Fried Shrimp And Deviled Crab Have Kept Georgians Coming To Desposito's Since The 1970s

Some restaurants feel like they have been waiting for you all along, and Desposito’s Seafood in Thunderbolt is one of them. Tucked beside the water just outside Savannah, this Southern seafood shack has fed hungry Georgians for decades.

It recently reopened after renovations, and locals are lining up again for hush puppies, fried shrimp, and seafood by the pound. I spent time digging into what makes it special, and here is what I found.

Picture a road winding off the main drag, then a low-key building sitting right by the water. That is Desposito’s Seafood, found at 3501 Macceo Dr in Thunderbolt, Georgia.

Google describes it as a no-frills joint for seafood by the pound. Think boiled shrimp, steamed oysters, and crab legs served Southern style, with nothing fussy getting in the way.

Thunderbolt is a small town tucked between Savannah and Tybee Island. One visitor said they wanted an off-the-beaten-path option for fresh seafood on that drive, and this place hit the mark.

I love that feeling of finding something locals clearly treasure. With a 4.4-star rating across 694 Google reviews, plenty of people agree that the detour is worth it.

History Worth Asking About

Ask almost any regular and they will bring up the history. Several reviewers mention reading about the place before visiting, and one called the backstory genuinely interesting.

Desposito’s has been part of the Thunderbolt scene since the 1970s, which explains the loyalty. After a period of renovations, it reopened, and one guest praised how well the work restored the history of the building.

The reopening drew crowds right away. A visitor who came for the soft opening found the place packed.

More recently, it opened its doors again after another pause. One happy returning diner cheered that it was finally open, noting the hush puppies still taste just like they used to.

Not everything is finished, though. A recent guest said the bar area looked nice while the dining room still needed work, so expect a restaurant still settling back into itself.

Here is a bold claim from a local who eats a lot of seafood: the fried shrimp at Desposito’s are some of the best they have ever had. That is high praise in a region full of shrimp.

Fried shrimp pops up again and again in reviews. One regular named it among their favorites, and a family visiting from out of town enjoyed it too.

The shrimp basket also gets frequent mentions online. It is the easy pick when you want something classic and crunchy.

If you want a different take, the shrimp boil comes recommended. One diner said the shrimp and Conecuh sausage really make that dish.

Shrimp tacos and bacon-wrapped shrimp round out the lineup, so shrimp lovers have options.

Bring on the hush puppies! That was the cheerful cry of one returning guest, and honestly, I get it.

These little fried bites are the single most-mentioned item in reviews. Regulars love that they still have sweet corn mixed into the batter, just like the old days.

Even a diner who had a mixed visit overall called the hush puppies great. When a side wins over a tough critic, it is doing something right.

Order a basket for the table while you look over the menu. They disappear fast, so you may want two.

Crab, Soups, and Cheesy Comfort

Crab has always been part of the story here, and the menu leans into it. A recent visitor called the crab dip amazing, while others order crab legs by the pound.

The she crab soup earns a lot of chatter. One diner noted it is not quite the usual Lowcountry style but still highly recommended this spin on a classic.

Opinions split a bit on the crab stew. A regular admitted they prefer a heartier version, though they loved most everything else.

Popular items can sell out. One guest arrived at 5:30 p.m. hoping for crab soup and found it gone, so earlier visits are safer.

Then there is the lobster mac and cheese. Several diners called it a must, describing it as rich, flavorful, and loved by everyone at the table.

Scampi, Oysters, and Other Favorites

Shrimp scampi might be the quiet star. It shows up in many reviews, with diners calling it fresh and generous.

Oyster fans have choices too. Steamed oysters come by the pound, and one lunch guest said the fried oyster plate brought more oysters than promised, crisp outside and juicy inside.

Fish gets plenty of love. The fried fish basket came with a big, perfectly cooked fillet, and grouper and flounder both drew praise.

Not every dish lands, to be fair. A few visitors found some plates too salty, like the flounder BLT, and one thought a shrimp salad sandwich lacked flavor.

Starters like calamari, loaded nachos with homemade chips, and deviled eggs give you plenty to share.

Outdoor Bar and Water Views

Grab a seat outside and listen. One guest described sitting surrounded by water sounds and nature, and that pretty much sums up the vibe.

Outdoor seating is the most talked-about feature in reviews. There is a bar inside and another on the patio, plus a semi-outdoor option for breezy days.

Sunset views get mentioned too, and several diners point out the nice view of the water. On a mild Sunday, one regular said they could not ask for more.

Live music shows up in reviews now and then. The outdoor bar has even hosted community events like a charity bingo night.

Flights are fun, and Desposito’s has offered Bloody Mary and rum flights. Early visitors tried both and liked them.

Cocktail reviews range from glowing to so-so. One guest loved the Moscow mule, while another thought the drinks could use a bit more sweetness.

Heads up for now: after the latest reopening, one diner reported the bar was not fully open and drinks were limited. It is smart to call ahead if cocktails matter to your plans.

Sitting at the bar and ordering dinner there is an option too, and one couple said it made the meal more fun.

Service, Crowd, and Who It Suits

Families, couples, road trippers heading to Tybee, and locals all seem to find their way here. One reviewer called it unpretentious, with no hint of fanciness, just good food.

Many guests praise warm, attentive staff. A table of seven left stuffed and happy, and even the kids’ chicken fingers got a thumbs up.

Service can be uneven, though. A couple of diners described absent servers or a rude phone call, and management responded to complaints with apologies.

The menu also covers non-seafood eaters with a veggie pasta and a crispy chicken sandwich.

Lunch or dinner both work. Desposito’s opens at 11 AM daily, closing at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Expect to spend about $20 to $30 per person. Some found it a touch pricey early on, while others called the prices reasonable.

Weekends get busy, and one Saturday afternoon visitor faced a wait that they felt was worth it. Arrive early for popular items like the crab soup.

Would I send a friend here? Absolutely, with a little advice.

Go for the fried shrimp, hush puppies, scampi, and lobster mac and cheese. Sit outside if the weather plays nice.

Since the restaurant is still finding its rhythm after reopening, be patient with a smaller menu and a bar still coming back. The heart of the place, its history and its waterside charm, is clearly intact.

For a laid-back seafood meal between Savannah and Tybee, Desposito’s remains a sweet little stop.
