- Stand Mixer
- Oven
- Baking Sheet
- Pastry Brush
- 1.25 cups warm milk (105-110 degrees F)
- 1 third cup granulated sugar
- 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 0.25 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3.5 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)
Preparation
- 1. Warm up the milk until it reaches a temperature between 105-110 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2. Mix the warm milk with a bit of sugar in a bowl.
- 3. Sprinkle the yeast over this mixture and let it stand for about 5 minutes or until it becomes foamy. This step activates the yeast.
- 4. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, pour in the activated yeast mixture.
- 5. Add softened butter, an egg, salt, and about two cups of flour to the bowl.
- 6. Start the mixer on a medium setting, allowing the ingredients to form a smooth batter.
Cooking / Creating
- 1. Gradually incorporate the remaining flour into the bowl while the mixer is running.
- 2. Once you get a soft dough, increase to a higher speed and let the dough hook knead for 2-3 minutes.
- 3. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour until it’s just tacky to the touch.
- 4. Place the dough into a greased bowl, turning it once to coat in oil.
- 5. Cover the bowl with a dishtowel and set it in a warm place to rise until it’s doubled, which should take about 45-60 minutes.
- 6. After the dough has risen, punch it down gently and allow it to rest for a few minutes.
- 7. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare your baking sheets.
- 8. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out into a 12×8 inch rectangle at about ½ inch thickness.
- 9. Cut the rectangle into roughly 24 to 30 squares.
- 10. Place the squares onto the prepared baking sheets, cover with a dish towel, and let them rise again until doubled, which will take another 45-60 minutes.
Serving / Presentation
Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they turn a lovely golden brown.
