Eight Connecticut Pizza Joints Outside New Haven That Locals Have Loved For Decades

New Haven gets most of the pizza headlines, but Connecticut’s love for a good pie stretches far beyond Wooster Street. Some of the state’s most loyal pizza crowds gather in Stamford, Derby, Mystic, Willington, and other towns where the same family recipes have been feeding regulars for generations.

These spots are not trendy pop-ups. They are places where grandparents brought their kids, and those kids now bring their own.

This list covers eight pizzerias outside New Haven with real history, a signature pie or two, and the kind of staying power that only comes from getting it right year after year.

1. Colony Grill – Stamford, Stamford, CT

Two words explain the Colony Grill fan club: hot oil. The thin-crust bar pies here get a drizzle of the signature oil, and many regulars add stingers, which are roasted serrano peppers that bring real heat.

The Myrtle Avenue spot has been serving pizza since 1962, and the walls tell part of the story. Photos of military customers and former owners give the room a true neighborhood bar personality.

The menu stays focused. Sausage is a classic topping, and the salad pizza is a fun option if you want something fresh on top of your crust.

Plan ahead on weekends, since Thursday through Sunday evenings get busy and reservations are not accepted. Saturday mornings are the quietest time.

Hours run until 12:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes it a solid late-night pick.

TVs make it a good stop during a big game, and families are welcome too, with high chairs available.

2. Roseland Apizza, Derby, CT

Roseland has been a Derby fixture since 1935, which means it was baking New Haven-style apizza before many of today’s famous names had fans outside their own blocks.

The crust is crunchy, and the balance of cheese and sauce is the reason people make the trip up Hawthorne Avenue. The kitchen also goes beyond pizza, with lobster ravioli and other Italian dishes on the menu.

I would save this one for a night when you want a sit-down meal with a little old-school character. The setting is cozy and historic, and the pizza presentation gets as much attention as the toppings.

A few practical notes matter here. Roseland is closed Mondays, opens at 3 PM on weekdays and 1 PM on weekends, and does not take reservations.

A wait is common, so Tuesday afternoon is a smart window.

There is no delivery, but takeout and catering are available.

3. Mystic Pizza, Mystic, CT

Few pizzerias can say they inspired a Hollywood movie. Mystic Pizza can, since the 1988 film borrowed its name, and the West Main Street restaurant leans happily into that history.

Movie memorabilia covers the walls, so there is plenty to look at while you wait for your order. It makes a fun stop during a day exploring downtown Mystic.

The menu is broader than you might expect. Along with classic pies, there is a deep-dish style, fried mushrooms, calamari, burgers, and the house Mystic salad.

Families get a kids’ menu and high chairs, and the restaurant also offers rooftop seating and a private dining room. It opens at 10 AM daily and stays open until 11 PM.

Parking downtown can be tricky, especially on weekend afternoons, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find a space.

4. Willington Pizza House, Willington, CT

Potato on pizza sounds odd until you try the version that made Willington Pizza House famous. The signature red potato pie comes topped with bacon and onions, and it has been pulling in Tolland County regulars for around four decades.

Then there is the seafood pizza, which is not what the name suggests. It is an award-winning pie loaded with hamburger, red onion, bacon bits, ketchup, mustard, and pickles.

Beyond the specialty pies, the menu covers grinders, pastas, salads, and homemade soups. Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options make it easy to feed a mixed group.

Sports and local memorabilia fill the walls, giving the River Road spot a hometown feel. Outdoor seating is available, and dogs are welcome outside.

The free on-site lot usually has room, and the restaurant opens at 10:30 AM every day.

5. Domenic’s & Vinnie’s Pizza, Middlebury, CT

Ask around the greater Waterbury area for pizza, and Domenic’s & Vinnie’s tends to come up quickly. The long-running local name has customers who have been ordering for more than 40 years.

The Middlebury location keeps things simple. The setting is low-key and quiet, and the menu sticks to classic pizzas with a long list of toppings and specialty pies.

Crispy crust is the calling card here. Service tends to move quickly, which helps on a busy weeknight.

Hours are limited, so check before heading out. It is closed Mondays, opens at 3:30 PM Tuesday through Friday, and opens at noon on weekends.

Reservations are not accepted.

Free parking is easy to find, and delivery and takeout are both options if you would rather eat at home.

6. Letizia’s Pizza, Norwalk, CT

Don’t let the strip-mall storefront fool you. Letizia’s dates back to 1937, and it is now run by the third generation of the family.

The sauce is the conversation starter. It has a distinct flavor that pairs with a crispy thin crust and cheese that browns nicely at the edges.

Along with pizza, the kitchen turns out Italian dishes, and full vegetarian and vegan menus are available. A kids’ menu helps with younger diners.

The space is casual and quiet, with outdoor seating where dogs are allowed. Free Wi-Fi and a free lot add to the easygoing vibe.

Timing is important. Letizia’s is closed Mondays, opens at 11 AM Tuesday through Saturday, and opens at 3 PM on Sundays.

7. Zuppardi’s Apizza, West Haven, CT

Clam pie fans, this one is for you. Zuppardi’s, just over the line in West Haven, is best known for its baby clam pizza made with fresh clams on a standout crust.

The family-run pizzeria traces its roots to the 1930s, and family photos on the walls keep that history front and center.

The menu has some fun twists too. Red sauce chicken pesto, meatball sausage mozzarella, and white cheese broccoli all show the range beyond the clam pie.

It is a small space, and reservations are not accepted. Weekend evenings and Sunday afternoons fill up, while weekday mornings are quiet.

Curbside pickup and takeout are available, so you can skip the wait if needed.

8. Jerry’s Pizza, Middletown, CT

Plain cheese is the real test of any pizzeria, and Jerry’s passes it in a way people remember from childhood. The cheese pizza at this Middletown spot has a one-of-a-kind reputation.

Slices are large and thin, with a chewy crust and plenty of toppings if you want more. The white clam pizza is another well-known order.

The menu also includes Italian grinders, crisp salads, and wings, so it works for a group with different cravings.

Jerry’s is family-owned, with unassuming digs on South Main Street. TVs make it a decent place to catch a game, and it stays open until 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Free parking, a kids’ menu, and delivery round out a practical stop near Wesleyan.
