Why We Celebrate National Biscuit Month
Food holidays and celebrations may either be a marketing strategy of fast food restaurants for deals like National French Fries Day, or they share a deep importance towards a certain place like Georgia’s Peach Cobbler Day. For National Biscuit Month, it’s actually unknown how biscuits are celebrated for the whole month of September. Still, it must be known why we celebrate it through its history and importance in Southern culture.
The history of America’s earliest known biscuits started from the Europeans who brought these snacks with them during long voyages at sea. Their flour, water, and salt ingredients make them less prone to food spoilage. By the time Europeans stepped foot on the New World or America, these treats became a part of their diet. The Southern colonies added life to these dried biscuits by adding wheat, buttermilk, and lard, which transformed them into a much more desirable treat.
It was around the 1800s when gravy was added to buttermilk cookies. There were times when there was a shortage of pork and dairy, so instead, they added gravy to soften these hard biscuits. And that’s how biscuits and gravy were popularized across the USA, where we get to enjoy these comfort meals and even dedicate a whole month just to celebrate it.

I have never tasted a biscuit smothered in gravy because I don’t like gravy at all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m starting to open up to the idea of gravy on food, but my liking depends on the taste of the gravy. 😅 Well, it looks like The Big Biscuit will make me try my first Biscuit and Gravy Bundle!
