Some breakfasts are fancy, and some just get the job done on a cold day. Creamed chipped beef on toast belongs in the second group, and Maryland diners have kept it on the menu for generations.
It is salty, filling, and cheap, which is exactly what a frosty morning calls for. Plenty of folks grew up calling it SOS, and plenty of others have never tried it at all.
This list covers seven Maryland diners where the dish still gets real attention, from the boardwalk town of Ocean City to the mountain roads near Cumberland. Some of these spots open before sunrise, a few stay open past midnight, and one pours the gravy over biscuits instead of toast.
Every stop here is a sit-down diner with friendly prices, so you can fill up without much fuss. Save this one for the next time the thermometer drops.
1. General’s Kitchen, Ocean City, MD

Ocean City in the off-season has a quieter rhythm, and General’s Kitchen is one of the places that gives early risers a reason to get moving. Creamed chipped beef is the dish this longtime diner is known for, plain and simple.
The house special pairs the chipped beef with biscuits, which is a nice change if you usually take yours over toast. There is also a Chipped Beef Omelette for anyone who wants the flavor folded into their eggs.
Beyond the signature dish, the menu covers omelets, chicken fried steak, hotcakes, and French toast. The hash browns get plenty of attention too, and service moves fast.
Hours run 6:30 AM to 1 PM every day, so this is strictly a breakfast and lunch stop. The diner does not take reservations, but there is a free parking lot at 6601 Coastal Hwy.
Prices usually land around $10 to $20 per person. I would save this one for a chilly morning after a walk along the beach.
2. Cambridge Diner, Cambridge, MD

Road trippers heading toward the Eastern Shore beaches pass right by this one on Old Route 50. Cambridge Diner is a relaxed roadside stop, and creamed chipped beef is one of its most popular orders.
Breakfast regulars also go for the beef scrapple, a regional twist on a Mid-Atlantic classic. Portions run large and prices stay low.
One quick tip: if toast matters to you, mention it when you order so your chipped beef arrives exactly how you like it.
The kitchen keeps going well past breakfast. Lunch and dinner bring burgers, ribs, liver and onions, crab cakes, cream of crab soup, and a salad bar.
Doors open at 6 AM daily, closing at 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 8 PM on Sunday. Sunday mornings are the busiest stretch, so weekdays are easier if you want a quiet booth.
3. Tastee Diner, Bethesda, MD

Bethesda keeps getting newer and shinier, yet Tastee Diner still holds onto its old-school, 1950s look. It is part of a longtime local diner chain, and the historic feel is a big part of the appeal.
The move here is fluffy biscuits topped with creamed chipped beef. The gravy has earned a strong following among SOS fans in the DC suburbs.
Corned beef hash, blueberry pancakes, French toast, grits, and hot cakes with eggs and bacon round out the breakfast side. Counter seating makes it easy to stop in alone.
Current hours are 6 AM to 10 PM daily. Weekend mornings get crowded, and parking near Woodmont Ave can take some patience.
Plan to walk a bit or arrive early. A booth and a hot plate make up for it.
4. Double T Diner, Annapolis, MD

Peanut butter pancakes might steal your attention at first glance. Still, creamed chipped beef on toast is on the menu at Double T Diner, and it is a solid cold-weather pick.
Double T is a Maryland diner chain with a retro style and a very long menu. The Annapolis location sits at 12 Defense St, close to Route 50.
Scrapple, waffles, French toast, jumbo lump crab cakes, and cream of crab soup all share the menu. The dessert case near the front is hard to walk past.
The diner runs 7 AM to 9:30 PM daily, and waits tend to stay short even when it is busy. Weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds.
Free parking makes it an easy stop before exploring downtown Annapolis or heading across the Bay Bridge.
5. Hagerstown Family Diner, Hagerstown, MD

A 5 AM opening time tells you a lot about who this diner serves. Early shift workers and travelers on the Dual Hwy can grab a hot plate before most kitchens even turn the lights on.
Hagerstown Family Diner is all about big portions of homestyle comfort food. Chipped beef and sausage gravy sit near the top of the breakfast lineup, served with home fries.
Later in the day, the extensive menu shifts to hot wings, cheeseburger clubs, and even scallops. Seating is roomy, which helps with larger groups.
Unlike many diners, this one accepts reservations. On Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until midnight.
6. The Filling Station, La Vale, MD

Western Maryland winters come early, and the folks along the old National Road know how to answer them. The Filling Station in La Vale fuels up the area with homemade chipped beef gravy over toast.
Homemade biscuits with sausage gravy are another favorite. The pancakes are famously huge, so sharing is not a bad idea.
It is a small, quiet spot with a hometown diner feel and affordable prices. Free Wi-Fi and plenty of parking make it an easy stop on a drive through the mountains.
Check the schedule before you go. It is closed Monday, open 8 AM to 9 PM Tuesday through Saturday, and only until 2 PM on Sunday.
7. College Park Diner, College Park, MD

Late-night cravings for SOS are not a problem in College Park. This diner on Baltimore Ave stays open until midnight most nights and until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Chipped beef on toast comes in generous portions, and sausage gravy is on hand too. Both are tough to find nearby, which makes this place a go-to for gravy fans around the University of Maryland.
The rest of the menu sticks to the basics: Belgian waffles, eggs cooked to order, western omelets, burgers, and patty melts.
Expect a straightforward setting with counter seating and a mix of students and families. Doors open at 6 AM daily, with free on-site parking out front.
