Chicken And Dumplings Taste Like Grandma's At These 8 North Carolina Restaurants

Some dishes are about more than filling you up, and chicken and dumplings sits right at the top of that list in North Carolina. Ask around the state and you will hear about pastry, slick dumplings, and fluffy ones, plus plenty of opinions on which is correct.

The good news is that you do not need a family recipe card to get a bowl that tastes like Sunday at Grandma’s. These eight restaurants, from mountain towns to Triangle neighborhoods, keep this old-fashioned favorite on the table.

1. Barney’s Cafe, Mt Airy, NC

Downtown Mount Airy already runs on small-town nostalgia, so a cafe with an old-school, diner-style setting on North Main Street fits right in. Barney’s Cafe serves a changing menu of American dishes and cakes at prices that keep most meals in the $10 to $20 range.

The chicken and dumplings are the Southern-style kind, and they pair nicely with potato cakes and corn bread. Meatloaf, the Big Country Breakfast, and the Barney Burger with onion rings also show up on the menu.

Save room for dessert. Banana pudding and fried apple pie are two of the sweetest reasons to linger.

Hours run Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 4 PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Saturdays get busy, so Sunday is the calmer pick, and the cafe does not take reservations.

2. Moose Cafe, Asheville, NC

Few restaurants get to brag about having the farmers market as a neighbor. Moose Cafe sits right at the Western North Carolina Farmers Market on Brevard Road, and it leans on locally grown vegetables for its Southern comfort cooking.

The chicken and dumplings are a big draw, but the sides deserve equal billing. Green beans, pinto beans, and cornbread round out the plate, and the biscuits arrive with apple butter.

Fried chicken, trout, meatloaf, and country fried steak fill out the rest of the menu. Finish with a slice of Moose Cake if you still have room.

The cafe is open daily from 8 AM to 7 PM. Weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds, while weekday evenings are much quieter, and there are no reservations.

3. Country Kitchen, Dallas, NC

Early birds have the advantage in Dallas. Country Kitchen opens at 6:30 AM on weekdays and closes at 2 PM, with no weekend hours, so this is a plan-ahead kind of stop.

The menu sticks to home-cooked country food. Chicken n’ dumplings headline the lunch side, often joined by fried squash and green beans.

Breakfast is served all day, and the giant pancakes are hard to ignore. Double cheeseburger baskets are on hand too.

The setting is laid-back and friendly, right along Main Street in this small Gaston County town. Free parking is easy to find, and midweek mornings tend to be the busiest.

4. Sharpe’s Cafe on Crawford, Statesville, NC

Big portions and fair prices go a long way, and Sharpe’s Cafe on Crawford delivers both. This Statesville spot serves hearty homemade breakfast and lunch with a true neighborhood cafe personality.

Chicken and dumplings rank among the standouts here. They fit right into a menu built on good old Southern cooking.

The staff keep things friendly and efficient, which matters because the cafe stays busy through every weekday. Hours are Monday through Friday from 6 AM to 2 PM.

Families will find high chairs and a kids’ menu. Dogs are welcome outside, reservations are accepted, and on-site parking is free.

5. Virlie’s Grill, Pittsboro, NC

Plenty of small-town diners close after lunch. Virlie’s Grill keeps cooking until 8 PM most weeknights, so a dumpling dinner in Pittsboro is very doable.

This family-owned restaurant serves homestyle American food in a laid-back Southern setting. The chicken and dumplings are a regular favorite, often treated as the go-to special.

Meatloaf, steak, and cooked-to-order burgers share the menu. For dessert, the strawberry cake and pineapple cake both get attention.

Hours are Monday through Thursday from 6:30 AM to 8 PM, Friday until 8:30 PM, and Saturday from 7 AM to noon. Tuesday evenings and Friday nights draw a crowd, and reservations are accepted.

6. Angie’s Restaurant, Garner, NC

Mark Monday on the calendar. Angie’s Restaurant runs Chicken and Dumpling Mondays, which gives the start of the week a much better reputation.

Any other day, look for Chicken Pastry on the menu. It is the eastern North Carolina version of the dish, with flat strips of dough cooked in rich broth, and it scratches the same itch.

The rest of the menu is simple Southern comfort. Country fried steak, fried pork chops, biscuits and gravy, and Angie’s Big Country Omelet all make appearances, and Fridays bring flounder and shrimp.

Doors open at 5:30 AM Monday through Saturday, closing at 2 PM on weekdays and noon on Saturday. Expect a wait at peak times, though free Wi-Fi helps pass it.

7. Big Ed’s North Restaurant, Raleigh, NC

In the Triangle, plenty of folks call it chicken and pastry, and Big Ed’s North serves it with real country credentials. The restaurant sits in the Corners Shopping Center on Falls of Neuse Road in North Raleigh.

The chicken and pastry is a comfort food favorite here. Pair it with good sides and leave space for the desserts.

Breakfast fans get country ham biscuits, hot cakes, and grits. Lunch and dinner bring fried chicken livers over rice with gravy, grilled salmon cakes with slaw, and fried pork chops.

The restaurant is closed Mondays. It opens at 7 AM Tuesday through Sunday, staying until 8 PM on weekdays and closing at 2 PM on weekends, when it gets busiest.

8. Abele’s Family Restaurant, Morganton, NC

A restaurant with its own candy store makes an easy sell to kids. Abele’s Family Restaurant in Morganton pairs hearty comfort food with nostalgic decor and a candy shop on the way out.

Here, chicken and dumplings often come as a homemade soup. It rotates alongside choices like chili and vegetable soup, with all-you-can-eat sides and a salad bar.

The bigger menu covers pot roast, country fried steak, and chicken and waffles. Cobbler and hot fudge sundae cake handle dessert duty.

Abele’s keeps long hours, opening at 6 or 7 AM and staying open until 11 PM on Fridays. Sunday mornings and Friday nights are busiest, and there is outdoor seating plus curbside pickup.
