8 Minnesota Mexican Restaurants Locals Say Are Worth Every Mile of the Drive

Minnesota might be famous for hotdish and lake cabins, but its Mexican food scene deserves a lot more attention. From a longtime favorite on St. Paul’s West Side to a busy college-town spot in Mankato, the state is full of family-owned kitchens serving real, satisfying plates.

This list covers eight of them, spread across big cities, river towns, and quiet suburbs. Some are perfect for a weekend brunch, others for a fast taco run, and a few are ideal when you want a big table and bigger portions.

Each one earned its spot for a different reason, whether it is a signature dish, a breakfast menu, a patio, or a long history in its neighborhood. Save this one for your next road trip or Friday night craving, and maybe send it to the friend who always asks where to eat.

1. Boca Chica | Restaurante Mexicano y Cantina, St Paul, MN

Cesar Chavez Street on St. Paul’s West Side has a long Mexican American history, and Boca Chica sits right in the middle of it at 11 Cesar Chavez St. The family-owned restaurant has been a dependable neighborhood stop for years, with some households treating it as a monthly tradition going back to at least 2003.

The dining room has a hacienda-style look with a fireplace, which adds a historic, comfortable touch. There is also outdoor seating, a private dining room, and live music at times.

The menu is big. Highlights include Guillermo’s Enchiladas de Carne, Los Dos Amigos Sopes, street tacos, fresh guacamole, chile rellenos, and a bowl of Sopa Fideo.

Save room for the Ay Caramba Sundae.

I would plan a Sunday visit here, since the doors open at 10 AM and brunch is part of the lineup. Just know Sunday afternoon is the busiest stretch, so reservations help.

Vegetarians get a full menu, and kids have their own too.

2. Rancho Viejo Mexican Grill, Alexandria, MN

Lake country has a new reason to stop the car. Rancho Viejo Mexican Grill, at 303 30th Ave W in Alexandria, is a family-owned spot known for traditional dishes and complimentary chips and salsa on the table.

Fajitas lead the show. The Fajitas Mazatlan and Enchiladas Fajitas are two strong picks, and shrimp fans can go for Tacos Camaron or the Pescado Al Chipotle.

Craving something slow-cooked? The Chile Colorado and Carnitas Jalisco bring heartier flavors, while birria tacos and fish tacos round out the taco side of the menu.

Prices land around $10 to $20 per person, which makes it easy for a group after a day on the water. The service is quick and friendly, and there is even a drive-through for anyone in a hurry.

It stays open until 10 PM Monday through Saturday, and parking is free.

3. Rancho Loco Grill & Bar, Red Wing, MN

Free chips and salsa are standard. Free hot bean dip alongside them is a nice upgrade, and Rancho Loco Grill & Bar in Red Wing serves both.

You will find it at 240 Harrison St, an easy stop for anyone exploring this Mississippi River town. The family-owned restaurant is all about fresh food and large portions.

Big appetites should eye the Burrito Gordo or the Fajitas Texanas. For a little heat, the Filete A la Diabla is a bolder choice, and the chicken taco salad is a lighter pick that still fills you up.

Spice lovers get a bonus here. A large selection of hot sauces lets you adjust each bite to your own comfort level.

The place also works for sports nights, with TVs and a casual setup. Outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, a kids’ menu, and a full vegetarian menu make it flexible for just about any crowd.

Note that it offers takeout but no delivery.

4. Dominguez Family Restaurant | Mexican, Minneapolis, MN

The family name is right on the sign, and that tells you plenty. Dominguez Family Restaurant at 3313 E 50th St in south Minneapolis is a family-run neighborhood spot with a colorful, casual dining room.

Combo platters are the main draw, and they come in generous sizes. The mole enchiladas and fish tacos stand out, while carne asada, chicken fajitas, and a chicken chimichanga with queso cover the classics.

Start with chips, salsa, and cheese dip. It is a simple move, but it sets the tone.

Timing matters here. The restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays, opens at noon Tuesday through Saturday, and closes at 8 PM most weeknights and 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

I like this one for a relaxed weekday lunch, since afternoons tend to be quieter. Families get high chairs and a kids’ menu, and dogs are welcome on the outdoor seating.

5. Las Enchiladas | Authentic Mexican Restaurant, Farmington, MN

With a name like Las Enchiladas, you already know the house specialty. This family-owned restaurant at 18500 Pilot Knob Rd in Farmington keeps its focus on enchiladas, tacos, and other authentic dishes.

The menu is on the smaller side, which is a plus when you hate long decisions. The Enfrijoladas, a bean enchilada dish, is a standout vegetarian option.

Plant-based diners have it especially good. Las Enchiladas offers both a full vegan menu and a full vegetarian menu, along with some organic dishes.

Dessert is a no-brainer: churros with ice cream. It is a classic finish that works for kids and adults alike.

Families will notice the practical touches, including high chairs, changing tables, and a kids’ menu. Dogs are allowed, there is outdoor seating, and the hours run late on Fridays and Saturdays, until midnight.

Weekend evenings get busy, so a reservation is smart.

6. Pancho’s Taqueria and Mexican Cafe, Circle Pines, MN

Breakfast tacos at 8 AM in the north metro. That is the reason to know about Pancho’s Taqueria and Mexican Cafe at 4115 Woodland Rd in Circle Pines.

The small, family-run spot makes its tacos from scratch and serves traditional breakfast dishes every morning. Soft tortillas and homemade chips are part of the appeal.

Later in the day, the menu shifts into taqueria mode. Al pastor, carnitas, and birria tacos are top choices, and the quesabirria is a crowd favorite.

A tamale platter and elote are also on hand.

Not into meat? The veggie tacos with rice and beans are vegan, and the crunchwrap comes in a vegetarian version.

Both vegan and vegetarian menus are available.

Wash it all down with a horchata. Service moves fast, prices sit around $10 to $20, and there is free Wi-Fi plus outdoor seating if you want to linger.

7. Don Papi Chulo, Inver Grove Heights, MN

Some places do one thing really well. At Don Papi Chulo, that thing is tacos stuffed with flavorful meat.

The family-owned restaurant sits at 7834 Cahill Ave E in Inver Grove Heights. It runs on counter service, so it suits a quick lunch or a takeout order on the way home.

The Birria Taco Combo is the headliner, and the quesabirria tacos come loaded with juicy filling. Asada street tacos, tortas, sopes, burritos, and tamales fill out the rest of the menu.

A selection of aguas frescas adds a refreshing side, with mango among the options. The salsas are another highlight.

Plan around the schedule. It is closed Mondays, opens at 10:30 AM on Fridays through Sundays for breakfast, and closes by 8 PM most days.

No reservations are taken, but free parking makes popping in easy.

8. El Mazatlán | Mexican Restaurant, Mankato, MN

Ask a Minnesota State Mankato graduate where they ate as a student, and El Mazatlán may come up. The restaurant has served the Mankato area since 2003, and its mix of good food and fair prices has kept it popular with college students for years.

Find it at 1525 Tullamore St. Inside, the room is colorful and festive, and a seasonal patio opens up for warmer months.

Carne asada is a favorite, served in generous portions. The steak chimichanga, shrimp cocktail, and street tacos are strong picks too, and vegetarians can order fajitas or the Cancun Burrito.

Do not skip the cheese dip at the start or the fried ice cream at the end.

It is a lively place, with live music at times and a good setup for watching games. Families get high chairs and a kids’ menu, and dogs are welcome inside and out.

Evenings from Tuesday through Saturday fill up fast, so reservations are a good idea. Few restaurants on this list cover as many bases in one stop.
