Green Goddess: This vegetarian option is packed with flavor. It features a combination of avocado, cucumber, green onion, and a creamy Green Goddess dressing, all complemented by the pesto’s herbaceous notes. Served on toasted sourdough bread.

Beyond the Trio: Exploring the World of Pesto
Pesto is a versatile sauce that can be used in various ways beyond sandwiches. Here are some fun facts about pesto:
- Origin Story: Pesto’s origins can be traced back to the Liguria region in northern Italy. It was traditionally made with a mortar and pestle, hence the name “pesto” which translates to “crushed” in Italian.
- More Than Basil: While basil is the key ingredient in classic pesto, there are many variations. Some recipes include additional herbs like parsley or mint. You can also find pesto made with different nuts, such as walnuts or almonds.
- Pesto Power: Pesto isn’t just delicious; it’s also packed with healthy ingredients. Basil is a good source of vitamins and antioxidants, while nuts add healthy fats and protein.
