In Ohio, The Holidays Start With A Dozen Tamales From One Of These 7 Shops

Some families put up the tree first. Plenty of Ohio families start somewhere else, with a warm bag of tamales on the kitchen counter.

Tamales take hours to make by hand, which is exactly why they show up at holiday tables across Mexico and Latin America, and why buying them by the dozen has become a shortcut many of us happily take. The good news is that Ohio has real tamale shops in every corner of the state, from Toledo to Cincinnati.

Some are bakeries, some are grocery stores with busy counters, and some are taquerias that also sell tamales to go. This list covers seven of them, with practical notes on hours, parking, and what else to grab while you are there.

Save it before December gets busy.

1. Spicy Cup Bakery, Columbus, OH

Early birds get the tamales here, and the doors open at 6 AM Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, the bakery opens at 7 AM, and it stays open until 9:30 PM every night.

Spicy Cup Bakery sits on East Dublin Granville Road on the north side of Columbus. It works as both a Mexican bakery and a cafe, so the case is full of handmade pastries and pan dulce alongside savory food.

The tamales come in red, green, and cheese, which makes it easy to build a mixed dozen for a crowd with different tastes. Plenty of regulars come in for the tamales alone.

If you want more than tamales, the menu also covers pork quesadillas with green sauce, a turkey, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich, churros, flan, and fresh coffee. I like this stop for a holiday morning run, since you can grab sweet bread for breakfast and tamales for dinner in one trip.

Parking is free in the lot and on the street. Weekend mornings tend to be the busiest, so a weekday afternoon visit is usually calmer.

Prices typically land around $10 to $20 per person.

2. Tex-Mex Tortilla, Toledo, OH

Plan ahead for this one. Tex-Mex Tortilla is closed Monday through Wednesday, open 9 AM to 4 PM Thursday through Saturday, and open 9 AM to 2 PM on Sunday.

That short schedule is part of the charm. This small Mexican grocery on Broadway Street in Toledo focuses on two things it makes in-house: fresh tortillas and tamales.

The pork tamales are the standout. They are steamed with a good balance of masa and filling, so neither part overwhelms the other.

Since the shop does not offer delivery, you will need to stop in yourself. It is a quick visit, though, and grabbing a stack of fresh tortillas with your tamales makes the trip twice as useful for holiday meals.

My tip is to go on a Thursday or Friday before a big weekend gathering, rather than waiting for a Sunday morning rush.

3. La Mexicana, Painesville, OH

A full holiday shopping list and a dozen tamales can both get checked off at one address in downtown Painesville.

La Mexicana on East Washington Street is a Mexican grocery store with a deli and butcher counter, a bakery section, and strong produce. Homemade tamales are sold right in the store.

The butcher counter also carries fresh chorizo, and the store sells fresh chicharrones. Next door, a small taqueria serves tacos and burritos if you get hungry while shopping.

Hours run 9 AM to 9 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 8 PM on weekends. Afternoons and early evenings are typically the busiest, so a morning stop is smoother.

This is the kind of place I would visit when hosting a big Lake County gathering. Pick up tamales, grab chorizo for breakfast the next day, and fill the cart with produce in one easy trip.

4. Tortilleria Garcia – Springdale, Cincinnati, OH

Corn tortillas are made on-site at Tortilleria Garcia, which tells you a lot about how seriously this Springdale spot takes its masa.

Located on Springfield Pike in the Cincinnati area, it is a counter-service restaurant known for Mexican classics like tacos, tamales, and rotisserie chicken. Chicken tamales are a popular pick, and individual tamales have been priced around $3.50 each.

The rest of the menu adds shrimp tacos, pork tacos, tacos al pastor, burritos, and the lengua taco. There are also vegetarian and vegan options, plus a kids’ menu and high chairs.

Hours are 10:30 AM to 8 PM every day. Reservations are not taken, but parking is usually plentiful.

Tortilleria Garcia also offers catering, which is handy if your holiday headcount is bigger than a dozen tamales can cover. Tuesdays tend to be the busiest day, while Sundays are often quieter.

5. La Poblanita Mexican Market, Dayton, OH

Tacos al pastor get much of the attention at La Poblanita, but the handmade pork tamales deserve a spot on your holiday plans too.

This independent market on North Springboro Pike near Dayton combines a grocery store and a restaurant. Shelves carry fresh groceries and strong produce, with fair prices and a wide selection.

The fresh pork tamales make an easy dinner, which is helpful during a hectic December week. Pairing a dozen with a few al pastor tacos covers both tonight and tomorrow.

Hours are 9 AM to 9 PM every day. Weekday mornings are typically the quietest, while weekend afternoons and Friday evenings get busy.

Free parking is available in the lot and on the street. I would save this stop for a Saturday errand run if you do not mind a little company, or a Tuesday morning if you do.

6. Carnitas and Tacos – Akron, Akron, OH

Carnitas sold by the pound might be the headline here, yet the homemade tamales make this Akron shop a strong holiday stop.

Carnitas and Tacos sits on South Canton Road in east Akron. It is known for birria tacos and carnitas, and it sells plenty to take home, including tamales, tortillas, pickled carrots and jalapeños, chips, green and red salsas, and Mexican snacks.

Pork and chicken tamales are both on offer. When pork runs low, chicken makes a fine backup, so calling ahead for a large holiday order is a smart move.

The shop is clean and casual, with attentive counter service. Curbside pickup, delivery, dine-in, and outdoor seating are all available.

Hours are 9 AM to 8 PM daily, and parking is usually easy. Saturday afternoons and Friday evenings are the busy windows.

7. La Plaza Taqueria, Cleveland, OH

Here is a two-for-one Cleveland stop: a taqueria on one side and a supermarket right next door.

La Plaza Taqueria on Lakewood Heights Boulevard serves street tacos, large carne asada burritos, and chicken tamales. Premade tamales and salsa are available to go, so you can grab dinner without waiting for a cooked order.

A salsa bar lets you add toppings if you eat in. The menu also includes coffee, sandwiches, and vegetarian options.

Hours are 10 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday and 10 AM to 8 PM on Sunday. Sunday afternoons draw the biggest crowds, while weekdays are calmer.

Parking is free and usually easy to find. Catering is offered too, which makes La Plaza a practical choice for a West Side holiday party.

Expect to spend around $10 to $20 per person.

Wherever you live in Ohio, one of these seven shops is probably closer than you think. Order early, buy an extra dozen, and let the tamales kick off the season.
