In an era of rising food costs and shrinkflation, shoppers are always looking for ways to stretch their grocery budget. Of course, some items are a definite must-buy, but others offer poor value for money with their high markups and cheaper alternatives. Today, we’re getting real with you by sharing the most overpriced grocery items and how you can save without sacrificing quality.

11. Pre-Cut Produce

We’re talking about the pre-cut produce that is packed in the produce section. Since they come with a hefty convenience tax, they’re marked up by 40% or more. Some items even have a staggering 1,200% price hack. Instead of grabbing those pre-cut packs, you can save money and reduce plastic waste by chopping your own fruits and veggies. Not to mention, you’ll get more.

10. Bottled Water

We’re talking about massive waste here. Not to mention, their markups alone are up to 4,000% over tap water. Bottled water is often no safer than tap water and contributes to the plastic pollution problem. Just make a switch to a reusable bottle and a faucet filter to save money and, of course, the planet.

9. Name-Brand Spices

Never ever pay double for name-brand spices. Generic versions are identical in quality and cost up to 100% less. If you can, buy in bulk from specialty stores and get only what you need to ensure freshness and add more to your savings.

8. Pre-Marinated Meats

Yup, we’re talking about those pre-marinated meats packed in the meat section. They come with a 60% markup and often hide imperfections like discoloration. Why not marinate meat in your own kitchen? It’s more affordable and, not to mention, tastes much better than those from the store, as you can customize the sauces according to your liking.

7. Baked Goods

There’s a reason why the grocery store’s baked goods are tempting. It’s because they hide a 60% profit margin with their freshly baked goods. They can cost three times more than what you can create in your own kitchen. Opt for day-old items for a discount, or better yet, buy the ingredients and make your own at home. You can even control the ingredients, plus a batch that you can save up for later.

6. Organic Produce

You don’t actually need organic fruits and vegetables, as many of them feature a hard shell that you won’t even consume. They also carry a 20% markup that’s not worth it at all. Instead, be selective by buying organic for high-pesticide items and conventional for the low-pesticide ones. Consult the internet to guide you before going on a trip to the grocery store.

5. Premade Smoothies and Juices

Premade juices and smoothies are just overpriced convenience drinks. If you’re not in a convenience store or gas station store, then there’s no point in grabbing pre-made drinks. Why not make your own at home for only a fraction of the cost? You’ll have a much fresher and nutritious drink by just buying frozen fruit in bulk.

4. Individually Wrapped Cheese

Pre-packaged charcuterie boards are a rip-off if you think about it. A small kit can cost $20, while buying the cheese, meat, and crackers separately gives you more for your money. Skip the convenience and assemble your own board.

3. Bottled and Specialty Coffee

If you’re still buying your coffee in a daily bottle, then it unknowingly costs you extra money. A single bottle can cost $3.50, compared to a $10 bag of ground coffee, which makes many servings. Instead, brew at home to save money and customize your coffee just the way you like it.

2. Trendy Superfoods

Those trendy ‘superfoods’ labeled in your groceries seem suspicious. Sure, you’ve seen them on Instagram as an emerging superfood, but are they really? We’re talking about goji berries and collagen powders that come with big claims with even bigger price tags. If we look at its scientific basis, they’re unproven. A balanced diet of fruits and vegetables is a wiser and cheaper choice.

1. Fresh Seafood

That ‘fresh’ seafood counter is a big scam. Why? Most of those fish were previously frozen and sold at a premium for a price that will make you believe they came from the underwater Atlantis. Instead, buy directly from the frozen section and save 35-40% for a product with much better quality.
