Fall Is Finally Here, And These 7 New Jersey Orchards Are Pressing Fresh Cider

Cooler mornings in New Jersey mean one thing for a lot of us: it is time to grab a jug of fresh apple cider. Across the state, family orchards are filling their market shelves with cider, warm donuts, pies, and baskets of just-picked apples.

Some of these farms press their own cider, and a few even let you pick the apples yourself before you head inside to shop. From Hunterdon County hills to Monmouth County farm stands, here are seven orchards that make fall taste the way it should.

1. Melick’s Town Farm – Oldwick Cider Mill & Orchard, Oldwick, NJ

Oldwick is the kind of small Hunterdon County village where a cider mill fits right in. Melick’s runs its Oldwick Cider Mill and Orchard as a seasonal stop, with pick your own apples from mid September into November.

A hayride carries pickers out to the trees, and apples are paid for by the pound at the register. On the way to checkout, shelves hold jugs of cider, apple pies, fruit jellies, and condiments, so it is easy to leave with more than you planned.

The kid-friendly cider is the star for families, and the donuts make a strong case for a second bag. Picnic tables near the entrance give you a spot to enjoy hot dogs, popcorn, cider, or bottled water, and a swing set keeps younger visitors busy.

The orchard is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM during the season, with free parking on site. If you want cider after picking season ends, Melick’s year-round Oldwick Farm Market sits at 170 Oldwick Rd.

2. Delicious Orchards, Colts Neck, NJ

Sweet or tart is the big decision at Delicious Orchards. The cider here is made from fresh-pressed apples, and it comes in both styles, which makes this Route 34 market a favorite stop for anyone who likes options.

Inside, the place is a sprawling country produce market. Expect fresh fruits and vegetables, apples from the farm’s own orchard, a wide spread of homemade pies and baked goods, prepared foods, and fresh ground coffee.

I would pick up one jug of each cider and let the family vote at home. The tart version has a loyal following for good reason.

Plan around the schedule, since the market is closed Mondays and open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM. Weekend afternoons get busy, so a weekday morning visit is the smoother choice.

Restrooms and parking are on site.

3. Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill, Chester, NJ

Wood-pressed cider is the old-school calling card at Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill. Sitting on State Park Road in Chester, the farm uses that cider in its donuts too.

The donut lineup comes in plain, cinnamon, powdered sugar, and pumpkin. Fresh batches go fast, so arriving early is a smart move.

Warm apple cider is on hand for chilly days, and the farm also offers pick your own apples and pumpkins in season. Fresh eggs are another reason to stop by the farm stand.

Timing matters here. Hacklebarney is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM and closed Monday through Wednesday, so this is a weekend-leaning trip.

Free parking is available on site.

4. Terhune Orchards, Princeton, NJ

Cider slushies are a fun twist you will find at Terhune Orchards, a Princeton farm on Cold Soil Road. It is a nice reminder that fresh apple cider is not only for hot mugs.

The farm is built for wandering. Visitors stroll the grounds, pick apples in the fall, and pick blueberries earlier in the season.

The farm store carries a strong selection of apples, plus cider and cinnamon sugar apple donuts that pair together well. Grab both before heading home.

Terhune is open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM, and weekday afternoons work for a relaxed picking trip. Parking is free.

5. Wightman Farms, Morristown, NJ

Farming in Morristown since 1922, Wightman Farms has had more than a century to perfect its fall routine. The Farm Market and Cider Mill stay open year-round, which means cider does not have to be a seasonal treat here.

Fall weekends in September and October bring the big activities. Think a giant corn maze, apple picking, and hayrides, with those attractions running from 9 AM to 4:30 PM on weekends only.

The pick your own fields and orchards also open weekends from May through October. The market itself keeps longer hours, daily from 8 AM to 6 PM.

Apple cider donuts are a big draw any time of year. The farm also runs a CSA with weekly boxes of vegetables and fruit from May through September.

6. Battleview Orchards, Freehold, NJ

Here is a Monmouth County stop that keeps things simple and classic. Battleview Orchards is a family farm on Wemrock Road with a quaint country store selling fruit, pies, cider donuts, and seasonal apple cider.

Fall visits revolve around pick your own apples, a pumpkin patch, and hayrides. It is a quick, easy outing that still checks every autumn box.

Watch the calendar, because the store is closed Tuesdays. It opens 9 AM to 6 PM the rest of the week.

Weekend afternoons are the busiest stretch. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer if you want first pick of the donuts.

7. Melick’s Town Farm – Califon Orchards, Califon, NJ

Asian pears are not something you see at every New Jersey orchard, and that alone makes Melick’s Califon location stand out. Pick your own season here runs from July into November, covering peaches, apples, Asian pears, and pumpkins.

The farm store stocks home grown sweet corn, tomatoes, and other produce. Apple cider, cider donuts, pies, flowers, and bakery items round out the shelves.

Hayrides add to the fall fun on County Road 513. The orchard is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM with free parking.

Since this is the second Melick’s spot on the list, I would save it for a summer peach run and come back for cider in October. A CSA subscription is also available, with weekly pickups on Wednesdays.
