Lately, people have been talking a lot about a special kind of milk – raw milk, and the things made from it. In the United States, some people get sick, and it seems that raw milk might be part of the reason.
Now, there are rules about selling raw milk from one state to another. The law says you can’t do that, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consents. A court also said this law was okay back in 2012.
But, Amos Miller wanted to sell raw milk in other states, even though a court in Pennsylvania told him he couldn’t sell without the right papers. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says he needs a license and permits, just like 114 other raw milk farms in the state have.
Right now, a judge named Thomas Sponaugle is looking at Mr. Miller’s situation. He says the problem here is the missing paperwork, not the raw milk itself. The judge says Mr. Miller can sell raw milk again as soon as he gets his licenses and permits sorted out.
Mr. Miller’s pretty worried, though. He says that if he can’t sell his milk outside Pennsylvania, both he and his customers are going to have a really hard time. His lawyer tried asking the judge to let him sell raw milk products again, but the judge said no.
To make things more interesting, the FDA recently warned people not to eat some raw cheese because it made people sick in several states. Eleven people got sick, five had to go to the hospital, and two had a really serious condition that can hurt their kidneys. Thankfully, nobody died.
It’s a hot topic for sure, and it’s important to stay informed about where your milk and cheese come from. Stay healthy, and keep an eye on this story as it unfolds!
Be safe and make sure everyone follows the rules.
