⁤Almost a year ago, Lunchables joined the National School Lunch Program, becoming a lunch option in school cafeterias. ⁤⁤The packs were adjusted, cutting down on fat and sodium to align with the program’s guidelines. ⁤

⁤However, Consumer Reports conducted a study on Lunchables and similar lunch kits from brands like Armour and Oscar Mayer, revealing worrisome results. ⁤⁤Even the school-specific Lunchables didn’t have a good result .

⁤The Safety Concerns Surrounding Lunchables and Similar Lunch Kits ⁤

Consumer Reports raised alarms over the discovery of potentially harmful levels of heavy metals and phthalates in some lunch kits. ⁤⁤Moreover, the sodium content exceeded the recommended levels for children. ⁤⁤Despite Kraft Heinz’s claim of reducing sodium in school lunch options, Consumer Reports found them to have higher sodium levels than store-bought versions. ⁤

⁤According to Consumer Reports, their test revealed the presence of lead, cadmium, or both in all kits. ⁤⁤Even in small quantities, these heavy metals pose risks of developmental issues in children and various health problems in adults, such as hypertension and kidney damage. ⁤

Consumer Reports discovered that Lunchables Turkey and Cheddar Cracker Stackers contained 74% of California’s lead limit, while Lunchables Pizza with Pepperoni contained 73%. ⁤⁤Lunchables ranked highest in lead content, followed by Armour LunchMakers Cracker Crunchers Ham & American (67%) and Target’s Good & Gather Uncured Ham and Cheddar Cheese Lunch Kit (57%). ⁤

⁤A Call to Remove Lunchables from School Menus ⁤

⁤Consumer Reports acknowledges that the heavy metal levels in the kits did not exceed legal limits but warns that consistent consumption of heavy metals can pose long-term health risks. ⁤

⁤In conclusion, Consumer Reports advises against considering these heavily processed lunch and snack kits as healthy choices for regular consumption. ⁤

From The Club:

As someone who prioritizes health and safety, these findings are truly alarming. It’s crucial to stay informed about the products we consume, especially when it comes to our children’s meals. While convenience is key, it’s not worth compromising on quality and safety of the food we and our family eat.
