Indiana has two big Amish areas, one up north around Elkhart and LaGrange counties and another down south near Daviess County. Both share a dinner habit that is hard to beat: crispy fried chicken next to a pile of real mashed potatoes and gravy.
The six restaurants below serve that classic plate in very different ways, from a giant dining hall to a small country buffet that closes before supper most days. Save this list for your next road trip, because a few of these spots keep hours that can surprise first-timers.
1. Das Dutchman Essenhaus, Middlebury, IN

Indiana’s largest restaurant sits right on US-20 in Middlebury, in the middle of an Amish and Mennonite community. Size is part of the fun here, with shops and a bakery sharing the grounds with the dining rooms.
Dinner leans hard into stick-to-your-ribs cooking. Tender fried and broasted chicken, creamy mashed potatoes, and homemade noodles are the trio most people come for, and the family-style and all-you-can-eat options make it easy to try all three.
Creamed chicken over biscuits is another house classic. The pies are what the place is best known for, so leave room, and the donuts have a following of their own.
A salad bar, a full vegetarian menu, and a kids’ menu round things out. Hours run Monday through Saturday from 6:30 AM to 8 PM, and it is closed Sundays.
Saturday afternoons and evenings draw the biggest crowds, so a weekday visit is the calmer move.
2. Tiffany’s Family Restaurant, LaGrange, IN

Budget-minded chicken fans, this one is for you. Most meals at this LaGrange diner land in the $10 to $20 range, which feels almost old-fashioned for a full buffet.
The broasted chicken is the star, with crunchy skin and juicy meat. Fried chicken shows up too, and the dinner bar carries real mashed potatoes, chicken and noodles, stuffing, and hillbilly beans.
I like this stop for its no-fuss style. It is a cozy, quiet room in rural LaGrange County with a salad bar, homemade pie, and soft-serve ice cream for the finish.
Breakfast is served as well, starting at 6 AM Monday through Saturday, with closing at 8 PM. Reservations are not accepted, and Friday evenings and Saturdays get busy.
Sundays it is closed.
3. Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery, Shipshewana, IN

Shopping in Shipshewana tends to end at the same place: a table at the Blue Gate. The family-owned country kitchen and bakery sits alongside an Amish crafts marketplace on Van Buren Street, so a meal fits neatly into a day of browsing.
The family-style spread is the big draw. Think fresh salads, roast beef, ham, fried chicken, noodles, mashed potatoes, vegetables, dressing, gravy, and pie with ice cream.
Platters work for smaller appetites, with homestyle fried chicken, meatloaf, and pot roast on the menu. The bakery side handles rolls, cookies, apple butter, and pies like blueberry, cherry, and lemon meringue.
Expect a wait, especially Saturday afternoons. Weekday hours start at 10:30 AM, Saturday opens at 7 AM, and it is closed Sundays.
4. Gasthof Amish Village, Montgomery, IN

Southern Indiana has its own Amish settlement in Daviess County, and Gasthof sits right on the farmland there. The kitchen serves traditional Amish cooking in a buffet setup, with an antique shop and gift shop nearby for after the meal.
Variety is the headline. Fried chicken shares the line with roast beef, roast pork, meatloaf, catfish fiddlers, fried fish, and shrimp, plus homemade mashed potatoes, noodles, gravy, green beans, and fresh bread.
Fried sweet potatoes and cobbler are fun extras, and a separate salad bar carries the cole slaw.
Unlike several spots on this list, Gasthof opens Sundays from 10:30 AM to 3 PM, which also happens to be its busiest stretch. Friday and Saturday run until 9 PM, and reservations are accepted for groups planning ahead.
5. Dutchman’s Diner, Odon, IN

Timing matters at this Odon diner. Friday is the only day it stays open until 8 PM, so anyone chasing a true fried chicken dinner should plan around that.
The other days run on breakfast and lunch hours, closing at 1:30 PM Tuesday through Thursday and 3 PM on Saturday. Mondays and Sundays it is closed.
The buffet is medium-sized with a salad bar, and it delivers the basics well: crispy chicken, creamy mashed potatoes with white gravy, green beans, and desserts. Fridays add seafood to the lineup.
Prices stay in the $10 to $20 range, and the setting is scenic farm country in Daviess County’s Amish community. Curbside pickup and takeout are available, and reservations are accepted.
6. Schwartz Family Restaurant, Eckerty, IN

Eckerty is a tiny dot on the map in Crawford County, which makes a full Amish-style spread here a pleasant surprise. The cafeteria-style setup lets diners pick exactly what lands on the tray.
Fried chicken and freshly made mashed potatoes lead the way. Meatloaf, Salisbury steak, chili, bread, and a dressing with a chicken-soup flavor fill out the line, along with well-seasoned green beans.
Side fans have plenty to pick from too. Broccoli and cauliflower casserole, baked beans, beef and vegetable soup, and a self-serve salad bar all show up on the menu.
A fireplace and outdoor seating add some charm, and dogs are welcome outside. Hours are 11 AM to 8 PM Tuesday through Saturday and 10 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, with no reservations taken.
