A food company in California got a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for not following some rules about making food safe and labeling it correctly.
In a letter sent on March 4, the FDA talked about a visit they made to Living Tree Community Foods’ factory in Berkeley, CA. They also looked at the company’s labels and website on October 11, 2023.
The FDA found that the company didn’t follow the rules, so they gave them a form listing the problems they found, called an FDA Form 483.
Here are some of the big problems they found:
- Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls:
- The company didn’t check all the possible dangers in their nut and seed butters, like bacteria or allergens, before making them.
- Current Good Manufacturing Practice:
- The equipment and tools they used weren’t always clean or well-maintained.
- Unapproved New Drugs and Misbranded Drugs:
- The company made claims about their tahini product on their website that made it seem like it could cure or prevent diseases, which isn’t allowed without FDA approval.
- Misbranded Foods:
- Some of the company’s products didn’t have the right nutrition labels or made claims about nutrients that weren’t backed up by the labels.
The FDA told the company they needed to fix these problems to make sure their food was safe and labeled correctly.
