Minnesota might be famous for hotdish and walleye, but the state hides some seriously good barbecue in its smaller towns. From lakeside villages up north to river communities in the south, these counter-serve shops and smokehouses have built loyal followings one brisket sandwich at a time.
Each spot on this list does something a little different, whether it is a butcher counter, fall-off-the-bone ribs, or award-winning sauce. If you love smoked meats and short road trips, these nine places are worth knowing about.
Save this list for the next time hunger and highway miles line up.
1. Smokin’ Mortars BBQ & Meat Market, Isle, MN

Part barbecue joint, part butcher shop, this Isle spot lets you eat lunch and grab meat to take home in one stop. The counter serves pulled pork sandwiches, pub burgers, and smoked meats, while the market side stocks thick-cut bacon, spicy beef sticks, and jerky.
The ribs get plenty of attention, and the homemade barbecue sauce shows up on plenty of plates. Regulars also reach for the chicken wild rice soup and the horseradish pickles, which is about as Minnesota as a barbecue menu gets.
Sitting on State Highway 47 in a town of about 800 people along Mille Lacs Lake, it stays casual and quiet. Hours run Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM and Sunday until 2 PM, with plenty of free parking.
Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings are the busiest stretches if you want to plan around a crowd.
2. Smokey Jake’s BBQ, Aitkin, MN

Ribs are the headline act at this Aitkin favorite, cut with a flavorful dry rub and paired with a lineup of barbecue sauces. A half rack with spicy sauce is an easy call, though the brisket sandwich holds its own too.
The menu spreads beyond the smoker with nachos, corn bread, and garlic parmesan fries for anyone who wants something on the side. The dining room stays clean and roomy, and the folks at the register are known for helping you dial in sauces and recommendations.
You will find it at 12 2nd St NW in Aitkin, a traditional county-seat town of around 2,100 people. Hours shift through the week, opening as early as 8 AM some days and closing by 6:30 or 7 PM later in the week, with Monday and Sunday closed.
It works well for both an early lunch and a sit-down dinner.
3. Neighbor’s BBQ, Tower, MN

Confidence in your smoked meat looks like not handing out sauce on the first visit, and that reputation follows Neighbor’s BBQ. The meat is built to stand on its own, though you can still get a bottle of sauce alongside your plate.
Ribs, brisket, and pulled pork anchor the menu, with sides like beans and coleslaw rounding things out. There is a dining area with a comfortable feel, a bar onsite, and even a kids’ menu, so it suits a range of appetites.
The restaurant sits at 6699 MN-169 in Tower, a historic Lake Vermilion Iron Range town of roughly 500 people. Hours run Wednesday through Friday from 2 to 10 PM and weekends starting at noon, with Monday and Tuesday closed.
Dogs are welcome, and there is usually plenty of parking.
4. Butts and Buns BBQ, Hackensack, MN

One clever menu idea here is the pork parfait, which layers smoked pulled pork and barbecue sauce with coleslaw in a cup that fits a car cup holder. That kind of thinking tells you this place understands its lake-country road trippers.
Beyond that, the ribs come well smoked with a thick, flavorful sauce, and the beef brisket sandwich arrives with provolone. Smoked salmon is a less common find at a barbecue stop, and the cornbread muffins round out the plate.
Look for it along Highway 371 in Hackensack, a small Northwoods resort community of around 300 residents. Hours are limited, running Wednesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM and Friday and Saturday until 7 PM, with Sunday through Tuesday closed.
Plan around those windows and you are set.
5. Hudson Smokehouse, Ironton, MN

Mountain bikers rolling through the Cuyuna Lakes trails have made this one a natural refuel stop, thanks to its bike-friendly vibe. It leans a bit more full-service than a typical counter shop, with table service, a fireplace, and live music on the calendar.
The smoker turns out brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and even smoked meatloaf, plus sides like baked beans, mac and cheese, and potato salad. A prime rib sandwich gives the menu something a little different from the usual lineup.
You will find it at 208 Curtis Ave in Ironton, an old Iron Range mining town of about 570 people in the Cuyuna area. Open Wednesday through Sunday with evening hours later in the week, it draws its biggest crowds on Saturday afternoons and evenings.
There is a bar onsite and free parking nearby.
6. Fozzie’s Smokin Bar BQ, Bemidji, MN

Portion size is a genuine talking point at this downtown Bemidji spot, where plates come stacked and creative. The menu goes well past the basics with items like Mac and Cheese Egg Rolls, a BBQ Sundae, Monster Tots, and the Not Your Grandma’s Alfredo.
Of course the core barbecue is here too, with juicy pulled pork, brisket, and ribs alongside classic sides like coleslaw, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. The dark-painted dining room and rustic bar give it a laid-back, trendy feel.
Set at 114 3rd St NW in Bemidji, a Northwoods lake town of around 15,000, it is open Monday through Saturday with Sunday closed. It accepts reservations, offers free wi-fi, and welcomes families and groups.
Friday and Saturday evenings run busiest, so budget extra time when the room fills up.
7. BoB-a-Q Smokehouse & Grill, Two Harbors, MN

What started in 2021 as a food trailer with a passion for authentic smoked meats has grown into a Two Harbors fixture on the North Shore. Years of festivals across the Northland helped build the following before it settled into a home base.
The brisket gets stacked on fresh buns with house barbecue sauces, and the brisket bowl and racks of ribs are popular orders. Sides like the flavorful beans carry their weight, and prices stay reasonable for the portions.
The address is 502 7th Ave in Two Harbors, a Lake Superior port and railroad town of around 3,600 people. It is open every day from 11:30 AM, closing between 6 and 8 PM depending on the day.
There is a drive-through and curbside pickup, dogs are welcome, but note there is no restroom onsite.
8. Smoke, Lonsdale, MN

Named simply and to the point, this Lonsdale smokehouse pairs its meats with a large craft beer lineup. The signature Big Lonsdale sandwich piles on shaved prime rib, cheese, and a barbecue sauce built to match it.
The kitchen smokes all its meat in house, turning out wings, fall-off-the-bone ribs, brisket, chicken, and pork tenderloin. Menu extras keep things interesting, from Pork Belly Burnt Ends and Tater Tots Confit to a rotating cheesecake and a big brownie for dessert.
Find it at 115 SW Railway St in Lonsdale, a Rice County town of around 4,000 in Minnesota’s farm country. It is open Tuesday through Sunday with Monday closed, later hours on Friday and Saturday, and it accepts reservations.
There is a bar onsite, a kids’ menu, and a changing table, so it handles a full family crowd.
9. Piggy Blue’s Bar-B-Que, Austin, MN

Award-winning sauces and playful decor give this Austin spot a personality all its own. The combination platter lets you mix ribs, brisket, and shredded pork, which is the smart move if you cannot decide.
A variety of sauces means everyone at the table can dial in their own flavor, and the sides pull their weight. Regulars order up baked beans, coleslaw, pit fries, and cornbread with melted butter, and the Smokin’ BBQ Platter and Smoky Smorgasbord are built for bigger appetites.
The restaurant sits at 323 Main St N in Austin, a southern Minnesota river community of about 26,000 people. Hours run Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM, with Sunday and Monday closed.
Parking on Main Street can be a little tight, so leave a minute to circle the block.
