Arizona does a lot of things well, but few foods start friendly arguments faster than a good green chile cheeseburger. Roasted chiles, melted cheese, and a thick patty make a simple meal feel like a local tradition.
From mountain towns to old mining streets, some grills quietly serve versions worth planning a road trip around. Here are seven spots that deserve a spot on your burger map.
1. Macky’s Grill, Payson, AZ

Payson sits in pine country, and Macky’s Grill has been feeding hungry travelers on West Main Street since 1997. The cowboy theme sets a relaxed tone before the food even arrives.
The burger to know here is the AZ Chili Bomber. It stacks two 7-ounce patties with fresh roasted green chiles, thick bacon, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, and onion, so bring an appetite.
Sweet potato fries, onion straws, and club sandwiches round out the menu. Save a little room for the carrot cake if you can manage it.
Dog owners get a bonus here, since the patio welcomes pups. Hours run Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, with Mondays closed.
Weekend afternoons get busy, so an earlier weekday lunch is the smart move. Parking is free and usually easy to find.
2. Haunted Hamburger, Jerome, AZ

Ghost stories and green chiles make a strange pair, yet they work just fine on Clark Street. Haunted Hamburger sits in Jerome, the old mining town clinging to the side of Cleopatra Hill.
The house Haunted Burger comes with a whole roasted green chile on top. There is also a southwest sourdough burger and a pastrami burger paired with jalapeño slaw for anyone who likes extra kick.
Here is my tip. Ask for a table by an east-facing window, where the view stretches roughly 100 miles across the valley.
The spot is popular with visitors, so a wait is common, especially on weekend afternoons. Doors open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM, and weekday evenings tend to be calmer.
Prices stay reasonable for a tourist town, which makes it a solid family stop during a day trip from Sedona or Prescott.
3. Bill’s Grill, Prescott, AZ

Seasoned patties sound like a small detail until you taste the difference. Bill’s Grill on South Montezuma Street takes that step, and it shows in its green chile burger.
Toppings like green chiles, cooked onions, and bacon are where this place shines. Adding bacon to the green chile burger is a popular combo.
The menu goes well beyond burgers, with patty melts, Reubens, fish and chips, and milkshakes. Chili cheese fries with fry sauce are another favorite, and gluten-free and grass-fed options are available.
Breakfast is served too, since the grill opens daily at 8 AM and closes at 8 PM. Friday afternoons and evenings draw the biggest crowds, and reservations are not taken.
4. Amigos | Burgers & Beer, Tucson, AZ

A sign reading Best Burgers in Tucson hangs over the door, which is a bold promise near the airport on South Nogales Highway. Amigos backs it up with house-made patties and fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion.
Two burgers matter most for chile fans. The Amigo Burger with green chiles is a go-to, while the Southside burger adds green chiles, onion rings, and chipotle ketchup.
The green chile here leans mild, so it suits folks who want flavor without much heat. Pickle fries and Amigos Fries are easy sides to share.
You can sit in the dining room or the bar area, and sports are often on. It opens at 10 AM daily, closing at 9 PM Monday and Tuesday and 10 PM the rest of the week.
5. Hatch It: Green Chile Burgers & Tacos, Phoenix, AZ

When green chile is literally in the name, expectations run high. Hatch It on North 7th Avenue leans into New Mexican flavors with a menu built around the roasted pepper.
The green chile cheeseburger arrives smothered in chiles roasted to order. Pair it with green chile cheese fries topped with queso.
Burgers are only part of the story. Green chile pork burritos, green chile pork tacos, a green chile meatloaf sandwich, and red chile posole all share the menu, and breakfast burritos make mornings worth an early start.
You can even take roasted green chile home by the pound, including an extra hot version.
Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 7:30 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Mondays and Tuesdays are closed, so plan ahead.
6. Lucy’s Burgers, Flagstaff, AZ

Retro diners and Arizona beef are a winning combo on the east side of Flagstaff. Lucy’s Burgers brings a 1950s theme to US-89 and uses Arizona-sourced beef.
The Green Chili Burger tops its patty with two large slices of green chile and a moderate level of heat. For something bigger, the half-pound Juicy Lucy with green chiles added is a popular upgrade.
Beer-battered onion rings, cheese curds, and chili cheese fries fill out the sides. Shakes finish things on a classic note.
Ordering happens at the counter, and the service moves quickly. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM.
It works well for families and students heading in or out of town toward the national monuments north of Flagstaff.
7. Bisbee’s Table, Bisbee, AZ

Old photos of Bisbee line the walls at this Copper Queen Plaza restaurant, giving diners a quick history lesson with lunch. The mining town setting makes the whole meal feel like part of a road trip.
Burger fans can order a loaded version with jalapeños, green chile, bacon, BBQ sauce, and pepper jack cheese. The half-pound Austin burger is another hearty pick with a choice of cheese.
Truffle fries and onion rings are strong sides. The broader menu covers fish and chips, Meatza Pizza, Copperman Pasta, and a Brownie Explosion for dessert.
Prices run a bit higher than the other stops, around $20 to $30 per person. Reservations are accepted, and hours are 11 AM to 9 PM daily, with Saturday afternoons being busiest.
From burgers in the pines to chiles in the desert, these seven grills show just how many ways Arizona can stack a great green chile cheeseburger. Save this list for your next drive.
