The turkey gets the spotlight, but the bakery box is what everyone remembers. Connecticut is full of long-running bakeries where grandparents once picked up the same cannoli, rolls, and pies that families still carry home today.
This list covers seven of them, from Italian pastry counters in New Haven and Hartford to orchard markets and a Portuguese bakery in Bridgeport. Each one has its own reason to earn a spot on your pre-holiday route, whether it is pignoli cookies, plate-sized coffee rolls, or apple pies straight from farm country.
Some open before sunrise, a few close one or two days a week, and several get packed on weekend mornings. Read through, save the hours, and plan your stops before the Wednesday rush hits.
Your dessert table will thank you.
1. Lucibello’s Italian Pastry Shop, New Haven, CT

Grand Avenue in New Haven has a bakery that looks like it skipped a few decades on purpose. Lucibello’s is a compact, simple shop focused on Italian pastries and cakes, and that old-school setup is a big part of its charm.
The cases hold the classics a holiday table needs. Think cannoli, rainbow cookies, pignoli cookies, and generously sized cakes made with rich creams and smooth chocolate.
I would save this one for the dessert you want people to ask about. A tray of rainbow cookies next to the pumpkin pie is a quiet flex.
This is strictly a grab-and-go stop, with no dine-in seating and no restroom. Coffee is available, and there is a free parking lot.
Plan around the schedule. The shop is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Sunday from 9 AM to 2 PM, and closed Tuesday.
Weekend afternoons get busy, so a Monday or Wednesday morning visit is the smoother move.
2. Mozzicato Depasquale Bakery and Pastry Shop, Hartford, CT

Long hours make holiday planning easier, and Mozzicato Depasquale is open every day from 7:30 AM to 8 PM. That alone puts it ahead of many bakeries when the Thanksgiving list keeps growing.
The shop sits on Franklin Avenue, Hartford’s well-known Italian corridor, and the Mozzicato family runs it with a clear Sicilian pastry focus. Traditional cannoli are the headliner.
The cake lineup is where this stop stands apart. Options include Italian Fresh Fruit Cake, Italian Rum Cake, Chocolate Mousse Cake, and a Cannoli Cake, plus layered cakes made with real whipped cream.
Want something smaller? Cappuccino slices, Napoleon slices, and pasticiotti fill the cases, and pignoli cookies come boxed by the pound.
It is more than sweets, too. Fresh rolls, breads, stuffed breads, and pizza make it easy to cover both dinner and dessert in one trip.
Free lot and street parking help, and there is a restroom and wi-fi. Thursday through Saturday evenings tend to be busiest.
3. Brooklyn Baking Company, Waterbury, CT

Some bakeries decorate with chalkboards. Brooklyn Baking Company decorates with its own history, displaying artifacts from a bakery that has been around for roughly a century.
The Waterbury shop on Reidville Drive keeps its shelves neatly stocked with sliced loaves and rolls, which is exactly what you want when stuffing or dinner rolls are on your to-do list. The Italian bread is a regular pick.
Morning visitors come for donuts and breakfast sandwiches, including a BLT. The pastry case adds cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other sweets.
The space is clean and orderly, with a homey, neighborhood feel that brings back memories of tagging along on family bakery runs.
Hours are Tuesday through Friday 7 AM to 6 PM and weekends 7 AM to 4 PM. It is closed Mondays, and weekend mornings are the busiest stretch, so weekday pickups go faster.
4. Neils Donuts, Wallingford, CT

A coffee roll about the size of a dinner plate is a solid reason to set an early alarm. Neils Donuts in Wallingford is known for portions and variety that go well beyond a basic dozen.
The menu covers donuts, pastries, cookies, pies, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. Chocolate glazed and cinnamon donuts are popular, and the everything bagels have a crisp crust with a soft middle.
Pies on the menu make this a handy Thanksgiving stop. Grab one for the table and a half dozen donuts for the people arriving early.
The shop itself is tiny, with counter service only and no restroom. Lines form, but they move quickly thanks to an efficient staff.
Timing matters here. Hours run Tuesday through Friday 6 AM to 3 PM, Saturday until 2 PM, and Sunday until 1 PM, with Mondays closed.
Weekday afternoons are the calmest window.
5. Oronoque Farms Gift & Bakery, Shelton, CT

Ask around Shelton about Thanksgiving pie and Oronoque Farms comes up fast. Many families have been picking up its homemade pies year after year.
The shop on Leavenworth Road combines a gift shop with a bakery. Pies are the main event, and cider donuts are a seasonal favorite that pairs well with fall visits.
Here is the fun twist. The shop also scoops homemade ice cream, including flavors inspired by its own pies, so pie and ice cream can come from the same counter.
In-store pickup is available, which helps if you plan to order ahead for the holiday. There is a free parking lot on site.
Note the afternoon schedule. Oronoque Farms is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 8 PM and closed Monday and Tuesday.
6. Lyman Orchards Apple Barrel Farm Market, Middlefield, CT

For a bakery run that doubles as a countryside drive, Middlefield delivers. Lyman Orchards grows nearly 100 types of seasonal fruit, and the Apple Barrel Farm Market is where much of it lands.
The market includes a bakery, and pies and donuts are its best-known items. Prepared foods, organic products, and fresh produce fill out the rest of the space.
This is a smart stop if you need more than dessert. Apples, produce, and a pie can all come home in one trip.
The larger property also offers pick-your-own fruit, corn mazes, and public golf, so families often make an outing of it. Seasonal activities change through the year, so check before going.
The market is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. Saturdays get crowded, while weekday evenings are quieter.
Parking, restrooms, and free wi-fi are available.
7. Chaves Bakery & Deli, Bridgeport, CT

Leftover turkey sandwiches deserve a better roll. Chaves Bakery and Deli in Bridgeport makes Portuguese rolls fresh, and they are the backbone of its sandwich menu.
This neighborhood spot on East Main Street mixes deli and bakery in a small space. Shelves and cases carry a wide variety of breads and desserts, including custard pies, danishes, and other pastries.
The house-made hamburger and hot dog buns are a step up from supermarket bags. Pick up extra rolls for the holiday weekend and you are set for the days after the big meal.
Prices are friendly, and so is the service. It is takeout only with no restroom, and there is a free parking lot.
Early birds benefit most. Chaves opens at 6 AM daily, closing at 6 PM Monday through Saturday and 4 PM on Sunday.
Weekend mornings and Fridays are the busiest times.
From cannoli to cider donuts to Portuguese rolls, these seven bakeries show how many traditions share Connecticut’s holiday table. Pick one near you, or make a day of a few.
