Crisp Fall Mornings Are Perfect For These 7 Georgia Cider Mills And Apple Houses

North Georgia has a way of turning a chilly morning into a full day of apple shopping. Once the leaves start to change, the roads around Ellijay, Blue Ridge, and the northeast mountains fill with folks hunting for fresh cider, fried pies, and bags of just-picked fruit.

Some of these farms have been growing apples for generations, while others add hayrides, gem mining, or a corn maze to the mix. This list covers seven orchards and apple houses that make an early start feel like a smart plan instead of a sacrifice.

Grab a jacket, bring a cooler for the trunk, and pick a route. Some stops sit right next door to each other, so a single drive can easily turn into three or four.

Each one has its own reason to earn a spot on your fall calendar, from century-old farm roots to tasting tables that help you choose the right apple.

1. Mercier Orchards, Blue Ridge, GA

Back in 1943, this Blue Ridge orchard got its start, and today it stretches across roughly 300 acres. That kind of history shows up in how much there is to do here.

A tractor ride carries visitors out into the orchard for pick-your-own fruit, which changes with the seasons. Fall is prime apple time, and the trees make a pretty backdrop against the mountains.

Back at the store, the shelves are packed with homemade goodies. The orchard makes its own cider, and the fried pies and apple pies are a big part of why people keep coming back.

I like this one as a first stop before heading into downtown Blue Ridge. It sits at 8660 Blue Ridge Dr, with a free on-site parking lot.

Hours run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and stretch to 6 p.m.

Friday through Sunday. An early weekday arrival gives you more elbow room in the orchard.

2. B.J. Reece Orchards, Ellijay, GA

A roadside sign promising the “world’s best fried apple pie” is a bold claim, and B.J. Reece Orchards is happy to let you be the judge.

The fried pies here have a loyal following.

Ellijay calls itself the Apple Capital of Georgia, and this farm on GA-52 leans right into that title. Apple picking is the main event, but there is also a petting zoo and farm tours.

Families with little ones tend to linger. Dogs are allowed too, which is a nice perk for anyone road-tripping with a four-legged co-pilot.

After picking, head into the shop for fruit, cider, and apple treats. A cider slushy is a popular way to cool off after an hour between the rows.

One practical tip: bring some cash, since card payment for food has not always been available. The farm is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays, with free parking.

3. Jaemor Farms, Alto, GA

Early birds get the best shot at Jaemor. The market opens at 7 a.m.

Monday through Saturday, which makes it one of the easiest crisp-morning stops on this list.

This family-owned farm has been growing produce for more than a century. The market on Cornelia Hwy carries fruits and vegetables along with jams, jellies, pies, breads, and a mix of gift items.

Homemade ice cream is part of the lineup too. It is a fun fall treat, even when the air has a bit of a bite.

Kids can hop on a hayride and play games outside. That makes Jaemor a good pick if your crew needs more than shopping to stay happy.

Weekend afternoons get crowded, especially Saturday and Sunday. Sundays open at 1 p.m., and there is free parking on site.

4. Hillside Orchard Farms, Lakemont, GA

Seven hundred products is a lot of jars. Hillside Orchard Farms makes them at its own wholesale plant just up the road, then stocks the country store in Lakemont.

Expect rows of ciders, jellies, jams, and preserves. The bakery case adds fried pies, fritters, apple cider donuts, and peach donuts.

Fall brings U-pick apples and muscadines, plus a corn maze. There is also a gem mine and farm animals, so this stop works well for families who want an activity along with a snack.

Train and hayrides are available by appointment. Call ahead at 706-782-2776 if that is on your wish list.

I would save this one for stocking the pantry with shelf-stable gifts. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

5. R & A Orchards, Ellijay, GA

Hungry for more than apples? R & A Orchards has a cafe and bakery inside its farm market, which sets it apart from many Ellijay stops.

The family-run farm covers about 200 acres. Fresh fruits and vegetables grown there fill the market along with canned goods, honey, salsas, jellies, and cider.

Fried fruit pies and baked treats come straight from the bakery. It is a handy spot to grab breakfast before heading into the orchard.

In fall, tractor tours roll out and U-pick opens for apples and flowers. Golden apples are a favorite for picking here.

Prices on bushels tend to be reasonable, a plus for anyone filling a trunk. R & A is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 5505 GA-52.

6. Panorama Farm Market, Ellijay, GA

Can’t decide between a Fuji and a Granny Smith? Panorama Farm Market sets out a tasting table so you can sample before you buy.

The staff are known for helping match shoppers with the right apple. Bags come in different sizes, so you can grab a few or haul home a pile.

Sweets get equal billing here. Handmade pies, cakes, fudge, and ice cream share space with fried apple pies and loaves like blueberry apple bread and lemon blueberry bread.

Cider, honey, and seasonal produce such as sweet potatoes round out the shelves. Peaches show up in their season as well.

Panorama sits at 63 Talona Mountain Rd and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekend afternoons are busiest, so a morning visit keeps things easy.

7. Penland Orchards & Farm Market (formerly Penland’s Apple House), Ellijay, GA

Five generations. The Penland family has been growing fruit in Gilmer County since 1936, and the orchard is still family owned and operated.

You may remember it as Penland’s Apple House. The name changed, but the focus stays on apples, with a large selection of varieties at fair prices.

Homemade fried pies and apple fritters lead the bakery lineup. Apple bread, apple butter, cider, and apple slushies keep the theme going.

Beyond apples, the market stocks peaches, vegetables, jams, relishes, eggs, and some locally sourced meats. It makes a good one-stop shop for local goodies.

Penland is open seasonally, starting in summer and closing in winter, so plan your fall trip accordingly. Find it at 41 Talona Mountain Rd, right near Panorama, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Two apple houses on one road makes for an easy double stop, and a fitting way to wrap up a crisp morning in the mountains.
