Trader Joe's Makes Its First Huge Update in Over 20 Years

A Big Change Is Coming to Trader Joe’s for the First Time in More Than 20 Years

Trader Joe’s has always been known for its unique items and the way it sells its goods. Take bananas for example—they’ve been sold individually there for over 20 years!

A little background: about two decades ago, the previous CEO of Trader Joe’s found out from a customer that people might prefer to buy single bananas rather than a bunch. So, they started selling them individually. This was a hit, as customers could grab a banana for a snack or to add to a smoothie without having to buy more than they needed.

The price for one banana was 19 cents for a long time. But now, that’s changed.

Trader Joe’s Raised Its Banana Prices

Yes, the cost of a banana at Trader Joe’s has gone up. Now, a single banana costs 23 cents, which is about 20% more than before. A representative from the store explained that they only adjust prices when their own costs go up. They’ve managed to keep the 19-cent price for so long but now they had to make the change.

Bananas are usually budget-friendly and are popular because of their low price, as mentioned in a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2023.

More Trader Joe’s Pricing Changes

Even though bananas are now a bit more expensive, some good news is that Trader Joe’s has been able to lower the prices on other items thanks to better cost negotiations. Here are a few updates:

  • Raw Almonds are now $3.99 a pound, which is $1 less.
  • Romaine Hearts have dropped to $2.99, saving you 50 cents.
  • Organic Tri-Color Bell Peppers have been reduced by 50 cents to $4.49.
  • Green Onions are selling for 99 cents, the lowest they’ve been in at least ten years.

So, while the banana price has gone up, you can still find some good deals in the produce section on your next trip to Trader Joe’s.
