New Jersey has a reputation for pork roll, bagels, and diner disco fries, but a plate of biscuits and sausage gravy can hold its own here too. Southern comfort food has quietly found a home in Garden State breakfast rooms, from Shore towns to the northern hills.
The good versions share a few things: biscuits with real heft, gravy loaded with sausage, and portions that make lunch optional. The five spots below take the dish seriously, and each one brings its own personality to the table.
Some are small-town country kitchens, one is a Shore brunch favorite, and another is a scratch kitchen built around takeout. Hours are short at most of them, since breakfast places tend to close by early afternoon.
Save this list for your next weekend morning, and maybe send it to the friend who always orders the gravy.
1. The Buttered Biscuit, Bradley Beach, NJ

With a name like The Buttered Biscuit, this Bradley Beach cafe had better deliver on the biscuit front. It does.
The menu lists Southern Style Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, and the gravy is rich and packed with sausage.
The biscuits here are large, and portions in general lean generous. That makes this a smart pick after a morning walk near the beach.
The menu is big, so the gravy has plenty of company. Challah Bread French Toast, a breakfast burrito, benedicts, omelets, and a homemade corned beef hash special all share the spotlight, plus toasted crumb cake for anyone who wants something sweet.
The space is bright and decorated with charm, with a festive, homey look. There is also outdoor seating, and dogs are welcome outside.
Plan around the crowds. Reservations are not accepted, there is usually a wait, and weekends are the busiest stretch.
Parking on the street can take some patience, so weekday mornings are the easier move. Hours run daily from 8 AM to 3 PM.
2. Lucille’s Country Cooking, Barnegat, NJ

Homemade is the whole point at Lucille’s. The biscuits are baked fresh, the sausage gravy is made in-house, and the home fries are shredded rather than cubed.
That kind of attention is why this Barnegat stop belongs on any biscuits and gravy list. The plate arrives big, and it is easily one of the most talked-about dishes on the menu.
The rest of the lineup reads like a country breakfast checklist. Grits, homemade creamed chipped beef, corned beef hash, sticky buns, and hearty omelets with rye toast all show up, along with homemade pies.
The setting is a small, cozy family restaurant with a historic, casual character and some outdoor seating. Service is famously friendly.
Practical perks help too. There is a free parking lot, reservations are accepted, and takeout is available.
Lucille’s is closed Mondays and open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM, with weekday mornings usually calmer than the weekend rush.
3. Granny’s Pancake House & Grill, Hamburg, NJ

One order, two plates. That is what happens with the Monster Omelet at Granny’s, where four biscuits smothered in sausage gravy arrive on one plate and a four-egg omelet with home fries lands on the other.
Hungry folks in Sussex County know this as a serious breakfast challenge. Corned beef hash comes along with it too.
If that sounds like too much, the biscuits and gravy are just as good on their own. Blueberry pancakes, the Lumberjack Omelet, and eggs Benedict round out the morning menu.
Granny’s is a long-running, family-run restaurant on Route 23 with a modest, casual space. Service moves fast, which matters on busy weekend mornings.
It also stays open later than most spots on this list. Hours run until 9 PM Wednesday through Saturday, so breakfast-for-dinner is a real option.
Parking is plentiful, though reservations are not taken.
4. Nancy’s Country Kitchen, Egg Harbor City, NJ

Homemade jellies on the table tell you a lot about a breakfast spot. At Nancy’s Country Kitchen on the White Horse Pike, that small detail matches the rest of the menu.
The biscuits are fresh and homemade, and the Sausage Gravy & Biscuits plate is the reason many people pull off the road here. Home fries come out well done, with eggs alongside.
Beyond the gravy, the menu leans proudly country. Chicken and waffles, grits, a Country Breakfast, blueberry pancakes, and Eggs Benedict Florentine all make appearances.
Portions are huge, so arriving hungry is wise. The room is small, quiet, and cute, with friendly staff and outdoor seating as well.
Timing takes a little care. Nancy’s opens at 7 AM and closes at 1:30 PM, and it is closed on Tuesdays.
Free parking is easy to find, and takeout is available if you are heading toward the Shore.
5. The Breakfast Nook, Sicklerville, NJ

Early risers get a head start in Sicklerville. The Breakfast Nook opens at 6 AM most days, which makes it an easy stop before work.
It runs as a scratch kitchen, with food made to order and locally roasted coffee. The spot works mostly as a takeout operation, though there is some seating inside and outside.
The biscuits and gravy have earned a reputation as some of the best around town. The portion is big enough that many people save part of it for later, and it travels well in a foil container.
Gourmet breakfast sandwiches and bowls get just as much attention. The menu also includes a ham, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel, French toast, Belgian waffles, and steak and eggs.
It is a small business with welcoming owners, and catering is offered too. Closing times shift by day, from 12:30 PM on Sunday to 2:45 PM Thursday through Saturday, so check before heading over.
Parking is free and plentiful.
