Food is essential to our well-being, but as we age, what we eat—and how much—matters more than ever. Making wise dietary choices, especially after 40, becomes crucial for maintaining good health and preventing disease. This list reveals 12 foods you should start avoiding to support healthy aging and keep your body thriving through the years.

12. Caffeine

We get it; caffeine has been a part of your system through the years. However, it’s one of the consumables you must run away from as you age. Why? Well, they increase anxiety and make your heart beat irregularly, which is dangerous in your age, especially for those with heart conditions. Note that caffeine isn’t only found in coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate, and even medication.

11. Veggie Chips

While you may think Veggie Chips are better than potato chips, we’re here to tell you no. They are very similar to the chips that you see in groceries. Standard veggie chips use the same oils as those popular ones, not to mention their fat content. Consider low-fat snacks instead, or if you like them, exercise portion control by only consuming 14 pieces.

10. Grapefruit

This may surprise us as we grow older, knowing that fruits are the better option. However, if you’re taking certain medications for high blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety, then avoid this fruit at all costs. This is because grapefruit might intensify the effects of the medicine you’re taking, which is dangerous to your health.

9. High-Sodium Foods

High-sodium foods aren’t a surprise since they’re really considered unhealthy even when you’re young. Excessive salt may worsen your high blood pressure. It may even lead to stroke or heart failure, or even bone loss due to calcium depletion. With this, you must completely cut out high-sodium foods like canned soups, salty snacks, and frozen foods like a microwaveable meal.

8. Processed Meats

Speaking of sodium, your usual fridge fillers of hot dogs, sausages, and bacon are the foods that you must drop. They’re considered processed meat, which is also loaded with nitrates and preservatives, both associated with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. As you age, processed meats are harder to digest since they’re high in fat. Instead, consider grilled chicken or tofu when you’re craving bacon.

7. Raw or Undercooked Foods

If you love sushi or sashimi, then you might be disappointed that they’re included in the foods you must avoid. As you and your body get older, you become susceptible to foodborne illnesses due to your weakened immune system. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

6. High-Mercury Fish

While it’s good to add fish to your diet, one may not be like the others. Certain large fish, such as swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, contain high levels of mercury. As you age, you should limit these fish and choose lower-mercury options available in the market. You can opt for fish like salmon, sardines, and cod instead.

5. Trans Fats

By trans fat, we mean margarine used in baked goods like cookies and cake. While they’re a comfort food for many, they’re not exactly the comfort that your body needs as you age. They’re harmful to heart health as they raise bad cholesterol (LDL). Meanwhile, trans fat lowers the good cholesterol (HDL) left in your body.

4. Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates translate to the usual commercial breads that you see in the market. They lack fiber and essential nutrients, much like waffles, bagels, and pizza dough. These bad carbohydrates cause your blood sugar to spike and promote inflammation in your body. You’ll observe that over time, the effects will eventually lead to chronic and cardiovascular diseases.

3. Almond Milk

It’s not surprising that old people think that avoiding dairy might benefit their health. With this, you’ll always opt for a replacement milk, with almond being the most common. This myth is wrong, as dairy products actually help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis. Opt for milk with fortified calcium and vitamin D. Note that almond milk won’t give you the nutrients you’ll get from regular milk.

2. Pasta

It’s time to say goodbye to pasta, as it goes under the category of refined and processed carbs. With pasta, you’ll get a high carb load and blood sugar spikes, which may contribute to the risk of heart disease. They won’t do any favors to aging skin, and they will show the effects of its unhealthiness through bad skin.

1. Fried Foods

Admit it; fried foods are your guilty pleasure. Don’t worry, as you’re not alone on this one. However, when you reach your prime age, you should cut them down from your diet as they are a combination of unhealthy trans fat and saturated fats from the oil, which have been used several times, or the food is kept at high temperatures.
